Is it worth rescuing 600 points?

I can't use them until 2010.
I think it would cost 59 dollars or so, right?

The cost is $69 to rescue those points.

To me, it sounds marginal. If, for example, you have 5000 points with a MF of $800/yr, that MF is 16 cents/pt. The 600 points have cost you $96 in MFs. It will cost you $69 to keep them. So, on the face of it, it's worth it. But would you definitely use them, or might they go unused again?

I've given up 200 points rather than rescue them. I'm not sure about 600, but I think I'd probably give them up too. But that's just me.

I would just tack another day on the end of my vacation so I didn't have to check out at 10:00 AM and sit without a room for the rest of the day rather than just lose them.
My flights usually end up leaving in the evening.

Are you rescuing 2008 which I am assuming is what you are asking. You MUST use those in 2009. If you are rescuing 2009 why are you doing that already now.

If they are 2008, can't you just deposit them into RCI and then combine them with more points in a future year when you make a booking. As far as I am aware there is no cost to deposit points in RCI. There is a cost to search/book the unit but not to deposit. You will have 2 years to use those in RCI.

A student of "theoretical lexicography" could write a graduate dissertation on the definitions and connotations of HGVC terminology and only scratch the surface.

As I understand it, rescuing saves 2008 points for use only in 2009. So... What I suspect the OP is talking about is depositing 2009 points for use in 2010. In that case the points are usuable for any purpose in 2009 (via borrow-back) and 2010.

I would pay $69 (an accountant's inside joke?) to save 600 points if I could use them to enhance a vacation with an extra day (one day for $69 is a no-brainer) or to upgrade to a bigger unit.

I don't think I can deposit them.
I had 5000 points. I borrowed points for my 2009 vacation to Hawaii. But for some reason, I have 600 points that are going to waste. Wait - sounds weird, doesn't it? Why did I have to borrow? I'm confused.

I copied this from the website:

You have 5000 annual points. In 2008 you booked something for 4400 points. So for your 2008 use year you have 600 remaining.

In 2009 you booked something for 6200 points, so used all your 2009 and you borrowed 1200 from 2010.

In 2010 you have only borrowed 1200 points so you have 3800 remaining.

When did you purchase these points? You bought them on the resale market right. It could be that these are the previous owners usage remaining.

Is that possible?

I did buy it resale. I have no idea what I had when purchased. DUH ME!
Our flight from Oahu to Kauai leaves at 11 am, so we'll check out early anyway so that doesn't help... but it was a great idea!

How to Swap Regular Points for Rescued Points

For me, when I rent out my units I usually price them at .25 to .35 of the points value. So, 600 points to me would be worth about $150 to $200. They only have value though if they can be used by someone. Here is a way you can personally get use of them for your already existing reservation and recoup some of your 2010 points. (Basically you will be swapping 2008 rescued points for 2010 points).

1. Rescue the points.
2. At a very slow time on the HGVC reservation system, reduce your current 2009 reservation by one day for a day that has a value of more than 600 points. This will give you back some of the 2010 points you borrowed.
3. Immediately reserve again the extra day (before someone takes it) and the system will now use your rescued points first... yes, before it uses the 2010 points.
4. Now you have personally USED the value of the rescued points for your 2009 reservation (making the rescue fee worthwhile) and RECAPTURED some of you 2010 points.

I hope this makes sense. I have done this multiple times. But, there is a risk you could forfeit that one day of your current reservation during the minute that passes between transactions. So far, it has not happened to me and I've done it several times.

...3. Immediately reserve again the extra day (before someone takes it) and the system will now use your rescued points first... yes, before it uses the 2010 points...

Hold on there, hoss...
You can't make a reservation for just one-day, can you? So, don't you have to:
1. Rescue the 2008 points;
2. Cancel the 2009 reservation altogether;
3. Re-make the reservation, thus using rescued points B4 the 2010 points?

IMHO, even with this hassle, the extra day ultimately saved for 2010 is worth $69.00;
however, it may not be worth the time it takes to futz with this.

