I apologize for poorly written posts. I sometimes am using my Samsung table and speaking the words not typing the words (old fashioned way)
and they are posted on the message board.

I do not always type. I just speak into my samsung tablet,
so pls excuse poorly written texts or misspelled words.

I see - do you know what the voice command is for a return? Or is it just a long pause? There is probably one to undo an unwanted return, as well.

I took a look at Marriott's points chart

I looked at Marriott's points chart (posted on owner's site) and the numbers were a bit surprising. I looked at DS2 - the highest point week and then looked at Waiohai points at the lowest point week. I expected that the highest point week for DS2 would be equal or greater than the lowest point week for Waiohai. But that's not what I saw at all.

DS2: November 23-29 (2012) - highest point week for Gold owners
Studio = 1725 points
1 BR = 2500 pts.
2 BR = 3775

Waiohai: Lowest point weeks: Jan 6-26, Mar 30-Apr 5, Apr 13-May31, Aug 24-Nov 22, Nov 30-Dec 20, 2012. (Note: this changes from year to year).
4225-5025 pts. depending on view

Waiohai apparently only has 2 BR units. So, you can do a deposit first request or a request first using a like-for-like (efficiency) and if any Waiohai's are available, you'll get it.

So what I find interesting in the "weeks" world is how a 1725 point DS2 efficiency can trade for a Waiohai with more than double the points. I'm not doubting that it has been done because 1965 reports that he or she has done it, but it is a bit surprising.

Maybe II weeks relies more on the TDI charts and less on the Marriott-assigned point values. This suggests to me that there might be an advantage in trading weeks and a disadvantage in trading points. The Marriott data tells me that you couldn't do a points trade.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Newbie Questions?

We own a summer week at Shadow Ridge in Palm Desert and have had very good luck with trades. We always lock-off and trade "up" for larger units than what we are giving up. For example, we have traded our one bedroom side for Marriott Newport coast in September on more that one occasion and we just traded our lock-off the other day for a two bedroom in early June back to our home resort. Great deal! We have never traded for Hawaii, but that is such a crap-shoot and totally depends on what time of year you want to go, I don't think you can count on Hawaii with any certainty, I think you will just have to try it once you have ownership.

I would expect DSV II to have excellent trading power in II and I believe it's even a little stronger given it's proximity to a JW Marriott property.

We have stayed at DSV II many times with our kids and absolutely love the resort. They have done some nice remodeling in recent couple of years of the pool area and added a really nice kids activity center with it's own movie theater and everything! DSV is too hot to visit in blue season in my opinion, but it should be a great trader and you should be able to consistenly lock it off every year and get two weeks of vacation for your one week of ownership!

If you can afford the maintenace fees with no problem each year, I think you'd be crazy to pass this up. It's a beautiful resort.

BACKGROUND:

I have a 2-Bdrm Shadow Ridge L/O. This is my first use year. I called Marriott (MGVC) and reserved a 2-Bdrm week for later this year. In II, I see my 2-Bdrm week, the 1-Bdrm L/O week, and the studio L/O week.

QUESTIONS:confused: :

1. Do I need to tell Marriott (MGVC) that I will L/O the 2012 unit/week that I have already reserved, before exchanging the unit/week on II? When I reserve a 2013 week with MGVC, do I need to tell them that I may/will L/O the unit/week? In other words, does MGVC lock-it-off? Do they care? Or am I locking-it-off in II when I do the exchange?

2. I thought you have to do a like-unit exchange (i.e. studio for a studio, 1-Bdrm for a 1-Bdrm or less, or a 2-Bdrm for a 2-Bdrm or less). Then within the last 59 days prior to the check-in date, you can request a larger unit? Specifically, can I use the studio or 1-Bdrm portion of the L/O, 6-months or more out (as others have stated), and exchange the smaller unit for a larger unit (i.e. studio for a 1-Bdrm or a 2-Bdrm, or the 1-Bdrm for a 2-Bdrm)?

Thanks :D ,

I've only done this once, but I first called Marriott to lock off the unit (there is a charge for this) then I was able to deposit each side individually with II.

You can exchange for a larger unit using an ongoing search if the resort that you are trading into only has larger units - for example a resort with dedicated 2 bedroom units can be requested using a studio or 1 bedroom unit. Otherwise, you need to log into II frequently to see what's available using a regular search. If it is listed as available you can snag it with any size unit. I see more in II searches with my 1 bedroom DSVII than with my studio, but of course it changes every day.

You must lock it off with Marriott and get two reservation numbers, one for the 1BR and the other for the studio. If you have already deposited in to II, then you are already too late, you are stuck with the full 2BR deposit.

You can never request a larger unit, within 59 days or out of it. You can however use a 1BR or studio to open a request for a resort that only has 2BR units. You will tell II that you will take a 1BR or studio, but if a trade comes through it will be a 2BR since it is all they have.
