buying in Ocean Pointe, FL

Well . . . . I gotta say that this is certainly an interesting & thoughtful thread. What I get out of this ( and I hope that any potential purchaser does as well ) is that there exists no one single way to do Marriott timeshare. Not to say that some strong opinions do not exist on both sides of the coin. But ultimately, it is your money to spend in the manner which you feel most comfortable with. I'm not gonna rain on anyone's MVC parade as I'd like to believe that that there's room for all approaches. It's great that folks are weighing in from both sides with thoughts/opinions.

Ultimately, the MVC product sells itself and we owners are simply fence posts which help to define the timeshare territory. It's important that potential purchases see the big picture without dogmatic hubris. It's all about your being satisfied with your destination travel purchase. I guess that the only other point to remember is that just like life Life itself, MVC is not a static entity and it too experiences change and alteration. Despite the present economic/pricing uncertainty, life will indeed move forward for Marriott timeshare and most of us should enjoy the ride.

"It is here on these forums that I continue to read disparaging things about the illogic of owners who buy from the developer rather than on the resale market, and here where any arguments to the contrary are dismissed out of hand by folks who haven't shared the same experience. That's condescending and I don't like it."

AMEN!
It is distasteful to question someone's intelligence for being able to buy direct.

I'm sold on waiting and researching thanks to you guys but the salesperson we got DID outright tell us that Marriott direct purchasers would get preference to those who are resale purchases. He also denied anyone can use a Vacation Adviser. .....and also tried to tell us you can only buy enough points if you fall 10% short (a lot of these things came out when I was questioning him after starting this thread, but he did tell us about the advantage of being a direct customer in the first pitch).

Thinking twice about a major purchase is never a bad decision; good luck with whatever you decide to do! We love our travel options and have no regrets.

I just want to mention that our salesperson did not mention a preference at all, not even when I asked for the differences between developer- and resale-purchases. She mentioned only the trading-for-points, and the reputation of the Marriott brandname within the travel industry (which we already knew and appreciated.)

I'm not trying to disparage myself and appreciate all the help. I do think that the direct purchaser side doesn't need too much defending as the companies themselves represent their product quite hard and do whatever they can while selling so you don't "hear" the other perspective. I was glad I got to. For what we want to do...the points system sounded appealing. The added price for silver @ OP for the current exchange rate was just not worth it to us. Now...trading for 110K @ the Grand Chateau...and maybe buying an every other year IF we want to be a Marriott customer...or buying an even cheaper property as others have pointed out are still on the table for us (we do love our Vegas also). We really did like Ocean Pointe and would like to get in there, but I'm thinking we'll be doing it via a resale or exchange in from something else at this point.

One thing all of this has done though. Before this trip, we were not considering a time share. Now...I think we WILL buy one...just need to figure out what we want to do and how we want to go about it.

Thanks everyone! I WILL definitely have more questions.
