@WinniWoman How are you going to manage 3 wheeled bags between 2 people? I’ve never been on a group trip so maybe I don’t understand how it works. Is someone else handling the bags throughout the trip ?
Yes. The tour handles the luggage. Of course, just to add to the headache, they have weight limits and sizes, # of pieces, etc., also. Lol!

The toiletries and stuff in the to be checked carry on don’t fit in the bigger luggage, other wise with some weight adjustment we could have put them in there and eliminated the checked carryon altogether and just had two bags.

Nothing works out perfectly it seems.

It may not help alleviate your worries, but I, too, travelled on Lufthansa on two different flights last year. No one checked my carry-on for weight or size, although it is a smaller carry-on. I was travelling in business class between Frankfurt and Berlin, so I don't know if that made a difference.

Hi MaryAnn,

I don't know if you have considered taking reversible shirts. If not, do a search on reversible women's clothing.

I travel with one of these types of scales:

That’s a cool one! My neighbor said we could take hers with us but I think if we just keep everything as packed as we go along it should work out.

I don’t plan to buy anything and the smaller to be checked bag has room in it and can take more weight.

We are on 12 days bus tour at TURKEY with two carryons. I say you are overpacked. Our routine starts right after we get to hotel. Shower, change clothes and toss everything except pants to bathroom sink. We wash in a hair shampoo, rinse and use towels to squeeze 90% of moisture from our washed clothes. It dries nicely overnight and we never have to pack anything worn to our luggage except for PJs. We wear same clothes to the dinner and following day. We bring light weight slippers for hotel, but so far in Turkey every hotel had slippers. Two pairs of shoes are a must. As we flew with an organized group direct from Prague to Istanbul, I noticed several large bags being brought with. Mistake. You have to think about narrow streets where bus cannot drive up to hotel entrance. Two backpacks and two carryons are sufficient. Safe travels!

Well tonight hubby and I worked on it some more and were able to eliminate the soft laptop bag we were going to use as a second personal item.

We stuck some more incidental items in the to be checked smaller bag and now I can just use my cross body bag as my personal item and my husband will use the back pack.

It’s a bit heavy but if anything he could always just say it’s carry on.

So- we have now 2 checked bags, one carry on, a smaller back pack and a cross body bag.

Neck pillows will attach to the carry on.

As long as our checked luggage doesn’t get lost- or at least lost for more than a few days-- we should be fine.

I’m having a nice cocktail now because my brain is wiped out. Lol!

After this- short road trips only! 😂

Normally we might be able to do that also, but the weight limits Lufthansa has is the problem with the carryons.

My understanding is we do not have to handle our luggage on the tour. We will have two checked bags - the larger with clothes and the smaller with incidentals and toiletries- and one carryon with 2 outfits each and pjs for me- a back pack with essentials and my cross body bag.

While on the tour being transferred to hotels I think we will be able to stick the back pack and our jackets in the smaller of the checked bags so we don’t have to carry that either. It’s really just for the plane. And we can stick the neck pillows inside the carryon.

We have a flight from hell going to Sicily and by the time we get to the hotel- 2 days later essentially - and that’s if everything goes as scheduled-
- I’m crashing, not worrying about washing clothes in a sink.

The smaller roll carry on has 2 outfits in it for each of us with underwear and socks, deodorant, toothbrushes, a washcloth, extra eyeglasses, and laundry sheets we hope not to have to use. That bag weighs exactly 15 lbs. so just made it.
Good news! The weight limit for a carry on with Lufthansa is actually 8 kg, which is 17.6 lbs, so you actually have an extra ~15% wiggle room. Not sure where you got the 15 lbs limit, but the 8 kg is straight from the Lufthansa web site.

I've done that before. I pack light and SWMBO (wife) travels with extra stuff. So, I pull one with the left arm and one with the right arm. If I had to, I suppose that I could have brought a strap and tied two together in kind of a "daisy chain" configuration.

I'd suggest buying a luggage scale. They're handy and incredibly cheap.

One time we were traveling between Maui and Kauai and we ran into a problem with the weight of our luggage.

