Coronavirus is Bad but US Flu's New Numbers Still Far Worse

Hell- if you need to see a doctor- let's say for something not related to a flu- I would not even want to go to a doctors office- or to an urgent care center or a hospital with all the sick people there! Forget about visiting someone in a nursing home!s

So either this thing is more serious than they are letting on- like a plague- or the CDC is making people worry needlessly.

I have my standard check blood/see doctor six month appt at the end of the month. Canceling that on Monday just to not be sitting in a waiting room with sick people. As it is I hate going to physical therapy in the same building twice a week.

Many people could have had or have it already but think they have the flu and stay home get better and back to work. I’ve had a cough now for a few days, could It be? Maybe! Am I getting tested? No, because it’s cold and flu season and what can we do? Flood the health systems? I think this has been mixed in for a while it’s just that no one is testing for it because we haven’t had the kits and the “you’re fine it’s most likely not covid19” mentality..... who’s to say?

Just live. You can only do what you can. Worry does nothing but makes you sick. You have the wisdom to understand this all.

I guess that’s my point!! We purchased the mattress! Laid all over a bunch of them. Shook hands twice with 2 salespeople! Oh, and typing on my phone with my contaminated hands. Now when I get home I will wash my hands! Lol!

Same with me last week.

I have come to the conclusion that there is so much I can do. Most is not in my control.

At least you washed your hands. That is the most important thing we can do when we get home.

Just now my other half came back from a gathering in our community for the car enthusiast club. I was cooking all morning and what does he do?, he puts his fingers in one of the pieces of egg frittata I made without washing his hands. He tastes it, doesn’t care for it because it has mushrooms and wants to put it back for me to eat. It ended up in the garbage.

I explained wash you hands, he didn’t do it right and he was upset with me. He has been doing it right the last few days so now he didn’t why?

Unless I follow him 24/7 or throw him out of the house neither which I will do I will have increased risk. Just like with any other sickness that can be transmitted.

It made me realize I just got to let go and accept things as they are. My sister has a saying not connected to the virus but came to mind now, live and enjoy life or wait at home to die.

How are they going to nip this in the bud? I mean I do not see how it can be stopped. Despite the regular flu shots, the hand washing and so forth the flu is still killing more people than ever.

The latest report from the CDC states less than 40% of adults in the US receive the flu shot.

I work in health care and have always washed my hands frequently. Not only is it policy but is just good hygiene and common sense. Health care workers who do not wash hands or surfaces properly are often responsible for hospital/ facility acquired disease. I wash hands and surfaces frequently not just to protect myself but to protect my patients and my own family at home.

There is no vaccine and medicine for COVID19. While there are many who catch flu and may lose their lives, hospitals can keep usual operation. COVID19 may cause pandemic. If that should happen, there would be serious shortage of medical service. That could dramatically increase the death toll. You may not see any risk around you. But the current situation should not be underestimated. The virus has traveled coast to coast secretly. And the number of cases are low while enough tests are not being done.

I think the deaths not taken into consideration due to shortage of medical services are other types of illnesses.

As long as we are making comparisons with other dangers, how about 36,000 deaths per year due to auto accidents? Anyone stop driving?

In a serious note, somewhat along the lines of what Panina has been posting, I just don't see how the spread of COVID19 will be stopped. As far as numbers, it is too early to compare with the flu. What is particularly concerning about COVID19 (at least to me) is the very high death rate among the elderly (somewhere in the neighborhood of 14% among those in China who had contracted the disease). So what are my plans? Given that I don't think the spread can be stopped, I am not doing anything terribly special but live my life and hope the odds are with me.

There are no quarantines for the flu. You can't potentially be stuck while traveling because a large portion of the population has had a flu shot and won't become ill if they come in contact.

If we look back at our early childhood we accept everything people tell us. Even the most analytical thinkers can be predictably irrational however, the smart ones acknowledge and address those irrationalities. ;)

It seems elderly and those with underlining issues are the ones with higher risk of death. The reason coronavirus can be so bad is because how quick it seems to spread, many more of us may get it then the flu, spreading it, thus more of the elderly and those with underlining issues get it and the death rate goes up.

Those of us who may get it or think we have it and have minimal risk need to be aware to minimize spreading it. Staying away from others is the best thing you can do to help not spread it.

I wonder how many people told to self quarantined at home with minimal symptoms don’t listen and have gone out and have spread it?

I had to threaten my DH the other day that if he didn’t start washing his hands before messing around in the kitchen I was packing up the one child still at home and heading to the beach house without him. Argh!!!

He must know I meant it because he’s upped the hand washing since then.

Here's an interesting documentary by a Canadian living under quarantine in Wuhan. The Chinese response to the coronavirus just doesn't have the look and feel of a rational response to the seasonal flu, but something the government is convinced is much more dangerous.

I couldn’t watch the video as it wouldn’t let but have no doubt that China did not tell the truth and it is much worse then their numbers. My guess many more got it and many more deaths and even more never tested.

I've rescheduled 5 Doctor, Dentist, Ophthalmologist, etc. regularly scheduled appointments until June. Maybe overkill. Who knows...

I don’t blame you. My husband has to see his new doc for the first time this month in order to get his high blood pressure meds renewed.

I am scheduled with the same doc next month. No rush for me except in need a script for a mammogram. I have one from my NY doctor but I don’t think my ACA insurance here in NH will honor it since it is a doc out of their network.

I am going to call and ask tomorrow. But not crazy about going into any medical facility.

I changed a doctor's appt from in-person to telephone. If needed the doctor can do a videoconference before having to see in person.

I only have concerns about seeing PCPs or being in ER. I have no concerns seeing specialists and I continue to keep my appointments.

Dh is supposed to have an elective surgery when we get home from Maui. He has already decided to postpone it. At first he was planning on talking to the surgeon first, now he's saying he just plans to tell him he wants to postpone.

What is the protocol regarding relatives that are coming home for Easter after 60 days of Philippines, Bali , Taiwan, Singapore and Cairns ? One of my grand daughters is pregnant and I wonder if we should be around the traveling relatives right after their trip.

No, COVID19 is not the flu. Like prior coronavirus pandemics, the onset of life threatening symptoms, including acute respiratory distress, is swift and severe. An example from the location where nearly all of the U.S. deaths occurred:

Some Life Care Center residents have gone from no symptoms to acute symptoms within an hour, Killian said.
"We've had patients die relatively quickly under those circumstances."

COVID19 is not the flu.
