We live in Denver and do what others suggested. Fly from the coast, then fly back and spend a night both ways with your free hotel nights. It is often a bargain to fly from San Jose or Oakland for us.

We live very close to SJC and fly to Hawaii exclusively on AS from SJC (and very occasionally OAK). Great flights & airline and, as you say, good pricing.

This is tough to book. Nothing available of 3 nights within the booking window. May get easier as more of the resort opens...or it may not :)

Cheers.

Which airline is AS?

Alaska. That's their IATA symbol.

Cheers.
Thanks. I thought that might be it, but I wasn't sure. For example, many abbreviated Southwest Airlines as SW, but their IATA symbol is WN. :)

Yup. I always call it WN. But people on other boards usually think I'm weird when I do. So I'll sometimes just say "Southwest" to avoid all confusion :)

Cheers.

Our first time in Hawaii - 7 days on Oahu, then 3 days on Maui. And I have to agree. The flight back was terrible. We barely slept. The flight was OGG-DFW flight, and then a 4.5h drive back home. (A week and a half ago a winter storm hit DFW and they canceled a lot of flights, including our SAT-DFW, and rather taking a trip on the next day, we drove to DFW and took it from there) We made it home, with my wife asleep most of the time, and me taking 2 naps on the way.

I'm now planning to do Big Island for Christmas/NYE, this time with kids, and I'm fine with SAT-...-KOA, but the return has to be to California. Maybe 10 days Big Island, then 3 days MarBrisa, or Vegas, whatever has a direct flight from KOA...

If you've been on FlyerTalk enough you get used to the IATA codes. I have a similar issue with our Canadian airline WestJet. The IATA is WS, but most people here abbreviate WJ. I know it shouldn't bug me, but it does.:cool:

Made me think of this scene from Good Morning Vietnam. Always makes me laugh.

What is the construction next to the new Hilton in Kihei? Are they building more on that adjacent property? I hope so.

What is the construction next to the Hilton. The Hilton looks amazing, by the way.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the additional HGVC buildings under construction.

Maui Bay Villas is located on a 27-acre site featuring 740 feet of oceanfront with views of Maalaea Bay. The resort will offer 388 units of one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, averaging 962 square feet, among a dozen one- to four-story buildings that are arranged in a low-density, resort-type campus. Planned amenities include a large clubhouse with restaurant, keiki club, fitness center, grab-and-go market, large “super pool” with pool bar, oceanfront beach club and more than 15 acres of open-lawn recreational space. The resort site is located on Maui’s southwestern coast at 575 South Kihei Road.

Just staying here now as part of a two night bridge between a week at Kings' Land on the Big Island and a week booked at the Westin Nanea. As reported, the resort is (still) in the very early stages. There is still only a single building open, and based on the artists renderings, it's one of the worst located buildings. I don't think a single room here has any sort of a view (other than of the resort grounds). The main Beach Club building looks almost complete, but still none of that section of the resort is open. The "super pool" is fabulous, although a bit unprotected...I would have done some screening/landscaping on the road side to both shield the road noise and the winds that can come up off the water quite strong at times.

The rooms are nicely appointed; I would consider them of about equal quality to the Phase 1/3 at Kings' Land. I find the design a bit "sterile" with very little nod to being in Hawaii. In that sense, I prefer Kings' Land units (which for Phase 1/3 are also slightly larger).

A few minor things I do not like:
  • the master bedroom has a mechanical "blackout" shade you can raise and lower via a control on the wall. Thought this was a great idea the first night we lowered it before we went to bed....a shame that in the morning we discovered it is totally ineffective at "blacking out" anything. Light leakage all around. Really not ideal for Hawaii;
  • there is just a single combo "washer/dryer" unit in the room. I don't love these as in my experience they don't get things properly dry AND having a single unit means you can't have a wash going while a dry is going;
  • the pool towels we were provided with were absolutely appalling. The absolute thinnest/cheapest towels we've ever been provided at a resort. I have no idea why they aren't the same as those at Kings' Land (which are pretty decent).
We were put into an accessible unit, which also meant no bath tub...and now that I type this, I wonder if that's also why we have a single "washer/dryer" combo unit as I recall HGVC doing that given the top of the stackable is not accessible.

Overall a nice short stay, but I would definitely not stay here again until they are nearer complete.

You were booked into an ADA-mobility room. Only these have a combo D/W unit so it's not a reason to complain. Mobility disabled folks cannot operate stand-on-top unit.
