If you move, the cloice is to be friendly or not.
I have not seen people as hostile unless you are unkind.

There are also local meetup groups like in Waikiki that water jog togther and small tailgate parties aftwards a couple times a week.
There's the Moose, Elks, Rotary, etc. you could be seen having some people over for a BBQ and break the ice.

Then again, I hope the prices come down so I can afford to buy.. Don't move there.... Sell your timeshares... :)

You know, with all my timeshares, I could live in Lagoon Tower studio unit for 4-5 months with my points... :D And that wouldn't even be expensive!

We visit Hawaii once or twice a year, and I am always happy when i am there...
I’ve visited Hawaii at least once a year for (I hesitate to admit) more than 30 years now. My wife went to UH and we have many friends who get to live there year round (lucky bleeps).

Happiest place on earth… (with all apologies to DL).

My wife got her Ph.D. at UH and, while we love visiting, her experience made clear that she would never want to actually live there. Definitely different view of vacationing versus living somewhere.

Cheers.

can you say more?

my family is from Maui and Oahu so going back is going home for us. But we do like our HHV accommodations. Otherwise housing is extremely expensive and the housing stock tends to be old. Taxes are very high and food costs too. Traffic and those dang tourists. But the food... the music... the weather... running along the ocean...

Things happen on Island Time, which means slowly, or not at all. Being in California (far from lacking in problems), we have food, music, generally good weather and running along the ocean. All in an environment where it is possible to get things done and is less isolated. Don't get me wrong, California ain't a complete paradise. As I said, there are definitely issues here. But some of the main concerns about Hawaii are not found here.

But, and let me be clear, this is a personal view and personal decision. I've given a viewpoint here, and not gonna debate it.

Cheers.

We arrived at Maui Bay Villas at about 2:00pm and our room was not ready. We went to the restaurant for some snacks. They were okay. View was great, but sure windy. I remember when HGVC announced the building of this location how people said it was not a good location. Very windy in the afternoon and the beach was not really swimmable. Plus, kind of far from restaurants. I have to 100% agree with all of those comments. I enjoy walking to restaurants when I go on vacation. Getting in the car to go somewhere all the time sucks.

The resort is beautiful and new. Staff was friendly, but still new. Went to the bar and asked about the cups/pins like at Kingsland. Bar Manager told me that they are coming as so many people have asked about them. Was told they are trying to model themselves after Kingsland.

At about 3pm our room was ready. After getting our room keys, we had to talk with the salesperson, I mean concierge to get our discounts. Offered the usual owners update which I did in Orlando in 2023 so I said no. Was offered a 32 minute update with 100K HH points. Really tempted, but passed.

We had booked a 2Bdrm Plus. We were in building 2 which only opened two weeks prior on the ground floor. Building/room smelled new and I believe we were probably the second person to stay in the room. There are three buildings under construction with one opening in August, one in November and one in 2025. After that, they will put out three more buildings for bid and then start construction. I photographed the property map so you can see what is being built/open. NB means not built (4 out of 12 open). Last will be building #1. (don't laugh at my high tech labeling)

Construction noise was there, but did not bother me much. The pools were absolutely dead. I would say there were never more than 30 people at the pool area at any one time. It was really nice, but as the resort grows it will be interesting to see how crowded it gets.

what building would have the least noise: both construction noise and road noise from Kihei rd? We are in a 2 bedroom.

How many days per year did you stay?
I don't recall the exact number of days but we would typically get there at the begining of Week 1 around Janauray 4th and stay till sometime in April.

Where is the construction at MBV right now? Is it farther away from the pools now?

Your 2 Bedroom Plus wasn't as nice as my 2 Bedroom Plus - at first - the odd # rooms face north and the Great Lawn - which for now is a direct view of construction. My plus room was on the south side (even #s) I will go back into my owner's documents for the property - it has the site plans and the "title" of each room. I was an owner of the 2-bedroom PH - there were only 3 of them opened on the 3rd floor of building 6 - on a previous trip and I as an owner was given the "accessible" room - we had 6 people - but only 2 chairs on the balcony. The plain BRs without ocean views are in the back rows buildings 8 and above.

Building 2 is the only building that will not have direct access to the parking lots.

