I believe there were reports of the MVC insurance covering MCS cancellations last year, and upon the insurance company's decision to cover, the insurance company contacted MVC and the points were removed from the owners Holding Account.
You are correct, Fasttr. I filed a claim with TravelEx for my Crystal Shores legacy week as well as a week reserved with points last October after my reservations had been canceled by MVC due to Hurricane Ian. I received a check approximately 30 days after filing for the maintenance fees for both weeks. I informed the TravelEx CSR by phone that I was unable to use the holding points that had been returned to my account before the end of the 2022 calendar year. After being reimbursed by TravelEx for the points’ maintenance fees, MVC removed the points from my account.

So, they just canceled my Ko Olina reservations for next week, and returned over 9,000 points to my holding account. This was for our 50th anniversary family trip. On hold now to try to get thus resolved. They did NOT cancel Maui. Anyone know how to get a live person on chat?

That is messed up. To get past "Sunny" the chatbot, just type "agent".

That is encouraging. I hope those who lost their points reservations in Maui are given the option to do the same thing and can get their money back if they won't be able to use the points.

after I cancelled an Abound reservation at MOC for my daughters upcoming honeymoon,I rebooked her into Timber Lodge for 5 nights and Pulse San Diego for 4 nights..they kept the 7 nights at KoOlina…the 750 leftover holding points expire 12/31/2024…and 12/31/2025...not too bad.

Or Advisor..sometimes you may have to type it 2 or 3 times before Sunny “understands”
Using "advisor" is a term that Sunny doesn't understand and you need to type something Sunny doesn't understand at least three times before Sunny asks you if you want to talk to an agent. Typing "Agent" is a term Sunny understand and it prompts Sunny to ask if you want to be transferred directly to an agent. So using "agent" seems to be the best option now.

Are there no third party options available?
If there are,
i have been unable to find them sadly.
I have explored all the major European travel insurance companies and also enquired through the independent Timeshare Association here EUROC https://euroc.org/abouteuroc/ but no luck as yet with the suggestions they were able to offer.

So the best option may be self insurance? For every trip you book, put an extra £150-£250 in an account. This should be close to the equivalent of what a trip protection plan might cost. Then when you have a situation where you need to cancel, you just pull the money from that account. I suspect if most of us did this, we would come out ahead at the end of our traveling lives. That is ultimately how insurance works. Kinda like extended warranties on electronics.

Absence of potential insurance products should not necessarily put MVC or other owners on the hook if an owner has to cancel. I think much of the trip insurance issue outside the USA is a result of different regulatory structures related to insurance in other countries. Same with the credit card offerings for reward cards.

Has anyone had MVC cancel a MOC reservation?….if so,did the points go into a holding account or did the points go back to where they originated from?

I cancelled an October reservation at the Westin Nanea on Maui. We are 1-week/year owners. I was told I had to use my Options by 12/31/23 Or we would lose them. I am today asking Marriott to extend the usage of our options thru 2024, as this wasn’t a cancellation we had any control over. They told me on the phone the resort has cancelled all of August & Sept. reservations and would probably cancel October. Because I cancelled, I am going to lose this year’s options. I’m annoyed. I have little hope they will extend our option usage dates. This was a major disaster, Maui won’t come back for years….

has anyone else been told this? I’m thinking the people who answer the phones don’t all have the same info. I appreciate any input!

Even people where Marriott has cancelled their 2023 reservation inside 60 days are seeing the restrictions. So it doesn't matter that you cancelled it or if Marriott would have.

The good thing about Abound Club Points is that there are a lot of uses for them where you don't have to travel. You can actually convert them straight to airline miles. Not a good use, but they shouldn't go to complete waste.

So using "agent" seems to be the best option now.
The first thing I type is "agent" and it always takes me to the Yes/No button, where I click Yes, and then it tells me what position I am in the queue.

Thanks for this. I converted them to Interval, so I have until 2025 to use those. Not complaining, but I guess I expected a miracle kindness from Marriott, and I know better!

My wife and I have decided we are going to gift my daughter and fiancé 325 holding Points for a $115 resort credit at KoOlina and another 325 holding Points for a resort credit at the Pulse San Diego for their honeymoon next month.

@gln60 I just have to congratulate you for making lemonade out of these lemons- and for your daughters honeymoon no less! Great idea to just get on it and rebook, especially since the dates were set.
Congrats to the happy couple too- I’m sure they will have a great trip.

Yeah, looking to hear more about that, but I suspect someone f---ed up. I hope they can restore the reservation and if they try to say they can't I wold be demanding it go up the chain and they pull their own inventory to reinstate the reservations.

Yeah, it just seemed odd that this was omitted from the discussion.

That stinks that they made this mistake on top of the unavoidable issues. Hopefully they got it squared away for you. Please update us how this works out. It's be great if they got it fixed and you got a points discount in addition.

I think the details were scarce, perhaps @BocaBoy just saw the cancellation online or via email and hadn't spoken with Owner Services yet.

With my daughters wedding less than a month away,I had no time worry about the the Points for Maul going into a holding account…I needed to use those points within 30 days to salvage half of my daughters honeymoon…so talked to my daughter about the MVC properties that were available for her dates and that geographically made sense, flying from EWR airport here in NJ,So we decided on Timber Lodge in Lake Tahoe..and Pulse San Diego...luckily she was able to book a flight on Hawaiian Airlines to Honolulu from San Diego...Thank you,I appreciate your kind words.

REQUEST FOR BASIC GUIDANCE HERE (Updated because I answered myself a bit) - I'm not asking for a reinvention of the wheel, just a pointer to the best threads for this.
I'm at Chairman level (if it matters here - don't think so), have 2 Maui legacy weeks rez cancelled, Marriott says they are being deposited into II, weeks good until 12/31/2024. Two main questions:
Is there any info here yet on being able to simply getting Travelex insurance to reimburse maintenance fees for the weeks? Can it still be done now that MVCI says the weeks will be deposited into II?
Thanks. The density of posts is such that I cannot see the forest for the trees, and before I call Travelex, I'd like to be armed with what I should expect!

And I found the answer to my other original question in the Stickies: The Points System FAQ and Guide, and the Weeks FAQ and Guide are where I'll start, before bothering you guys again with basic questions about II, which I have never used, despite II ownership since 1995. (My husband handled the 3 times we went through II - we own places we want to go!)

This is a tricky one, I don't think Travelex will cover your maintenance fee in this type of situation. It is possible that you could file a claim and Travelex would work with Marriott to possibly have those weeks removed from II. That said, I think you can get more value out of those deposits than your reimbursed maintenance fees. Are your deposits flexchange restricted? If so, that may make getting value harder.

I don't know of any specific threads that go over the 101 of how to make exchanges.

Here’s some quick advice on II- I have been using it for years.

#1 is put in a request as far in advance as possible, a year or more for MVC properties since that’s when owners can deposit, but still request even if it’s less. You can search manually while you request is pending with the same week.
There are video tutorials in the general discussion of the II community to show you how to place a request and make an instant (manual) exchange. The II community is a good place to get advice too- just be specific and clear that you are using a MVC legacy week.

You have priority exchanging into MVC/Abound properties and also discounted exchange fee to those. If you include a non abound property in your request you have to pay the higher (regular) fee.

You can modify your request yourself online but must call to cancel.

Watch your email and check II daily because you have 24 hours to cancel an exchange one it comes though if you don’t want it.

The faq and buyers guide (under legal) are at the bottom on any page on II.

Good luck, come back with more questions if needed.
