Since late November my friend has had extreme pain in her right leg, starting at her calf it quickly spreads up to the top of her hip ... but only when standing. For some reason she's ok when walking, sitting, sleeping or climbing stairs...but as soon as she is standing still for 5 seconds the pain returns with a vengeance and only subsides when she moves. Grocery shopping doesn't bother her except for the cashier lineup. On a scale of 10 she rates the pain as 10 and it's been going on for months.

Her GP referred her to a vascular surgeon but even he doesn't know what it is. She's had an ultrasound Doppler test which showed a moderate plaque build up (76% ?) but not enough to operate. Left leg was clear. A varicose vein test showed they were just surface and not the cause of pain. On paper there's nothing wrong to explain the pain.

As the extreme pain when standing continues her doctor is giving her a CT scan tomorrow with dye

What suggestions do any of you have or questions to ask the doctor? I'm really worried about her...and so is she. Thanks so much.

Did your friend ask you to seek advice on her condition on her behalf? If not, I'd simply support your friend, and express interest in her receovery.

She is seeking treatment, so leave it at that. Some people are sensitive about their medical conditions, and I guess I'd err on the side of respecting someone's privacy. ;)

Brian, we can only hope her dr. gets her the proper tests, and maybe send her to a neurosurgeon...There are so many specialists these days.
That has to be very worrisome, and I hope the docs can figure it out. If it were Sciatica, it would hurt all the time, I think.
I wish her luck.

Yes, she asked me to post and even helped write it. Why would you think otherwise? TUG members usually freely share their experiences.

I had similar pain in my left leg

It was my IT band. If I do stretches regularly, I don't get it anymore.
