Happy Aloha Friday

Happy Aloha Friday!

When we visited the Big Island in 1992, there was a parking lot near Kīlauea's Halemaʻumaʻu pit crater. You could walk up right to the edge of the crater which I did to get these pictures.

DW didn't want to get near the edge. She stayed in the car and even made me leave the keys.

Smart woman! In 2018 the crater collapsed, taking most of the parking lot with it.

I am also a Railfan, and went to see the Big Boy earlier this month as part of the western tour. We saw it a few years ago at the Roseville yard outside of Sacramento, and had planned to drive up and see it there again. But we decided that since we were planning to spend the night in Sacramento anyway, we would leave a bit earlier in the day to see the Engine in action and hit the Marysville, CA whistlestop. That worked out well. It was more fun to see the train moving, plus it poured with rain the day the engine was on display in Roseville.

Happy Aloha Friday!

Back in 2017 we stayed at the Blacksand Beach not far from South Point at Sea Mountain Timeshare for a week. We made several trips to Volcano National Park. One day when we were at the Visitor Center they announced they would be doing their monthly hike down into the Crater. We quickly signed up. The Lead Ranger carried a Special Radio and a variety of Sensors. He warned us that if we saw him running we had better follow. We descended the Crater Wall just across from the Visitor Center. So we were aways from the then existing Lava Lake/Pool. It was about a 400-500 Foot descent on a switchback Trail. Then we walked out into the Center. It was very interesting. There was Pele' Hair everywhere. We came back a different route. There was a Lava Flow at the time but it was all underground to the Sea Side Cliffs. The same night we did the 4 mile hike out and 4 mile hike back to see the Lava shooting into the ocean at night. We also viewed the Lava Pool at night. We spent the night in a 2 Bedroom Unit at KMC. At the time there was a Museum and Parking Lot by the Lava Pool. We have been back but the Museum was gone and they no longer did hikes into the Crater.
