Netflix, Redbox and More: What You Need to Know

We let Netflix go a few years ago. We've been doing the Redbox thing when we want a movie. I signed up to be a beta tester for Redbox but so far I don't have a log in.

watch more on demand stuff with netflix than I do their dvd's anymore.

been hooked on the ESPN 30 for 30 episodes (all season 1 is on demand)...some of these are fantastic.

What's really neat with Netflix is how easy it is with new TV and PC to hook up via HDMI and watch streaming video.

Netflix is our go-to for streaming. We dropped the DVD's and haven't missed them as near as I can tell.

Just signed up for a free month of DVD's from Netflix -

Watched our first DVD this past Friday - The Young Philadelphians (1959) with a young Paul Newman and Barbara Rush. It was Paul Newman's mom's favorite film of his.

Supposed to receive the 1929 German Silent Film Classic "Pandora's Box" on Wednesday with Louise Brooks as Lulu.
Looking forward to seeing it.

I've had NetFlix for several years now. I bought the ROKU for streaming, but it is now built into my new Samsung BDV player, and also the Wii game box, so I can stream to almost every TV in the house. I keep the 1 BluRay DVD per month plan, because I invested in HDTVs and surround sound systems, so I enjoy watching the BluRay disks. I also use the NetFlix app on my iPhone to stream video to the TVs at the resorts I visit, using their Wifi network. I bought the A/V cable set from Apple to connect the iPhone to the RCA jacks on the TV. This is very nice when the TV selection is not so good at the resort where you are staying, and there is no extra charge for this, other than buying the cables. I can also stream Hulu Plus and DISH TV thru my iPhone the same way. The DISH app allows me to see all the programming I would normally get at home, plus anything recorded on the DVR, by routing thru the slingbox attached to my satellite receiver. I just have to keep the Wifi network turned on in my house when I go away (DSL modem + router).

By the way, is this one of those "Drive-By" posts I read about?

We stopped our DVD subscription with Netflix a while ago (just don't have time to get good use out of it), but the kids get great use of the streaming. We do use Redbox once in a while, too.

Haven't had Cable or Satellite for almost 10 years now. Haven't missed them.

We use Amazon Prime. I used to be a Netflix subscriber, I plan to renew this too in time for the new Arrested Development season. I am currently in a two month free trial of Hulu Plus - commercials, commercials, commercials, so I cannot wait to cancel Hulu Plus. Am I the only one who feels that way about Hulu? As long as it is available, I will pay more for service over watching any commercials.

We got Amazon Prime for the free shipping, but their selection of free movies and TV shows is pathetic. When Netflix split the pricing, we dropped the streaming because few recent titles were available. We kept the DVD because just about every title is available.

We have Amazon Prime. They have Rango and Transformers Dark of the Moon for free. I was happy with that. Most other new movies we get through Blockbuster online or Redbox.

Yes, the OP would be a classic example of that.

If this is "drive by", then I am happy we have a drive-by TUGger in MULTIZ321. Provides informative links with little or no editorialization, and then lets the rest of us run with it as we choose.

We have both Netflix streaming and Amazon VOD via Prime. I don't watch any of it. I'm just the financial backing.........

We have Amazon VOD as a part of Amazon Prime, as well, but I'm not sure that we've ever watched anything on it. Anytime we search for something we want to see, it's not one of the free options. If there was a way to browse the ones that are free (and maybe there is), I might find some we want to watch, but I just haven't taken the time.

Yes, there is but it's not intuitive. Click on the actual icon that says Amazon Instant Movies or whatever it is, even though it just looks like just a moniker. If you highlight and click on it, then you can see all of what is free.

I have the HuluPlus app on my iPhone, and intended to activate my trial period like you did while I was at the Westin Lagunamar in Cancun last month. I found out that HULU does not have a license agreement to stream video into foreign countries. When you try, they can see what IP address you are locally connected to, and will post a note on your screen that you can't stream out of the USA. Same thing for DISH and 1 of the others I use. The only one that DID work in Mexico was NetFlix. This is just one of several reasons that I will keep my NetFlix account, since I leave the country a couple times a year on vacation and I like to have this option (especially in foreign countries). It is always nice to have streaming digital TV on the resort's fancy HDTV sets, since they usually only have fuzzy analog cable TV.

Several services filter based on your location. If you want access from a different country you need to spoof your ip address. Several sites available for that purpose can be found via a google search.

I watch Amazon Prime on my iPad using their app. It's a nice app and works well, but I don't think has a search option. They had an exclusive on The West Wing for a few months last year (now its also on Netflix), which was a nice change.

I tried Hulu Plus last year and didn't like it at all.

I watch Netflix often.

Do you think it's appropriate to post this on somebody else's public internet forum?

That is why I still go with the DVD service and streaming. I love classic movies and they are not always available on streaming. Enjoy your movies!

Why not? Do you think the "internet police" will do something?

Kurt

The people who shared MP3s using NAPSTER thought it was funny, too, until the record companies came after them. And that was back in the 56k modem days. You really think the likes of Universal and Fox and the TV networks won't do anything about illegally streaming their video? And whether they do or not, it's not a good idea to put TUG in the position of being a source for how to do things that are illegal. You may think it's funny - I don't think it's right.
