Is anyone in HI this week? How are they preparing for the hurricanes?

I called the front desk at WKORV - they said "business as usual."

Owner Services is offering the option to cancel, but the Staroptions would be restricted to 2014 use, and there is nothing much left to reserve for 2014. Also, Owner Services said that what they are offering is subject to change.

This is a minimal hurricane and looks to only brush Maui with some wind and rain. You have to factor something like this into your travel plans when you are visiting an area at a time when this is a possibility..

We're at the resort. Nothing too exciting to report yet. They've indicated the pool will be closed, limited housekeeping as well as the closure of the outdoor dining venues at the resort. It's actually nice and clear (but windy) right now. The Big Island will take the brunt of the storm this evening and then the eye is expected to pass south of Maui. Julio will also be bringing us rain, but is currently expected to pass north of the islands.

Thanks for the update - please let us know how it goes tonight and tomorrow.

I have a friend who lives on Maui. She's giving constant updates on FB. Looks pretty tame right now.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if I was on Maui right now. I mean, it sucks to have rain and all that, but how cool would it be to see a (mild and non-life threatening!) hurricane?

Lisa, I have lived in hurricane country all my life. The key is knowing when to leave and where to evacuate. For a tropical storm, or very minimal hurricane (75-80 mph winds), you're usually ok, especially if you're on the left side, and not near any large trees . Anything over that, we usually evacuate, trying to stay on the left side. Tornados on the right side are a real threat. The problem in Hawaii is you don't have a lot of room in which to evacuate.

WKORV is starting to get socked in. Can't see Lanai anymore. Not much wind yet, but some light rain. It is kind of interesting to sit on a 6th floor lanai, looking towards the Sheraton, and watch the weather slowly roll in. I'm actually looking forward to the experience, after 15 years of perfect weather when coming here. The eye of the storm will actually pass perhaps 100 miles from here.

That might be a coincidence. There's no more wind than usual, and only some rain.

I just noticed that all the webcams are down.

I just checked and got the same result. Kind of strange. I wonder if the satellite service is down because of extreme rain/clouds? Or maybe just all of the servers are overloaded from people like me (and you).

The sky has actually cleared up a little and I can see part of Lanai.

We are in Waikoloa on the BI, and there are still people out back of the units just sitting in the BBQ area. They were out there a while ago with little kids, who were hitting the lava rocks with big sticks. Apparently not concerned with what is about it come. Me? I am taking Tylenol PM to weather the storm.

Update: The resort asked us to bring all our patio furniture into the unit and to fill our bathtubs with water in case Maui County shuts the water off. Things still pretty calm here and the storm path is looking to be a bit further south of Maui after it passes over the Big Island. We were out in the pool until about 5 when one short burst of rain came through. We thought it might be the "start" of the storm, but as the posts above have reported, it passed. The heaviest rain and winds now expected overnight in Maui.

Local news is providing a bit of comedy (in my mind) trying their best to report SOMEthing...one reporter on site in Hilo spent 5 minutes talking about how the wind was so strong some signs hanging in front of shops at a local strip mall were actually banging into each other...the horror! :hysterical: I'm happy it looks like it won't be too terrible. I know some of the eastern facing communities on the Big Island have had some flooding due to the storm surge, but nothing too catastrophic. Not many updates on Julio coming through yet, but for some time the predictions have had it veering north a decent amount.

I was visiting my son on Oahu in July when Tropical Storm Wally came thru. I heard rain like I've never heard in my life in the middle of the night, but it was mostly gone in the morning. The rest of the week was mostly cloudy, but it didn't stop us from doing anything at all. My daughter was renting a place on the beach in Kailua and it was very bizarre. The beautiful blue/green water turned black from the place where the waves were breaking to the shore, but the water behind it was still blue. My DIL said it happens rarely that the dirty ground water gets leached into the ocean after a storm. She said they close the beaches when it happens because of the bacteria level. That would be a real disappointment if the weather was great and you couldn't go in the water.

It seems like the big island gets hit first and worst with these storms. It's very strange weather they are having right now. My grandchildren are happy though. The school year start date has been delayed.

It is fairly windy this morning, but it has been this windy other times I've been here. It is the first day of my vacation that the sky is covered in clouds, but it is not bad at all. We dodged this one.

The weather apps on my iPad (Intellicast and MyRadarPro) both show the track for Julio veering well north, though Julio seems well organized. Iselle is pretty much breaking up.

Julio looks to be the one to punch the north shore of Kauai. If it keeps on its present track, Princeville will be on the dirty side of it. Not a good place to be. Hopefully it will dissipate like Iselle.

I'm headed to Kauai tomorrow. I'll be at Princeville on Sunday. We'll see what happens.

I just heard on the news that Julio's course is expected to be about 200 miles from the islands. That would be great. Good luck.

How are things at the Westin this morning? I am seeing flooding on the news, but not sure where.

No big issues at WKORV or the Lahaina area for that matter. Some flooding on the east side of the Big Island, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. Maui was largely spared as the Big Island really broke up the storm.

Local radar is looking like some of the cells re-combined on the other side of Maui and may be giving Oahu and Kauai some really heavy rains today (and flooding), but the strength of the storm seems to have passed.

Julio doesn't look to be any sort of a threat anymore, except perhaps for the northeast coast of Kauai which may get some offshore swell.
