Hi all!
Not sure if this is the right discussion thread for this post, but I was wondering if anyone who has interval would be willing to help getting two guest certificates for my family.

Backstory: We booked a resort in Cancun to go with extended family this summer. We went last year to celebrate our honeymoon and thought it would be great to bring all the family. We even began a trial membership with the resort, and we have until the end of this year to use it. So, we made our reservation directly through the resort and then bought 2 guest certificates for the others.

Interval called yesterday to say our account is flagged and they need to refund the certificates because the resort will only welcome II members once every two years to their resorts based on some agreement. So they have a cap. Our guests can't come until after the 2 years expires on the account.

We have already planned the trip for everyone.

If it is possible for someone to help us get the guest certificates so we don't cancel the trip, that would be great.

Usually you can go and find an owner who is renting out their time at the resort and the owner can have guest certificates for as good a price as you can get via II. Look for the facebook page for the resort, or Redweek or one of the usual accomodation booking platforms. Sometimes dealing direct with the resort also gets you a decent deal.

You can't transfer "Guest certificates" between II members, so your current guest reservations will have to be cancelled. The information on the limitations will have been in the pages, you should read before you confirmed the booking and on the confirmation you got sent, if not appeal to II. What you are asking is for someone to book via exchange or getaway in their account and pay for the reservation for you. The only way that is allowed via II is if they then gift the reservation to you for no cost, exchange or barter, or they risk having their account suspended. Its against IIs terms and conditions to rent out or sell on any of their reservations.

Whatever you do, carefully check whoever you are dealing with as you are setting yourself up to be targeted by scammers. There are decent people out there who will rent their ownership to you for a great price and there are also many people who will fake the information and take your money, leaving you stuck without accomodation.

All the best.

Are you sure you wont need 2 different members each with gift certificates to offer?

They aren't really looking for guest certificates. What they need is someone else to make the reservations for them in their II account. They would need to be willing to turn their credit card over to that person in order for them to be inline with the rules about commercial activity. As long as you make the reservation using the credit card of the guest, then there is no question about money changing hands between guest and owner.

I don't know if I precisely understand your situation but, as I have never used II before, here's what I know about RCI (for whatever this information may be worth to you):

First of all, when you as owner of a timeshare week make a reservation for a week listed on RCI, the week will then be in your name. But you can put it into another's name by purchasing a guest certificate naming THAT person as the new holder of that week (so that THAT person thereby steps into your shoes). The guest would then be the owner of that week in the resort's computer system.

You don't need to name each and every family member in the other person's party. The name of the person checking in will suffice. So if the timeshare sleeps eight, all you need to provide is one person's name.

So I don't know exactly how you ran afoul of the "no more than one time in two years" rule. Because I once made a RCI reservation, named a guest for that year's week, and then tried to make a reservation for myself the next year. As I didn't know if that could be done because of that rule, I called RCI to talk to one of their representatives. And was told that, since I didn't go the prior year, I was OK. My last year's guest, however, could not be named as a guest again this year after having gone the prior year.

I always speculated that the rule was as it was to insure a constant supply of "fresh meat" to listen to their timeshare presentations. Since I myself had not gone the prior year, of course I would be welcomed with open arms.

So you clearly were there within two years. But your guests were not (presumably). So why would you (who did not make your own reservation via II but, instead, directly with the resort) have been flagged since their guest certificates were in their names, not your name? How, from II's perspective, would there have been someone staying twice within the two year period?
