Yeah - to me this is like people buying airplane tickets. So many people buy the cheapest ticket offered, which simply means that they have purchased a seat on a flight. Then they complain when the airline exacts a charge for services that are baked into the higher priced fares they shunned.

I think that if it is important for flyers to have seats where the travelers are all seated together, or where they will have an aisle seat, or to use overhead bin space, then the flyers should be ready to pay for that privilege. Instead you often see complaints from people who, having bought the cheapest ticket possible (which means that they will be placed in whatever seats are left over after people who did purchase seat selection have made their choices), are now complaining because they haven't received seats that meet their needs. People want to have their cake and eat it too.

To me this is a bit like timeshare exchangers, who complain that, as exchangers they were assigned to the dregs of the inventory remaining after owners made their reservations, and their reservation requests were not honored by the resort. To my thinking, the first obligation of the resort is to accommodate owners who are making reservations. Exchangers should get what is left over after returning owners have made their selections.
I agree with your first paragraph, but not the second. Exchangers complain when they trade INTO an Oceanfront unit but are given a parking lot mountain view unit. The resort uses the better unit for its own gain and screws the exchanger. The resort does not upgrade any owner as they always get their owned view category. The fair way is to give the view that the person exchanged into, even if not the best view in that category (though I disagree with this as well.)

This complaint is really about drip pricing that ought to be illegal. For decades an economy ticket included seat selection, 2 checked bags and a carry-on. I get it - this "forces" everyone to pay too much. I disagree, to be honest offer discounts as you go along instead of upcharges. Or to be most fair to everyone, expose at least on your website (ideally to the aggregators also) a filter system where people can say I want just a seat, or I want a preselected seat, a checked bag and a carry-on or whatever set so the filtered results show the actual price for what you're looking for.

Offer basic bundles sure - but don't make it so confusing as to what it is you're buying.
I think that if it is important for flyers to have seats where the travelers are all seated together, or where they will have an aisle seat, or to use overhead bin space, then the flyers should be ready to pay for that privilege.
I really disagree that selecting a seat should be a "privilege". Even Southwest seems to be moving towards assigned seating from this forum. It does not cost the airline extra once they allow any assigned seats. And it should make it possible to improve boarding, except the airlines steadfastly refuse to use better boarding processes.
I really don't understand the disdain some people have to exchangers - you're swapping an owned week for an owned week. Unless you think all guest certs should get dregs, this is literally a wider access version of you giving a different resort owner a guest cert for your week when they give you a guest cert at their resort for their week. I could see it for resort rented weeks because that's filling otherwise unused weeks.

Since we moved to rural Nevada, our closest Costco is in St. George, Utah. About a 40 mile drive we make once or twice a month. We use it mainly for prescriptions and bulk groceries. The hardline items for home improvement or furniture and appliances don’t fit our needs most of the time. Merchandise choices are much less interesting than they used to be. Even gas prices (while cheaper than just about everywhere) are better at an Indian Reservation station on an alternate route home. A savings of 50 cents a gallon adds up on a tankful. So our Costco shopping is less and less these days.

We were there yesterday, and they have the door scanners. Two people and two scanners at the door. No line. The woman told me to scan my card, and I asked why. She said, “That’s how we do it now. Your card has to match your picture.” I did, and she said I was ok, and to go in. I can see why they did it, I guess.

So then my husband scanned his card (even though we were together.) He did it to see if they’d have an issue with his picture. He worked at Costco for 25 years, at Refunds and Membership. They were making him a new membership card one time years ago, and a coworker put a refunded goofy stuffed animal in front of him while his picture was being taken for his card. It ended up as his AmEx card photo. It’s now in the Citi credit card system, and each time his Citi Costco card renews, his new card has that silly picture.

So yesterday they had a laugh about his goofy picture. She didn’t say he needed to replace his picture. So obviously, the reasons for the scanners at the door are just to weed out nonmembers.

At the register to check out, Jeff used his card with the goofy picture - and the cashier didn’t care that it didn’t match his face. He was paying for our purchases. Then I tried to use the Costco shop card they sent me after our recent cruise. We have separate account numbers, but my membership is tied to his Executive. I’m the spouse card. But the Costco Travel cruise was in my name.

They had trouble scanning the bar code, then the cashier wanted to know whose account the shop card was for. I had to explain that we were married, and my account was attached to Jeff’s, and we were together. The cashier finally decided it was okay, and finished the sale. It took longer explaining why there wasn’t a problem, than for him to just scan the code.

Then we had to wait at the Exit door while the receipt checkers counted every item in the cart twice, because she miscounted the first time, and we finally got out of there.

Kind of a PITA, overall.

I know they’re trying to weed out theft and all, but it seemed like a lot of overreach. And now I hear they’re raising membership prices. Technology is expensive, I suppose.

Growing pains? Not sure. But they have far to go to get back to where they used to be.

I’m a Costco loyalist (a member since 1982) but processes need to be sorted out.

