This is making me crazy!
Hearing they weigh carryons. 15 lb restrictions. Well, we could consolidate 2 carryons into one and that would be 30 lbs. The measurements for both carryons are compliant. One carryon looks bigger than the other because it only has 2 wheels. It has a lot more space inside than the other 4 wheel carryon. And that’s not even with expanding it! I traveled all over domestically with it and it held clothes for 8-10 days! But I never weighed it when I traveled.

Anyway, now it’s half empty! We were only able to put one outfit each in each carryon, my pjs, underwear and socks, and some incidentals/ toiletries due to the weight limits.

Because the carryons can’t weigh more than 15 lbs, we have to take 2 carryons which will actually take up more room in the overhead bin than if we took one! Makes no sense to me!

So now we have to lug two of them around in the Munich airport while we wait 6 hours for our connecting flight. Plus our two personal items, which I hear they are strict about also. Had to ditch one very small backpack because when stuff was put in it the bottom was larger than 4 inches. I am ending up using a soft laptop bag instead for stuff which is a pain to carry because you have to hold it as opposed to wearing on your back. We do have another small back pack we are also taking that thankfully seems to meet the restrictions.

We will have one checked bag. Neighbor leant us a hard case one but it seems a bit flimsy. It’s packed to the hilt and weighs 42 lbs. so we are under the 50 lb limit. Feels so heavy. Thank goodness it has wheels.

The smaller carryon is a borrow from the same neighbor. I have a call in to her to see if we could borrow another she has that is the same and swap out our spacious carryon for it since it looks smaller and has the 4,wheels. I don’t want our carryons to be checked in case they lose our checked bag. But we’d need the clothes in both carryons if that were to happen.

I’m also going to borrow a luggage scale from another neighbor to double check all this.

I really hate all this.😩

On your journey, is it possible to do laundry? It might save you some trouble. When I used to travel to Europe, I did laundry, sometimes twice. I packed a lot less because of it.

It’s really going to be tough because we are on a tour and also will be in hotels. I’m bringing laundry sheets in case we want to rinse something out but doubt we’ll use them.

Reason #113 I don't check bags on vacation.

I go as far as to bring clothes that while functional and tidy, are nearing the end of their useful life. On the final day, I throw everything out except the clothes on my back.
We rarely ever check bags either but we never go on 16 day tours and in an iffy shoulder season weather wise.

In fact- I made my husband go out and buy two pairs of pants today because he only was bringing one pair and several pairs of shorts.

We are not fashionistas, but we want to look presentable since we will be with a small group of folks.we will wear stuff 2-3 times each. Brought 8-10 outfits.im
Expecting we will be tired a lot since jet lag - horribly long flight to get there- a lot if walking involved, change of schedule, etc.

Last year we were pretty tired from our South Dakota tour and this is longer and more walking.

Anyway, like I said- can’t do a carryon anyway if you only can put two outfits in it per the restrictions! Not for 16 days! And we’ve got stuff packed in our personal items as well (meds and incidentals, etc) because they would have made the carryons too heavy!

I have a warm weather bag and a cold weather bag, ready to go. Clothes on my back, another pair of pants, a couple shirts, and I stuff some undergarments in.

Done. I can go literally anywhere for any length of time with a small pack. Since I'm not accepting a Nobel Prize anytime soon, I won't need to pack a tuxedo. (I wouldn't wear one, anyway.)

This is a big reason why many of the cruises have gotten rid of formal nights.

I’m way too needy for that. I’m a moody dresser also. Our toiletries are big- I need several types of eye drops, disposable heated eye masks, sunblock, creams/ lotions, insect wipes, wet ones, bathroom wipes, over the counter meds and first aid stuff.prescription meds. My husband needs his hearing aid charger case. Razors. Nail file. Toothpaste. Toothbrushes. Mouthwash. Powder. Extra pair of glasses. Feminine hygiene products. Cotton balks and a tips.

Day bag and money belts. I’m bringing a collapsible cane in case my back rebels. A few magazines to read.

Hats, light sweater for churches, will be wearing heavier outerwear to the airport since it’s cold here in NH. Small Umbrellas since next week is predicted to rain most days. And portable ponchos. Ugh. I’m only taking one pair of sandals and wearing sneakers every day. Taking a washcloth. Plug adapters and chargers for our phones.

I am taking 2 pairs of Pjs, a small and slippers. I refuse to walk in socks in hotel rooms.

It’s a lot! And I’m sure I forgot to list other stuff.

On a plus note: I’m not taking makeup and only wearing my cross and post earrings. No rings or bracelets. And we’ll use the soap and shampoo provided by the hotels.

You can’t out all this in a carryon for 16 days.

Yeah. No way would we dress up like that for anything anyway. We don’t own any formal wear.

Mary Ann, you are WAAAY overpacking! Take 3 mix & match outfits. 2 pairs of shoes. Nobody will ask you, "didn't you wear that shirt yesterday'? Pare down your toiletries to necessities- Take NOTHING for 'just in case'. Nobody in your group cares one iota what you wear- and the locals---- you'll never see them again.

Take stuff you can rinse out in the sink & hang in the shower. roll 'em in the towels & they'll dry enough to wear the next day.

