eagle cam [2012]

There's a great close-up of one of the chicks right now. Looks like the third egg has not hatched yet and the little one is climbing over it.

One of those babies is a handful! I'm watching it use every means available to scramble out from underneath the parent eagle. It seems ready to explore!

Edited to add: Just watched feeding of the two eaglets. Still waiting on that third egg to hatch...

The third egg hatched this morning.

Go to Youtube and search Decorah and you will find it if you'd like to see it.

I must have missed it this morning. When I check just before 10, there was 2 and an egg. When I come back after lunch, surprised to find a 3rd and no eggs left. Boy that last one was quick.

The third egg hatched this morning.
That is great news!

Snippet from local paper:

“Given the extreme cold and heavy snow, we weren’t sure any of the eggs would hatch. However, the eagles persevered through minus 40 degree wind chills, direct temperatures of minus 20 degrees, multiple snowfalls and drenching rain,” Anderson said.

The adult eagles “diligently cared for their eggs, taking brief breaks from incubation only when the weather allowed and working almost continuously to bring fresh material in for the nest … We are thrilled their skill and perseverance paid off.”

I saw all 3 yesterday, but it looked like the youngest one wasn't being fed at feeding time, so I wanted to wait and make sure it was okay. Earlier this morning they were all being fed. I guess that means lots more food to hunt - I remember from last year that once they start to really grow they really need lots of it.

Now that all 3 eggs are hatched, how long will the babies be in the nest before they try to fly?

Once again, google is your friend: "An eagle can take its first flight, some 10 to 13 weeks after hatching—when downy feathers are replaced by juvenile feathers."

So we still have quite a bit of time to watch them grow.

The 3 chicks are hungry this morning. All they do is eat. :D

I didn't see much activity yesterday -- simply "shelter in place" during rain, rain, rain! The poor parent eagle looked drenched.

I didn't watch them last week at all. I was shocked at how much they had grown when I tuned in yesterday. I watched them a lot yesterday and more this morning. Mom and Dad seem to be leaving the chicks alone for a fair amount of time now.

Wow, they sure are growing. All they do is eat and sleep when I watch.

I saw two move just now. They are about to wake up. One lifted it's head and the other one moved his little wing in the air. Amazing to be able to see that at home.

The eaglets are soooo big! I got to see the (youngest?) stretching his wings while gripping the sides of the nest. He gave several slow and powerful flap-flap-flaps!

2 or 3?

Are there still 3 chicks or is it now only 2. When I was looking a minute ago I only saw 2.

I saw three when I was watching earlier today ...[EDITED] ... and I see three right now.

There are definitely three. Sometimes two of them rest on top of each other or so close together that it's hard to tell them apart from the camera angle.

The parental pair at Decorah (IA) are fabulous and have successfully raised several sets of trips to fledging. There is a FB page dedicated to them, with lots of great updates and videos.

I haven't had a chance to watch during the day for a long time. The babies aren't babies and the nest looks like a landing pad. The circle of life...

Totally empty nest now - all 3 fledged this week. There's a time-lapse recap on their Facebook page (you don't have to log into Facebook) of each of the 3 fledging. Sad to see the empty nest, but wonderful at the same time for the parents and 3 fledglings.
