i like walking the beach ka'anapali. north kihei road isn't attractive.

but the restaurant options are more plentiful in kihei especially for local places.

For our trip to Maui next year, we are splitting our time between the areas. Starting with 3 nights at MBV, then moving over to the Kapalua area. Whole different set of beaches, places to eat etc...
It's almost the same as our trip. MBV from April 30 to May 9. Then May 9-23 at westin Kaanapali. Now we get to use our HGVC units with our MVC units.

Figure first week we will want to drive and eat everywhere. Then it will probably slow down for the rest of the time and hang at resort more. Kihei is much easier to get to rest of Maui than from Kaanapali.

If our stays coincide, maybe we can meet up?

We don't arrive at MBV until May 10th, so will just miss you there, but our time in Kapalua will overlap some of your time in Kaanapali, so perhaps we can meet up then. Later in the year we will be at HHV and Ko Olina, so another possibility to meet up.

The newest issue at mbv is parking now. If you’re in building 6, 4 or 2 you all are using the same spots that last year building 6 was using.
I agree the construction is also taking a few of those spots. However, even when the construciton is finished Building 2 will have no parking adjacent to the building. That is one of the reasons we have been talking about having a BUS stop right outside of Building 2 on S. Kihei Rd. going North so that building could be marketted as a car free building instead of a pain in the A-- building. We understand from the General Manager that there are a number of peope stay without a car so that building would be great. We also would like to stay without a car. We would take a cab to and from the airport with our luggage but then go food shopping and to restaurants without needing a car.

That would make sense. Isn’t there a bus stop at s Kihei rd and kaonoulu rd? I thought I saw a bus stop there the other day. We have a car because we don’t want to depend on someone else to get us around and we’re not staying at the resort enough to not have a car. Going for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snorkeling etc. Not enough parking falls inline with the typical Hawaii problem. lol

You are so correct that there is a Bus Stop at S. Kihei Rd and Kaonolulu Rd. going South. However, there is no close stop going North. To use the Bus you need to be able go and come back. The closest one is on the other side of the bridge and the area going to and from the bridge has no sidewalk and is the path is not a nice cleared walkable dirt path.

If you are eating most of your meals out you need a car. We use the kitchen for all of our breakfasts and lunches and some dinners. That is why it is important to be able to go grocery shopping by Bus. The Bus stops right at Safeway. One our our money saving dinner habits when on vacation is to have salads and alcoholic drinks in the timeshare unit and then go out to dinner for just the entree. We don't drink and drive so being able to take the bus makes that possible rather than cabbing or Ubering.

i don't understand the issue. the northbound bus stop is 0.2 miles from MBV and the southbound is 50 feet across the road. you don't consider this close?

mass transit isn't great if you have mobility problems but for the other 90% every increase in stops decreases speed and ultimately utility. In NYC walking several blocks for a subway or bus line is completely normal, every subway line does not stop on every corner.

@Tamaradarann and @letsgobobby - I'm trying to understand as well...but from the googly thing it doesn't look like you can walk 0.2 miles north from the resort without walking on the road. But the googly thing isn't showing me a bridge either...

And not that it particularly matters...but most buses in NYC do stop every block or two (at least in Manhattan). And (at least in midtown Manhattan) you seldom have to walk 0.2 miles to the nearest subway stop (e.g. 14th/18th/23rd/28th/34th/42nd on the IRT).

the northbound bus stop is south of mbv not north and there kihei rd passes over a rivulet. it is not an attractive walk but it is safe.

In NYC it is roughly 20 street (not avenue) blocks to the mile. So 14th to 18th (the shortest distance in the above listing) is 0.2 miles. The others are longer. In fact. i can't think of any shorter distances for the subway, so all are 0.2 miles or longer.

Buses vary, but it is easily possible to have 4 block walks between stops on some lines.

Cheers.

Well yes...the distance between streets in Midtown is approximately 264 feet...but no.

I wrote that, "...in midtown...you seldom have to walk 0.2 miles to the nearest subway stop." If I'm heading down onto the IRT at 7th and 14th, 18th, 23rd, 28th, 34th, or 42nd I have to walk 0 feet. And while the distance between 28th, 34th and 42nd is significant, 34th and 42nd have multiple entrances (for example I can enter at 31st, 32nd, or 33rd as well).

I admit I'm less familiar with the buses, but it feels like there is a stop on every other block (at least on B'way and 5th-8th Aves). And certainly every block on the crosstown routes.

You are totally correct that the Southbound Bus Stop is right across the street so I have no issue there. It is the Northbound Bus stop that needs to be added or moved. It is not necssarily the distance to the Northbound Bus Stop it is the absence of a sidewalk or what I consider a reasonable path. I feel strongly that rules and roads for drivers should be made by people that drive, and rules and walkways for walkers should be made by people who walk. It is a takeoff on the saying "Walk a Mile in my shoes" before you judge.

but where it's currently located is in front of an apartment complex if I'm not mistaken. I'm guessing there are 2-3 orders of magnitude more people per month who take the bus from the apartment complex than from MBV. If we're walking in their shoes, the bus stop location is better where it is.

i do agree the sidewalks there should be upgraded. that would be the best solution. this is a problem for quite a lot of that part of kihei rd. there is a siewalk on one side, then the other, then back on the other side so you have to cross the road, and not always at an intersection. there's also a section with no sidewalk at all and everyone just uses an established path in the grass.

You could be correct that the current Northbound Bus Stop is in front of an apartment complex and a number of people there that use the Bus. I wasn't walking in their shoes. My impression was that most of the people who live in Maui have a car and use it to go everywhere like we did on Long Island unlike we do in Honolulu with its excellent Bus system.

I am an advocate for vacationing without a car if possible. Living without a car is a major 365 day a year endeavor which takes dedication. Vacationing without a car for a week or so is a minor 7 day endeavor which can save a great deal of money for a vacation particularly if you don't have a car and cr insurance where you live and need to buy both collision and liabiltiy insurance when you rent a car. Also, elderly people who want to vacation may not drive or drive comfortably any longer so having the ability to vacation without a car makes the vacation possible. Finally, reducing the traffic and fossile fuel emissions is always a positive goal.

The newest issue at mbv is parking now. If you’re in building 6, 4 or 2 you all are using the same spots that last year building 6 was using.
I was told at check-in earlier this month that I might have to park in the lower lots at the entrance from Kaonoulu St. I did not ever have to use that parking lot in the 6 days I was there. Meanwhile, you can find plenty of chaise parking at the pools - Enjoying this while it lasts.

The owners staying in the far west units of building 8 & 9 are using the parking lot to the west of their units - the using the egress stairs at the same end of the buildings.

The next building to open with be 10 - so I was told. After that, a quick turn-a-round for Building 3. B3 will have it's very own parking lot entrance from S Kihei Rd AND will not connect to the any other lots while construction continues with Bldgs 7, 11, & 12.

Once bldg 1 starts construction, the parking lot will lose those spaces at the lower entrance to the left.