Have fun and don't obsess over details.

Half as many outfits and you will be fine. Wear the caps instead of umbrellas. Have fun.

I don’t see how rinsing out pants and other things can dry overnight and be ready to put in a suitcase again. Plus with the schedule we have the first few days we are in the same place and won’t need things rinsed out yet. Then we are going on to more hotels just two days each then another for a few days.

When I packed I used the tours packing guide. They even recommended packing duct tape and string! lol!

You need rain gear. Someone on Facebook said Sorrento was having torrential rains this week when she was there.

When we went to South Dakota last year we packed like 5 outfits for 9 days and towards the end we felt we could have used a couple of more things to wear. The days were long plus sometimes you wanted to freshen up and change into something else for dinner. Casual, but fresher.

People said the bugs were biting in Sicily. I’m bringing stuff like Dramamine because I’m hearing the seas were rough and we are taking two ferries.

What caps? We are taking the small little portable umbrellas. We don’t have rain coats. We prefer not to wear the portable ponchos if we can help it.

For me, the devil is in the details! lol!

Honestly, no way can we take 3 outfits for a 16 day trip. As it is we’ll be in our airport clothes the equivalent of two days before we even start the tour.

Sure if we were staying in the same place and had a washer/ dryer- yes. If the weather was going to be summer there, yes maybe.

I could maybe cut out two outfits each. I don’t see me getting rid of the other stuff. I hate taking the cane and my pelvic belt but I’m really nervous about how my back will hold out

Then we have our neck pillows for the plane I bought. lol! I can’t take my lumbar pillow like I normally would because I can’t fit it anywhere, but I figured I can use the neck pillow alternately for that purpose and also as a knee pillow. Sleeping is tough for me even at home.

Why don’t you each use a checked bag? That way you have plenty of space to pack what you want. Ditch the roller carryons. Then each of you bring a spacious personal item like a backpack. Put an extra change of clothes , meds etc in those.

I agree, you can't. But you don't need all that stuff, either. You can wear the pelvic belt and use the cane on the plane -- so those don't count in luggage calculations. (Just like when I need a heavy coat, I wear it on the plane and then stow it.) You don't need two sets of nightclothes. The magazines can be purchased in the airport if you can't live without reading material. (I sleep on planes, thanks to Benedryl and wine.) The shoes on your feet and a pair of super light shower shoes for footwear. (Reef shoes are ideal for this.)

It is absolutely possible to travel for a full month out of a carry-on backpack which would fit in the personal item bin at any airport gate. I don't travel any other way. And because of this ultra-light style of travel, I don't worry about baggage fees, loss or restrictions. If I can run from gate to gate in time, I'll make my connection. This makes so many things easier -- particularly not having to lug "a steamer-trunk full of stuff" over cobblestone streets.

This is the reason I think travel is easy where so many people think it's difficult. There's really nothing to it. Grab a bag and go. If I need something while there, I'll just buy it. In decades of travel, I have purchased a warm hat in Scotland (ears were getting frostbite) and a sweatshirt in Italy. I pack for what I can generally expect weather-wise, and then hope for the best. So far, no issues.

I would rather travel with just the clothes I'm wearing, a neck pouch and a toothbrush than check bags.

When we travel, we bring packable rain jackets. We have used ours over many years - they were originally purchased through lands end. We also take packable down jackets when we are traveling to cooler climates. They take up very little space, are light and really do come in handy. They all fold up neatly into the jacket pocket.

You can google packable jackets, there are many options.

Many of us tend to overpack just in case we need it. Over the years I learned to just take lightweight clothing wearing an accessory to make them look different, More tops, than bottoms and one outfit just in case the weather is different than expected.

I would think by now through all your threads and posts about this trip that you would realize that the Coffee King doesn't care about your needs, wishes, or limitations. You are clearly a sweet person with a lot of anxiety, so no need to add to it responding to his posts. He simply wants to bloviate about how what HE would do is the best way, and you should follow suit and be like him. He doesn't care at all about you, or what you want to do, or your preferences.

Oh, I see you wrote you were taking hats, not caps. What kind of hats? Do they have a brim? I wear a baseball cap in the rain. A downpour might be a different story, though.

The carry on only braggarts are like the virtue signalers of modern day society. They mainly do it try to make themselves feel superior. As you say, they really could care less about the other person or what they do.

TBH I don't understand people wearing clothes more than a day at a time without washing between. They smell after a day, it's very icky to me. I don't care about looking fancy, but I don't want to stink. One thing that has really helped me with checking bags is doing direct flights, and scheduling the trips so that works. No lost bags yet - harder for them to lose them when it's on one plane and off the plane. Granted, the difficulties of tours schedules for doing laundry if you have to, or having to haul luggage even further is one of many reasons I've never felt a tour was worth it to me. You can't take a rideshare or taxi from the airport to the tour location? The tour doesn't manage luggage during it?

Today’s WSJ has a big article about the airlines and gate checking of carry-ons. People being forced to gate check bags even when there is overhead space. Ridiculous.

BTW I just traveled to Denver and was glad an AirTag was in checked bag. Bag didn’t show up at baggage claim. AA (agent & app) kept insisting bag was somewhere where it wasn’t. AirTag located bag very fast.
