Fires on Maui and in Lahaina

I realize that cell towers and power is out on West Maui but any updates from folks who are staying in the Kaanapali resorts area would be appreciated. The Snorkel Store website in the area says no power but they are open to accept returns only, so it mustn't be as bad as the devastation in Lahaina? I checked Delta Airlines and their flights into Maui seem to be in some type of "encountered a problem" status, at least for the next 2 days.
Westin cancelled our villa for this week.

So sad! My heart goes out to all residents, and their loved ones.

Does anyone know if Maui locals (or officials?) prefer that visitors put off travel to, vs still come and spend in, Maui at this time? Rescheduling a vacation is nothing compared to rebuilding after such (sadly ongoing) devastation, but would likely mean at least a year’s postponement for us.

What’d be better for the community?
Yes, advising only essential travel to Maui. Roads are closed to resort areas.

Just received this
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we regret that it is necessary to cancel your upcoming reservation at Marriott's Maui Ocean Club. Please do not travel to the island of Maui at this time.

Fires on the island have caused significant damage to the surrounding area and currently all roads to and from the resort are closed until further notice.

last time we were there
Laughing. So true. Not sure last time you were there. I did it on a bike 25 yrs ago. You should have seen it then. Then, about a decade ago, it seemed like they had parts of it closed for widening/ general fixing at some point every winter I was there. By the last time I did it vs 25 yrs ago, it was a MUCH nicer road, though on a bike it didn't really matter. Scary but awesomely beautiful. A bike is the way to do it, if you're used to riding stuff like that of course. Stop wherever you want. Nobody has to be white-knuckling driving.
The West Loop almost certainly has armed guards (;)) stopping people from driving that way right on the edge of Wailuku. If you don't live there, you ain't getting there. Even if someone lives in Kapalua, they may not / probably won't get thru

We are just heartbroken about the fires and the devastation on the beautiful island of Maui. We have been traveling to Hawaii for nearly 40 years and we know it will never be the same without Lahaina. We pray for the people.

Not sure if this has already been reported:

According to Maui Now, the HDOT said this this morning:

Transportation officials urge visitors to leave; halt any non-essential travel to Maui

5:05 a.m., Aug. 9, 2023

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is urging visitors to leave while emergency crews continue work to put out wildfires on Maui, and halt any non-essential travel to Maui in light of devastating and damaging fires. Motorists are reminded that it is critical to leave roads open for emergency personnel only. The HDOT advises that visitors looking to leave the island can contact Southwest Airlines, which has 1,000 seats available as of this morning.

I have been following the Hurricane Dora news and reports about wind and power outages. Yesterday morning, the news reported that the Lahaina area fire was 100% contained, but then the wind whipped it up again and wow, so devastating :bawl:! I hope that the people and pets are safe. We love Maui and have been looking to relocate there in the future.

So sad, praying for the burn victims.

Traveling anytime soon? Just get a cancellation?

Communication lines (major fiber optic connection) will be down in West Maui for at least a month.

Kim just got back from one of her Ukulele groups and they are working with other local groups that are organizing help.

Some boats are going over Friday to bring people to Molokai if needed. Winds are too rough for anything sooner.

They are also organizing donations they hope to deliver on Friday.

Does anyone have any news on Syed and Cheri? I understand they don’t live in Lahaina town, but it sounds like there are also fires in Kula and Kihei??
They are well. Off-island

Are any TUGgers on Maui currently?

We have friends on the Big Island. I hope they are okay. They are at Kona Coast.

I wonder if our trip to Maui next week will get cancelled by Westin and United Airlines.
I would say chances of your trip being cancelled are pretty good. Even if Westin and UA don't notify you of a cancellation you might want to think hard if you want to go. The governor is asking tourists not to come, and that's for the entire island.

If anyone is planning on visiting Maui in the next few months, I would strongly reconsider and at least have a backup plan.

Realistically, this is going to take a long time to recover from. Lahaina will never be the same.