I had a checked bag and a roll-around. Same for my wife (plus a C-pap). Unknown to me, the carry on had a 17 (?) pound limit. I had packed some heavier stuff in it to make sure that I wasn't over on the checked bag. But the weight of the carry on and checked bag was STILL less than 17 plus 50. But they made me repack it. Same with my wife. I thought that was kind of stupid. Yes, I know that it may change the center-of-gravity, etc., but they didn't seem to care that my wife was probably 50 pounds overweight from the average. They didn't bother to weigh either of us, but those 2 extra pounds in my carry-on and my 5 pounds under in the checked bag meant that I had to repack things.

We have had to repack twice. Once traveling back from Sydney Australia. Had to redistribute between our 2 checked bags and 2 carryon bags. Also when flying from Fiji to New Zealand.

Jeez- I looked it up. I have to double check it.

Ah ha! I see where I got my numbers from: it’s our tour company that requires 15 lbs for carry ons and 44 for checked bags.

So have to go with the lower weight. Not to mention leaving room/weight in the carry on and the small checked bag for the 2 neck pillows and our colder weather outerwear for when we are transported around on the tour.

Why is everything so complicated? Makes my head spin! Lol!

Thanks!

The carry on only braggarts are like the virtue signalers of modern day society. They mainly do it try to make themselves feel superior. As you say, they really could care less about the other person or what they do.
Just the facts, sir. Not bragging. I post that we mostly travel with carry-ons only due to our 3-week lost luggage experience thanks to the now-defunct airBerlin 8 years ago. And as independent travelers to Europe it's so much easier to schlep them onto trains and to walk from the station to our lodging. By not having to collect bags upon landing, time is significantly saved when going through customs.

Domestically for a nonstop flight we might take a larger bag and check it. Or heading home domestically, even with a connection we frequently check our carry-on just for the convenience of not searching for space in less roomy overheads. If bags are delayed, we have clothes at home.

I can see doing that if you can do laundry and have time and the inclination to spend shopping for extra toiletries and other incidentals.

We’re on a tour. Yeah there’s some free time, but I intend to spend most of it resting.

Are you speaking about yourself? LOL!

I'll never forget me and my parents in Cincy airport returning from DE. Instead of going through Customs, we were assumed to be German and were put in the wrong line. Actually, the same thing happened to me this past summer. I was on Tribal Land in the US and my Navajo friend asked if I was German. I realized later he likely meant the real deal and not just a descendant. My son says it happens to him regularly in Europe. Flight attendant assumes he's German, speaks to him in German. We all get a big laugh.

I do agree with you about packing light and laundry in the room. My same son was taught this at age 12 when he went to Australia with a group of kids. So sure, as long as I'm 2 nights in the same place, I can rinse out whatever I need.

My sis threw out her undies when she walked the Camino de Santiago a few years ago. However, I traveled more recently to Europe with Senior Citizens, and what is the saying? You can't teach an old dog new tricks? Yeah, there was lots of overpacking, belly-aching, and I can't recall, even at the time, who wore what. Of course, we wore the same jacket throughout the trip whenever we needed.
i have to ask, why do they think you are German?

first time we flew back from Florida to Wisconsin I tried three wheeled bags and i fell right over the top of one of the two bags I was wheeling I don't know why we had so much, but I learned to put everything in a carry on. I don't have very many clothes in Wisconsin, I do wear the same thing over and over. and I found a winter coat at a neighbors garage sale for $4 this year. I actually wore it four days this fall.

Next thing: my smaller to be checked bag does not have a TSA lock on it. Do I have to leave it unlocked? I have a combination lock, but not TSA approved.
Ugh.

I mean what is the point of locking it if there’s a master key they can use to unlock it? I don’t get it.

Do not lock.
Anything that is super important to you is something you carry-on and doesn't leave your possession.

Also, can I lock my carryon- which has a tsa lock- while it goes through TSA screening? I intend to put our passports and money belts with money and credit cards, etc. cell phone in there during the screening. Not sure how to handle it.

I hate all this stuff.
