We never checked out Mesquite. I don't know why. We were looking all around the Las Vegas area. I'll be very interested to hear all about it.
I'd recommend checking into things. Mesquite is a nice, very small desert town on the freeway to somewhere else. People drive through all the time on the way to Southern Utah or Las Vegas. If you didn't need gas or lunch, no reason to stop. But once off the freeway, there is a growing retirement community there. A variety of homes, ranging from older, fixer-uppers in the town's older neighborhoods, to newer, typical desert-climate homes in winding-street developments. Golfers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts like it for all the recreational activities around the area. Not a lot is happening, which works well for me. There is a calmness, and a sense of just "being" there that is very appealing. I like Mesquite because it is in the perfect location for how I enjoy spending my time. We'll see how well it works out.