Hang on. The first cost in the is $69 to rescue the points. The second cost, unless you are elite, is $69 to change the first reservation, then ANOTHER $69 to change it again. Too much money in my book.
I'd call them and ask if there was anything they can do with changing the reservation to use this years points, for 1 $69 charge. What do you have to lose?

So I probably should have rescued them before making the reservation awhile ago.
How many points is one day at a resort (I realize 3 is required). I think about 1000 at Lagoon one bedroom during the summer. So had I done that, I would have gotten half a day...

Too scared to do the change - if I lose the night it would be a disaster (sleep on the road in Hawaii with the kids?)

What I will do is call. THANKS! I'll let you know what I find out.

You can change a reservation made online unlimited times for free.

A reservation must be at least three days. But you can drop and add days to any reservation without cancelling it and remaking it.

Ahh! I think I get it... Rescue the points, and then either:
(A) do an online change to add a day (using up the points); or
(B) reduce a day (to release 2010 points), then add back (using the 2008 points).
... however many points the add-back costs, you'll be borrowing 600 less from 2010.
... and yeah, doing the changes online saves the change-fee.

How about converting to Hilton Honors (a little birdie gave me that idea)? I love getting away for the weekend.

I see two issues...
1. You cannot convert 2008 points to HHonors. "On or before December 31 of the current year, members may convert any or all of the following year's ClubPoints into Hilton HHonors points." 2008 Guide, p.170.
600 * 25 = 15,000 ... about half-a-day at a Level 3 (Hampton?).

The main question now is simple - do I need the 600 added to the remaining 3800? Either I'll have 3800 or 4400 to use 2010.

We travel 2 times - during spring break (4 nights) or during the summer.
Both are peak times, I assume. I would want to use them in Orlando with the kids - 2 bedroom. So the main question is - how many points for a 2 bedroom for 4 nights in a 2 bedroom? Will those 600 be needed?

I know I can go onto the website and find this answer - pondering aloud. I'll check later - got important things to do today! Gotta get my hair done. :)

Love my tug friends!:cheer:

Per night in a 2BR in Platinum season is either 1400 for weekend or 700 for Midweek. So I don't know if you will need it unless you know if you will travel primarily over a weekend or during a week. 4900 points if you used all weekend days plus one midweek, and it would reduce 700 per day you shift out a weekend for a midweek. So 4200 for 2 weekend and 2 midweek. It does sound like 600 points might come in handy if any weekend days are needed. However is you only plan on a midweek stay, then 2800 might be all you need, and the 600 points are not required.

If you discover that you need the points then why not just call HGVC and ask if they can make the adjustment for you.

1) Ask to rescue the points.
2) Ask if they can adjust the existing booking with you having to cancel it and then add it again, to use the rescued points.

They may be able to do it for you over the phone. Try asking, if the answer is NO, then no harm. If the answer is YES, then you will get your rescued points used and but 600 points back into your 2010 use year.

So I called. They put my reservation on a special hold. They took my 69 bucks and then applied my 600 points towards the reservation in Hawaii. They reinstated my reservation - exact same thing - and now I have 600 more points for 2010. THANK YOU ALL. I think that was worth the 69 dollars!! You are THE BEST as always!

If you don't ask the answer is always no. But I couldn't see any reason why they would not help you out. As you were doing something that was within the rules. You just lack the guarantee the you would not lose your room if you tried it yourself.

Glad you called and got it done, so now you have 600 more points to play with in 2010. And those points are basicially just a small bonus you received from the previous point owner.

Congrats for taking the bull by the horns.
The points may ultimately not matter much, but its a nice cushion to have.

Thanks all. Yes, who knows if those 600 will be worth the 69 at one point - but it seemed smart.

Smarter than my recent stupid blunder accidently offering 19,000 for a timeshare on ebay - geez - I mean 1900. Luckily it's not binding. I'm going to forget about more timeshares right now!
