We just stayed at KL and wanted to come back to provide some thoughts and updates:
Groceries:
We went to Walmart right from the airport (6 days not really enough for CostCo). They are good for staples like milk, eggs and the like. But fresh is minimal to non-existent. We supplemented this with a visit to the KTA superstore in Waikoloa. Very nice selection of vegetables, fish and meat. Even though we got there after the butcher are was closed, the pre-packaged stuff was quite nice. And some really good Portuguese sausage for breakfast. They are more expensive than Walmart for staples, but they have so much more.
We've not been to the Foodland, but reviews I saw said that they had less selection and higher prices than KTA.
Last year we arrived on Thanksgiving and went to Safeway as Walmart was closed. This did seem a bit better than Walmart.
Gas:
There has been talk of a Texaco very close to the airport. It is there, but was not quite open (construction fencing). The next turn after the airport, so quite a bit closer than the Hele on Kanalani that we went to. Looks like it will be a very good option.
Resorts:
KL: They have a very nice coffee gathering for owners on Tuesday morning. Not a sales pitch, but good info about the island and resort update details. GM of KL/Bay Club/Kohala was there. And they gave one of the discount drink mugs just for being there. Well worth the time.
The morning yoga class was really nice and very well-attended.
HWV:
The pools are up and running. On a Thursday morning there were about 6 people in the whole pool area. Off-season is nice.
Cheers.
