Well I too cheap to drive somewhere and pay for parking. I would rather ride my bike, take the subway, or walk. Of course you have to drive if we go to Costco.
Ahh - you must live in a city. I have to go 25 miles one way to get to something, and 44 one way to get to a Sam's Club so I'm not able to bike that, nor would I want to in the weather around here.

I would starve if the grocery store was more than a 10 minute walk from my house. We end up going there 5 or 6 times a week.

Yeah riding my bike to work when it is 35 degrees and raining isn't fun but I need the exercise. At least in the Summer it is rarely hot and never too humid.

I can't imagine doing with only one car. If I want/need to go someplace I want my car available. If it gets to the point where one, or the other of us can't drive then we'll downsize to one car.

Me neither. We are down to five vehicles and even though none of them get driven too much they all serve a purpose.

I get that. Last time they changed my oil and air filter it was $175. I dropped my insurance except for the required liability.

I changed the oil on 5 vehicles a month ago. It takes about 30 gallons of oil and 5 oil filters. I'm thinking the cost was under $200 ordering online from Walmart. It was delivered to the house.

Do you take appointments? I'll drop it off while I pick up some Tamales from Los Hernández.

I couldn't imagine the maintenance fees on 6 cars... I'm cheap and cut our family back to 1 car.
Definitely cheaper. Folks are now selling their houses (not paying maintenance, taxes, insurance or utilities) and living in 20 year old motor homes in Walmart parking lots. They are saving a lot of money….

Yeah, not sure if it still the case, but I recall Ohio having no sales before noon on Sunday. Had to go to church first.
Do you have to show your offering plate receipt before purchasing your booze on Sunday afternoons? :ROFLMAO:
Brings to mind this old thread:

I was so taken with Sharlene that I forgot to mention that Daisy picked up a likker license. Now she's going upscale and added wine to the dinner menu. Got some nice selections, too. Right now she's featuring

  • World Championship Riesling
  • NASCARbernet
  • Chef Boyardeaux
  • Peanut Noir
No rosés, though. When I asked about that Daisy said she had it covered - they just mix together some Riesling and cabernet - they call it World Championship NASCAR.

*****

No wine on the Sunday dinner menu, though. She had it there at first, but apparently some of the folks in the after service crowd from the Baptist Church objected. So some lades from the Baptist Women's Auxiliary paid her a visit, and after prayer for her soul and what-not, she pulled wine from the Sunday menu.

But if you ask your waitress they'll still pour some for you; you just have to know how to ask. And I hear that Doris Hilburn, the Baptist Women's secretary, has suddenly taken a liking to having some of Daisy's "white cranberry juice" with her Sunday meal.

OR MAYBE... just put handheld scanners at each kiosk, so I don't have to unload and re-load the cart. Especially with the size and weight of some of the Costco stuff.

Why can't they get their act together in regard to technology. Maybe have store inventory online, so I don't go to a store looking for a specific item to find they don't have it.
They intentionally don't have hand scanners because there is much more theft with these. Allowing customers to scan their own baskets without removing items to the holding area leads to more "missed" scans. "Oh, I must have missed that one." To make customers take everything out and then replace reduced significantly the shrinkage, as they are less apt to place it from the cart to the holding area.

You also miss that the lack of online inventory search is also intentional. The same reason that they constantly move things around and make you search in store for your regulars, is why they don't want you to know what exactly they have. They like you going through the whole store even though you might only be looking for a few things. A big psychological part of Costco's strategy is the hunt. Why do you think the $5 chicken is in the back of the store? (hint: you can search instacart same day delivery and get a good idea of actual inventory.)

They have inventory control at the exit.

I've noticed that when I leave Costco, they don't always check the number of items I've purchased, even though it's their standard procedure. Sometimes when I point this out, the staff looks a bit guilty and acknowledges the oversight.

I think that you mean 30 QUARTS (not gallons) of oil. I have never had a vehicle require more than 6 quarts per change. What are you driving? Over-the-road Peterbuilt diesels?