I was there in Sept 2024 - The finishing touches are being added to B4 - Landscaping and interior work - this is the only building that is still under construction that is adjacent to the pool. I was told.... that this building would be opened in late Oct 2024.

That's in line with what i was told late yesterday. I was told by the front desk that building is supposed to be done by the end of this month. I still requested something more in the middle to try and avoid some of that.

The resort has a very small activities/kids club. Grab & go cafe is new with a very limited menu/items. Eventually there will be ice cream to scoop.

So all in all it is a very nice resort, but I am not sure I would return. Due to the location and high points value, I feel there are better options for me.
We are staying there right now and love the resort. However, there are some negatives. We have been to Maui a number of times and don't need to ride around the island to see stuff. We are getting to the age where we don't really want to drive anymore. We live in Honolulu without a car and would like to vacation without a car. There is a bus stop across the street going South however, there is no bus stop going North toward the airport. The closest one is on the other side of the bridge and there is no sidewalk.

Building 2 that you stayed in really has no parking lot. It doesn't now due to construction, but even when construction is done there will be no parking adjacent to building 2. That is a major drawback to being in that buidling. However, if they get the County of Maui to place a bus stop adjacent to the property going North they can offer Building 2 as an easy bus option buidling rather than a car al vacation. Turn the negative to a positive.

 Minor detail HGV didn't bother to put into its dealings with the county BEFORE investing ??$200,000,000?? into the place.
No sidewalk is what I thought I remembered (having run R/T Wailea-Kihei twice) when bobby asked about it being safe to run around there.
"I think HGV built a resort in the only spot between Wailea & Kihei where there was no sidewalk. But I'm sure they put one in if they invested so much in the place."

speaking of getting around without a car, if i go at low tide can i just walk/run the beach southward for a ways or does it run into rocky areas or private property right up to the shoreline? i know all beaches are public access but depending on the terrain it may or may not be usable

This is an HGVC resort so we can use our HGVC points to stay there without needing to join HGV. There are some sidewalks in the area but the area between the resort and the closest Bus Stop going North toward the airport has no sidewalk going across the bridge.

Your comment "The Automobile; ruler of people's lives" is quite true. I always say that when it comes to the placement and functional design for crosswalks, bus stops, sidewalks, and white man crossing signals should not be made by people that drive since they have no clue what it is like to walk around. That is particular true for crosswalks WITHOUT TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES.
A crosswalk without a traffic control devices,(stop sign or traffic light) is dangerous for the walkers. Drivers are trained and accustomed to stopping at STOP SIGNS AND RED TRAFFIC LIGHTS. Since they are accustomed to usually driving thru crosswalks WITHOUT TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES and then all of a sudden a pedestrian is crossing they are not reading to stop. That is an accident ready to happen and and often happens

When there is no traffic control device at a crosswalk we treat it as if there is no crosswalk at all. We look both ways and cross whenever it is clear. You need to protect yourself while not just standing at a crosswalk waiting for a break in the traffic. While you are walking If there is a very good break in the traffic take it.

In looking at Google maps in the terrain view it looks like you would be blocked from running on the beach where the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale foundation sits. I might be wrong and there may be a way to get through there. I've attached the map view I was looking at.

There is a code manual for traffic control devices, apparently Maui chooses not to follow it in every instance, perhaps the area is considered rural and only the resorts provide limited sidewalks.

The manual is put out by the Federal Highway Administration.
A explanation of my points: Are the people that prepared the manual on traffic control devices car people. If they are they then they are propbably not walking a mile in the shoes of walkers and don't understand from the perspective of the walker how it is crossing crosswalks without traffic control devices. Drivers look at crosswalks and walkers as impediments to getting where they are driving. They are trained to stop at stop signs and traffic red lights.

We looked at the walkway to and from the Bus Stop going North near the Maui Bay Villas Resort. The bridge is actually fine to cross. It is the lack of sidewalks and overgrown vegetation for short distances going to and from the bridge that is the problem. We would love they put a bus stop right in front of the resort and as I mentioned before the location of parking for staying in Building #2 is going to be a drawback and guests are going to complain about being assigned there.

Having people that drive make laws, requirements, placement of crosswalks, and traffic control devices for crosswalks makes as much sense as having people who don't driver decide on traffic laws and rules for cars.
