I will be making reservations for the first time for our ShadowRidge unit which is a lockout.

I want to lockout for 2010. Can I do this on-line or do I have to call Marriott? I've been on the website in the "make reservations" area and it looks like I have three choices: Full Villa, Master Suite, and Deluxe Guest Suite. If I just pick the Master Suite to book at this time, will it prompt me for the lockoff payment? At the same time, or later time do I then make a reservation for the Deluxe Guest Suite? I want to book the best weeks (in this case March), so want to be prepared.

What you describe is how you go about locking off when booking online.

So it CAN be done online. Do you pay the $75 lockoff fee when you book the first portion? Or is it just better to do this over the phone?

I booked mine over the phone and they wanted the $75 before making the reservation. I imagine when you make your choice on-line, it will give you the opportunity to pay the fee during the process.

Fee at time of booking

When you go online to book, you have the option to pick full suite or lock-off.
When you make your first reservation, it prompts you to pay then.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

If you happen to be able to book the best week, you can just book the whole unit for that week. Later you can then lock it off if you want. You will then have the 2 sides for that same "best week."

Just remember if you do that, it costs you not only the $75 when you lock it off, but also $29 for the change in reservation. Not a bad sum to pay if you are unsure of your plans, but an unnecessary extra expense if you have definite plans.

Cheers!

Thanks for the info about the extra $29 fee. Boy, there's a fee for everything!

I don't believe you pay the $29 fee if you keep the same dates for both sides of the lock off. If you lock off and need to change one of the sides to a different date then you will pay the $29 fee.

So if you just call back to lock off and keep all dates the same just so you can deposit one or both of the sides, then the $29 fee doesn't apply. Only the $75 applies.

Had not thought of it in that way. Nice catch! :whoopie:

Don't they need to assign a separate reservation # to the lockoff? Maybe they will charge for that if you lock it off afterwards.

???

this may be a dumb question but... what is locking-out/ a lock off?

thanks,
Aaron

Many 2 and 3BR units (and the 1BR in Kaui) are considered lock-off units. The master portion (1BR in the 2BR and the 2BR of the 3BR) and the studio side of the unit have separate entryways, as well as being connected by an internal doorway. If the owner opts to, he/she can request the unit be locked off, so that only one part of the unit is used for a given trip.

This gives a lot more versatility- if you only need a 1BR or studio to travel in, you can book 2 weeks back to back, can book weeks at your home resort at different times of the year, or exchange one or both of your "halves" for another location in II.

When I had to cancel last minute last year I locked off before depositing and was only charged the $75 fee for doing so.

I've seen other people say the same thing. When I asked a VA the question, she said I would be charged both fees. Who to believe?

Consistency would be nice! :)

I'm not taking any chances. I'm going to lock off when I make the reservation to begin with.

Good use of Lock-Offs

We own a 2 BR lockout unit at Shadowridge also. I make my reservation for the next stay 365 days in advance since we know when we will use it ( always at Thanksgiving) We take the full 2 BR unit and later in the year I call owners service and lock out the efficiency side for the $75 fee.
We then decode where we want to trade the lock off side usually searching for Marriott's with no lock offs so you can get a t least a 1 BR.
This year we had the 2007 and 2008 lockoffs deposited in II and just decided to try for Palm Desert in the next few weels. To my surprise I found a 2BR trade at Desert Springs II for 1/18/09 and took it. Then I looked at the next week 1/25/09 and lo and behold there was another 2 BR so I booked it. So now we have 2 weeks in a 2 BR at Desert Springs II in prime season in exchange for 2 efficiency lock offs.
Last minute exchanges are great if you are flexible.

Great trade! If we ever deposit, last minute trades are what we would do. It's good to know there are some benefits!

So the question is, did they make you pay the $29 change fee when you locked-off at a later date?

I locked off later, simply because I was a new owner and didn't know what I was doing, and did not have to pay the $29 fee.

I deposited about 5 months after making the reservation in both cases and was not charged the $29 fee. Paid the &99 II exchange fee for each week.

Thanks for everyone's experiences. I now think I'm going to wait to lock it off in case I decide I want to use the entire 2 bedroom.

Pumbug, great exchanges with your studio portion. Hope I'll be able to do the same sometime.

So much for the VA who told me I would pay the change fee along with the lock-off fee! Is there somewhere on the Marriott site that answers this particular question? I've seen other posts where some paid it and others didn't in this situation. It would be nice to know what to expect.

I booked the entire villa. When I called to lock off I had to pay the $75 fee and they waived the $29 change fee. So they can charge you the $29 if they want! Once I had made the reservation online it would not let me lock off later without calling II to do it.

There is no change fee. Period. I am not Dave M., but I can tell you UNLESS you change your dates, there is no change at all, just a lock-off.
