I got to help with roasting the pig for our WaveCrest Condo Luau. I put in over an hour of turning to help it cook evenly. I learned that this is a more Phillipino style way to roast the pig.

This pig is 70 pounds and is only seasoned in the cavity with salt and pepper and then stuffed with Lemongrass. It was started at 11:30am and will be done at about 4pm.

I had to take Kim to one of her Ukulele sessions so we will miss it coming off the spit but I will have some other pictures and video of the dancers and music we will be having. shaka

That looks like a pretty good roasted pig. I grew up with annual pig roasts and corn roasts. My dad actually built a pig roaster that cooked with charcoal. Then a neighbor borrowed it one year and retrofitted it for propane. It was made with a large steel drum and had an electric motor with a three speed transmission! All made with parts and stuff from wherever my dad found them. He started wrapping the pig in wire mesh as the pig would usually start to fall apart and fall into the fire. I LOVE roasted pig, the fresh picked sweet corn was great too. They still have the pig roast annually (though not during COVID).

We were very low tech today. I found out this was a traditional way. A group gets together and takes turns to Huli the pig. I was talking to Cole who took care of all the prep work. He told me his family prefers this method because it brings everyone together. I took a long shift and turned for over an hour. It did help that Cole brought beer though. :D

We just got back so I'll be posting more pictures and some video tomorrow. shaka

Here's a few pictures from tonight. Kim made her lei for the evening. The video is of me taking my turn to Huli the pig.

A pig roast is all about family, friends, good foods and cold beer.
I forgot the main guest/item the pig. LOL

Yum!

Although when I read the title I thought you had helped to dig the pit, layer it with it and banana leaves, etc. and then were a part of the imu ceremony!

I think everyone who attended the Luau was thinking that too. This method is very common here also with large Phillipino populations on all the islands.

It definitely has a more smokey flavor and of course the skin was to die for. Misaki's grocery here in Kaunakakai sells Lechon like this in it's store a lot.

I'll have more pictures and video of the dancers posted in a little bit. shaka

Here's a few videos. I will have more after I get them uploaded. You will notice the Tahitian dancers, they are from a local Halau here on Molokai and they are going to the largest Tahitian dance contest in California soon. I couldn't believe they could dance that long and not even break a sweat or get winded. It was remarkable.

The other group of young traditional Hawaiian dancers was great because tou can tell they weren't putting on a show. They were showing how they are passing along their Hawaiian traditions to their Keiki. It was awesome to get a glimpse of the pride they are taking in passing these traditions onto the next generation.

The events like this on Molokai just seem more personal than anything we have been to on any of the other islands. We love being a small part of that.

The last set of pictures. We had the Kalaupapa Backyard Band close out the show playing some local songs for a couple hours.

The Kalaupapa Backyard Band brought some CD's to give away at the Luau. They play all over Molokai. If you ever come try to find if they are playing somewhere during your stay.

Here is a video they posted last year when they played in town one day. Enjoy!! shaka

Here's the last of the videos. One more from the Tahitian Halau. The solos were the girls who will be competing in California in the solos part of the competition.

The smaller kids here are from the Halau Hula O'Kilohana. Kilihana is on the east side of Molokai where we live. Kilohana school is only a couple blocks from WaveCrest. It's great watching the different levels in the kids.
