Life Change: I Retired!

After you retire the days just fly by. Maybe it's because we are enjoying it so much or maybe it's because we are getting (gulp) older.

I believe it! That is how my weekends are!

When I was working weekends flew by because that's when everything I couldn't get done during the work week had to get done. It was rare that I really "enjoyed" a weekend.

That's me. I get a lot of anxiety and I end up starting the week exhausted.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts.

I am a high energy person, so DW shared with me that I need to keep busy. We love spending time together, but we are used to doing our own thing during the day, some times even on vacation (i.e. Me with golf and her with reading for instance). We know this first year will be an interesting experiment, both financially and time wise.

I started my volunteer role as a course advisor (aka Marshall) yesterday and really enjoyed it, which I thought I would. Enjoyed interacting with people and driving around a beautiful part of Las Vegas.

Any part time work I do will be something I enjoy and will help supplement our retirement income at. Least until we fully make the transition. I can already appreciate how experienced retirees make it work on a fixed income, especially in the current economic environment.

We are looking forward to everything that lays ahead.

Mike

My main goal is to improve my golf game. I felt like I have not had a weekend for the past 20 years where I did not work, and definitely in the last 8 years. Every trip was a work vacation as well. I am still getting used to not working for a living and not staying awake at night thinking about solutions to work problems or thinking about potential problems related to work. I am starting to sleep better. Yesterday was the first time I played 18 holes without interruptions and the need to check email/voicemail.

Your golf marshall thing sounds like fun but it also sounds like work commitment. For the next few months, I do not want any work or volunteer commitments. I need to get used to the new life before committing my time to anything that does not sound like just pure fun. ;)

.... I struggle just to get my one and only sibling to visit or to invite us. ...

My best method to keep my siblings (all 4 of them plus spouses) is GUILT, BRIBES and THREATS. Every 5 years, I host "My Birthday Party Week" at a timeshare resort. Beachfront in Florida and Kauai with ocean view in the past...have to start planning/booking the next trip. It is like a POP-UP trip ... I email the location a month/6 weeks in advance ... my birthday does NOT FLOAT.

Otherwise, they ONLY show up for funerals (other relatives), their class reunions (and not seen unless they are looking for food or bed), and using a free roof as they drive thru.

Second month - retired

So far, so good! I just received my second retirement check!! Yep, they are actually paying me to do NOTHING now!! But actually, I agree, I don't know how I got all this stuff done while still teaching!! I must have just been crazy busy!

I taught for 31 years and just retired at age 51. My bring home pay is 6/7 of what I was making while teaching. I'll take it!

DH can retire next June, but may go a little longer for some nice financial benefits. However, seeing me retired, may put that to a stop. :whoopie:

I was a little scared of retirement, losing my identity as a teacher, etc. but I am doing some consulting work for districts and enjoying every minute of that!

Enjoy!

Yes. I have read your posts about that. Great idea, but won't work in my case.

Sigh...

Happy 2nd anniversary to me. It's been 8 years since the day I retired.

Congratulations Mike!!! Happy Retirement - Enjoy!!!