The main thing they do is put the highlighter mark on the receipt. That's to keep someone from reentering the store, loading the cart with the same items, then presenting the receipt as proof of purchase.

Correct, but that does not change what I posted. Self hand scanning is the highest theft/shrink rate of all methods of checkout. If you have a huge basket of items, with small items piled at the bottom, not making the customer remove all items them put them back after paying leads to a lot of non-scanned items.

Receipt check is spotty at best, as Ken555 notes. It is just a deterrent like TSA. I've never had them actually count all items when I have a full basket, it would be practically impossible.

I am less and less enamored with Costco all the time. I think the prices have risen dramatically (Yes - everywhere - but more so at Costco) and the quality has dropped off.

But what really gets me is the poor check out. I have to wait on a line with 20 or so people waiting to use the self-check out. Costco employees are asking to check everyone's card, but how about helping to scan instead. OR MAYBE... just put handheld scanners at each kiosk, so I don't have to unload and re-load the cart. I do appreciate when they get some interesting 'internet' food for a price that is much less than sold on the internet - because I would never order that stuff and not have a chance to try it otherwise. I know my wife likes the clothing.

If it was up to me - I would cancel our membership.

Well, it's ok if you cancel as there are plenty of us who appreciate Costco. They certainly set the standard for clean and orderly. My wife and I were talking following a recent visit and took special notice of the cheerful, helpful, and happy employees.

Has anyone found a committed, helpful, and happy Walmart employee - I keep looking for one and heard there was one in Tulsa - I must visit there.

Like any other store, Costco can be more money than another store but there are also some great deals at Costco. If you used those items membership is worth it. For example their Light Jarlsberg Cheese, Nitrate Free Canadian Bacon and Gluten free pizza items are way less in price than any other store.

That geezer greeter at the front of the store seems happy for his minimum wage!

I would assume that is another reason to check at the exit. According to AI:

## Why Costco Checks Receipts

**Costco checks receipts primarily for two reasons:**

1. **Preventing Overcharging or Undercharging:** This is the main reason. By quickly glancing at your receipt and your cart, Costco ensures you've been charged correctly. It helps catch errors made by cashiers, such as accidentally scanning items twice or missing items entirely.
2. **Deterring Shoplifting:** While this isn't the primary goal, checking receipts does act as a deterrent for shoplifting. It makes it less likely for someone to try to leave the store with unpaid items.

It might seem like a minor inconvenience, but this practice helps Costco maintain accurate pricing and inventory while also protecting its merchandise.

Wow, never thought of that, honest people don't really consider the devious way that thieves think.

Not Costco but I've also heard of people looking in trash outside stores for receipts, then go in and take another item off the shelf to present for a refund using the receipt, devious.

Yea, it can be a pain getting things going when you don't drive them all the time, but OTOH when you've got one vehicle in the shop having a spare saves a lot on renting a car and I don't need to pay for car rental insurance in my car insurance.

And we did drop one car down and I'm not sure the scheduling between the 3 users is worth the savings - you'd have to ask them, but there's a lot of seeming stress between the 3 people. It can be hard enough scheduling an appointment between work and home tasks, forget about now mixing in 2 other peoples potential schedules! It can be done, but there's a lot of overhead.

Then again through inheritance we now have an extra pick-up truck, which is an expense and we really need to decide which one to keep I think...

I think Sam's scan and go must also help with this - there's no physical receipt, there is a QR code the exit checker scans, and then they scan 3 or so random items in the cart. Usually the higher value items. If the item scanned wasn't in the app checkout, you get sent over to customer service to fix the issue. And you can't get the same QR code again, once it's scanned it goes away from the app, and even if you screenshotted it, the scanner would see it was already "redeemed".

Not Costco but heard there is a Home Depot at 500 S Santa Fe Dr, Denver, CO where they have the isles secured dt theft problems. Sad times.

Most stores, maybe all of them, refund back to the original form of payment and they don’t even need the physical credit card to do it. I pay everything with a credit card and I would guess that is by far the most common payment method. You give me hope that someday I might find a free credit on my statement.