I am, and we do. Most of our ongoing regular prescriptions come from Tricare that way. But because of how Tricare bills things, and the cost of copays, it's often much cheaper to get certain scripts from a local pharmacy. Some generics have a copay of just a couple of dollars through a pharmacy. Tricare's minimum copay is $13 now.

@DaveNV You booked your cruise through Costco? Did you feel you saved money? I am curious because we booked our first one through Costco, back in 2015, and we booked our second direct through Norwegian, which was very similar to your Mediterranean cruise. We went in April for cooler temperatures.

Yes and yes. I had a cruise initially booked directly through Celebrity, but it was cancelled due to Covid. I had a substantial credit left on my Celebrity account. When time came to try rebooking, I went through Costco Travel. They were able to port the Celebrity credit across for me, and they saved me a lot of money. Celebrity's price for the same cruise was higher. Costco not only was able to use the credit, but they were able to put my cruise cost into some sort of package deal. I got an even lower cruise price, plus an Onboard Credit to use on the ship, and a Costco Shop Card after the cruise. By paying for the cruise with my Citi Costco card, I'll get an extra percentage back at the end of the year. Win-win all the way around.

Costco Travel is considered a Cruise Partner, so becomes a de facto Travel Agent. I'd definitely start with Costco Travel to get a price on a cruise they offer, then compare it to the cruise company's website pricing. If you have a Travel Agent you normally use, then tell them what you have, and let them get you an even better deal.

This is good to know. We went back and forth on the prospect of going through Costco a second time, and the Norwegian person said booking direct with the cruiseline was cheaper and had more perks. I didn't see any perks we couldn't get with Costco. But our kids booked direct because they booked a Haven suite that slept five. They have to book a bigger suite. There are very few on the ship.

The "free" drink package when taken off actually saved us the gratuity charge. We really did get a good deal, but next time, it will be Costco again.

Use to be you could shop as a non member if you had a costco gift card. Will that still be true?

Close enough. We have the executive membership and it pays for itself.
It doesn’t pay for me. I tried to get my daughter on mine, we have many proofs of same address in Wisconsin, and she buys groceries for me the five months I am there. I don’t get the gas because there are always ten to twelve cars in line at each pump. Plus the Costco is about 55 miles away in Wisconsin. So she has a membership and I have one, but definitely does not pay for itself.

Just saw an article (which I can't find again) with a few ways to get around this new policy. Using a gift card was one. Coming in with a friend is another, but I don't think you could pay for your own items as you'd need to show your Costco card.

Now that they're scanning membership cards at the entrance doors, maybe not. I'd ask them directly.

Unless you shop at Costco.com. You can save a ton that way, without ever entering the warehouse.

This must be rolled out gradually to the stores. We were in the MyrtleBeach one yesterday and business was as usual.

I tried last night, $3 delivery per item, o thing perishable, didn’t seem like a bargain especially since I can’t finish the dishwasher detergent or laundry detergent in a reasonable time period.

I'm curious to know if laundry and dishwasher detergents expire. I tend to purchase them in bulk from stores like Costco.

They claim they do. I have to leave them for several months. The dishwasher detergent definitely loses its potency. I was running dishwasher twice until I bought new pods.

I have never experienced this, though given I run the dishwasher an average of 2x a day it seems, the 100 pack from Sams doesn't last "that long". I have had some I've kept to the side in my "timeshare go bag", but so far it's just been about a year at most, and because timeshare dishwashers themselves are so different from my home one, IDK if the pods are "weakening". Though given my experience with other cleaners, I kind of doubt it "ages" at all, certainly not very quickly.

I tend to think the powders or sheets are even more shelf stable -> I've had OxiClean sit for a year or two and it's been "fine" to my eyes.

That said, for washing at home, I've cut back to "shout" which seems to last near forever, because I almost never use it, and detergent sheets from Temu for cheap ($7 for 300) and a maybe a "scam" thing that goes between the cold water inlet and the washer to hydrogen peroxide the water a bit which seems to help (or maybe just using cold water alone and the mechanical action would do a lot, IDK for sure.

No expiration, but it does make sense that it loses potency over time. The one I have now is from Costco with 81 packets, and given my use and travel schedule one of those tends to last a year or so, and generally seems fine to me.

Always store detergent in a cool, dry place and use within a few months of purchase. Although dishwasher detergent does not have a technical expiration date, it loses effectiveness over time or if improperly stored

81 packets in a place where I spend four to five months will be Enough for three or four years for me

I booked a Disney cruise through Costco after some comparison shopping it was definitely the best deal, even better than booking through DCL directly or through any of the Disney Cruise Travel agents. The base prices were very similar no matter which option I chose, but the Costco booking included a $325 Costco Gift Card plus I get 5% back (3% on the Citi Visa plus 2% on the Executive Membership)

Ok. I don't buy groceries online. I was referring to hardline things, like clothing or electronics.
