Fires on Maui and in Lahaina

Does anyone have any news on Syed and Cheri? I understand they don’t live in Lahaina town, but it sounds like there are also fires in Kula and Kihei??

Are any TUGgers on Maui currently?

We have friends on the Big Island. I hope they are okay. They are at Kona Coast.

I wonder if our trip to Maui next week will get cancelled by Westin and United Airlines.

So sad! My heart goes out to all residents, and their loved ones.

Does anyone know if Maui locals (or officials?) prefer that visitors put off travel to, vs still come and spend in, Maui at this time? Rescheduling a vacation is nothing compared to rebuilding after such (sadly ongoing) devastation, but would likely mean at least a year’s postponement for us.

What’d be better for the community?

Why would Westin or United cancel your trip?
Right now there's no electricity in Lahaina, roads are inaccessible, smoke is preventing flights from entering or leaving, the hospitals are overwhelmed. There's currently no estimate when those situations will be rectified. It makes little sense to go into a situation like this.

Fires on the Big Island as well. “newly reported flare-ups located near the Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach areas continue to burn.”—KHON

Hawai‘i Fire Deputy Chief Eric Moller said the blaze is burning between homes on Mauna Kea Resort property. At least two utility buildings belonging to the resort have burned down.

Vacation rentals Mauna Kea Fairways North have been evacuated.

What the heck is going on. Fire fighters have be battling a large acreage fire about 12/minutes/6miles from my house (just outside Austin) for the last 16 hours. It’s 40% contained. It has destroyed 1 apartment building in a complex.

High winds are knocking down power lines on Maui so there is no electricity and/or cell service in areas.

I’m getting news and video from KHON on YouTube.

Not being able to land on Maui after these devastating fires, or maybe accessibility to the Ka'anapali area, through the Lahaina area.

Did anyone say what started these fires ? I hope this wasn't another arson. Other concerns are strict building codes that might prevent rebuilding anything so close to the shoreline.

Very sad. We love the Hawaiian Islands...especially Maui. Sending thoughts/prayers to all those impacted (local or tourist).

Maui will not be the same without historic Lahaina town.

Lahaina town is gone. From the Safeway to pumana apartments. Banyan tree, front st etc. boats in the harbor. Expect to hear about human loss of life as well.
People are waiting in Malaeea for loved ones stuck on the other side. This is a devastating tragedy.

I realize that cell towers and power is out on West Maui but any updates from folks who are staying in the Kaanapali resorts area would be appreciated. The Snorkel Store website in the area says no power but they are open to accept returns only, so it mustn't be as bad as the devastation in Lahaina? I checked Delta Airlines and their flights into Maui seem to be in some type of "encountered a problem" status, at least for the next 2 days.

Very sad news indeed, I have watching this on the news..

This is heartbreaking for the Maui residents and all those of us who love Maui. Watching some of the videos on YouTube of residents trying to evacuate is shocking. People are driving through the firestorm to get out. It looks like the firestorm erupted quickly. We are sending thoughts and prayers to all impacted by this tragedy.

I have been watching for quite a while and didn't want to start a thread, it's just so devastating.

A few friends reached out to me telling me they are fine but everyone is in shock.

These winds are fueling fires on other islands too and we were able to see the flames of Lahaina from here on Molokai.

All I can say is prayers to all involved.

THis, and not wanting to pitch tents in the costco parking lot for 1000s of tourists with no way out. There is the West Loop. I've done it on a bike a dozen times. Doubt they want 100s of tourists driving that way either. And like it or not, believe it or not, Maui (Hawaii) is very much a controlled economy, so nobody will resort (hey a pun) to "Oh, the tourists will figure it out."

We were supposed to go tomorrow. Had a cancellation email from Westin this morning.

Very sad ....DH read that the high winds were from the hurricane which is still pretty far away.

OMG we did that west loop the last time we were there, for something to do on our last day, and I will never do that voluntarily again. That was scary. I can't imagine any volume of traffic, two way traffic, attempting that! Just my opinion, but the west end is scarier than the road to Hana and loop around the east end.
