COVID infections from dinner event

There is no longer a mandate to wear masks here so none of the guests wore masks
And there’s the rub. I chose to be vaccinated, to protect myself, my family, and my community. Being able to go out without a mask is a wonderful perk. If my neighbor chooses to say No to vaccination for whatever reason, s/he should not be going to social gatherings unmasked. They are free to make decisions about their bodies. Why do they seem to feel free to make decisions about our bodies by pretending they are part of the vaccinated community who don’t need to mask?
There is no way that 100% of those guests are vaccinated. Hopefully, none of the vaccinated guests who got COVID have an immunocompromised family member at home.

It is of course never that simple. It was a dinner event in which masks would have to come off when eating, even if everyone was masked. We did not get physically close to others for any prolonged period during the night. I suspect the Delta variant is so contagious that when someone who had not been vaccinated was carrying it, the viral load was so high that it carried across the entire room.

Where was this event? Since a large number of people have not been vaccinated but they do go to events, stores and restaurants without wearing masks even though the CDC recommends that those that are NOT VACCINATED wear masks. Even without a MANDATE many people are still wearing masks them to protect themselves, I know we are. I just went to the supermarket today and all of the cashiers were wearing masks and most of the customers. There were a few workers and customers not wearing masks. The numbers are going up in all 50 states, so it is now becoming increasingly important to wear masks.

Nevada. Most of the guests were older retirees who have been vaccinated. If I have to guess a number, I would say 90% or more of the guests were vaccinated. Every member whom we personally know has been vaccinated. Mask is not the problem here. This was also a dining event, means it would have been mask off anyway. I believe the problem was that someone who was not vaccinated was spewing the Delta variant with high viral load. It might have been a server.

It would not have been considered a large event. About 50 guests in a room that holds 250.

We haven't been out to eat since March 2020 before we returned from Honolulu. We are planning on going out to dinner tomorrow night with my Brother-in Law and his wife who we haven't been togther with since we came home even though they live only 5 miles away. All 4 of us are vaccinated. Due to the virus and have been staying very isolated from people. We will be eating outside and wearing masks except to eat. I think I will call the restaurant to make sure the servers are wearing masks.

We have dined-in a few times now, but we take the precaution to eat during off times (3:00 pm to 5:00 pm). When the weather is nice, we dine outdoors.

Many servers are vaccinated and choosing to wear masks to protect themselves as best they can from their customers.
I have been enjoying the freedom of being vaccinated and gong maskless, but I probably need to rethink. And the longer this goes, the more mutations there will be.

We went out to breakfast this morning and I saw many more customers come into the restaurant wearing masks than I had seen in the past few weeks.

I hope your husband has a speedy recovery. Please keep us updated on his progress. Do you know of the other 4 who got it which vaccine they had? is there a pattern?

No particular pattern. We suspect that protection from the vaccine wanes. My husband got his first in Jan, second dose in Feb. I got my first in Mar, second dose in April. Separate from this event, my friend's close friend who lives in our community was out sick for 11 days with COVID and he had the Pfizer vaccine. The people who had the breakthrough infection are older, and hence also had their vaccines earlier. We really need to have a booster shot made available.

We are “older”. 70’s and had shots in Dec and January. I recently had an vaccine antibody test done at Lab Corp since I have an auto-immune disorder and am on methotrexate. It showed high level of antibodies. Made my doctor happy.

What is a high number? What number of antibodies did you have?

Getting vaccinated was never a question and we got them as soon as they were available to us. We have our flu shots every year and believe that vaccinations save lives. Now we are wondering if my husband got his too soon because protection wanes over time.
Best of luck. My thoughts are with you all.

The Spanish singer at our event, Antonio Carnota, died yesterday from COVID complications. Apparently he had an underlying heart condition. 3 different reports on his age, 42, 46 or 47. He was much too young to die! I don't know if he was vaccinated or not.

Someone told me today that 8 people were infected at the event.

Better to not be in crowds it appears.... still too iffy.

When you first posted this I was wondering if it was the singer that was the positive one that passed it along. It has always been mentioned that singing spread covid more effectively. It is all just sad.

Around here, most of us run around like all is back to normal. Your share is a good reminder that all is not normal and we need to still be mindful of COVID.

oh no! This is awful :( so sad. How's your husband doing? Glad he was given the antibiotics and hope he is better soon!

I hope your husband has a speedy recovery. So sad about the Spanish singer.

A tragedy, and so many lessons in this thread!

I hope your husband recovers quickly and that you will be able to stay healthy as well. I’m so sorry he got sick.

The death of Antonio Carnota is a true tragedy and a grim reminder that Covid is real and it’s dangerous.

I know we all want to go on about our lives like we used to - moving about freely, socializing, mask-free, etc. I certainly do. But, I think it’s time to admit that things have changed and that’s just not going to be possible. There is going to be a new “normal” and we’re going to have to adjust to it, until (and IF) we reach a point of immunity that allows things to return more to the normal we’re used to.

At least that’s how I feel. I’ll be getting my second vaccine in a week but I’ll be sporting a mask for a long, long time and curtailing some of my other activities. I’m good with that.
