Baseball playoffs

It would be nice if the Blue Jays win tonight and win the World series against the LA Dodgers but from the teams payroll, I hope Seattle will win the World Series because they have the lowest team payroll of the 3 teams.
I'm tired of seeing teams like the LA Dodgers or the NY Yankees winning the World Series because they spend much more money than the other teams.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers, $321,287,291
5. Toronto Blue Jays, $239,642,532
16. Seattle Mariners, $146,793,414

It isn't all about payroll. That can make you consistently competitive, but it may not always win championships. Just look at the Yankees. They haven't won since 2009. The highest paid team this year, the Mets, didn't even make the playoffs. It takes a lot of luck, people staying healthy and a cohesive clubhouse.

That said, I would have no problem seeing the Dodgers lose to either the Mariners or the Jays. They came into MLB in the same expansion year.

Edited to add: I looked at the link and it seems that the Blue Jays have the fifth highest payroll in MLB.

After the game five loss, I suspect most Blue Jays fans are happy your prediction was wrong.
The Jays fans are so happy my prediction was wrong. LOL
I was watching the Cowboys on the television whipping Washington in Dallas, Texas.

The Yankees have not been in a World Series since 2009.
Correction the Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009.

The interesting thing about the Jays is that much of their success this year has come from players NOT making big money.

The Mariners pitched around Ernie Clement last game. The Jays signed him to a minor league contract a couple years ago after his previous team released him. He's nominated for 2 gold gloves this year and is hitting 0.447 with a 1.121 OPS in the post season. He makes under $2MM this year.

Meanwhile the offseasons big free agent signing Anthony Santander has been either ineffective or injured the entire season, and his average annual value is $18.5 MM.

Addison Barger has been great, and he makes less than $1MM, and Lauer ($2.2MM) pitched better this year overall than Scherzer ($15MM).

Should be a well watched game
Will be available on Fox OTA channels

Exact spending a lot of money doesn't guarantee you will be champion but it increases your chance if your team is among the 15 highest payroll (top half).
As per https://brewerfanatic.com/blogs/entry/136-team-payroll-and-winning-the-world-series/, since 1995, 48% of the champions and 38% of the contestants in the World Series have had top 5 payrolls. 93% of the champions and 83% of the contestants have been in the top half of payroll.

The Blue Jays (5th highest) spent ~$82M less than the Dodgers (2nd highest).
The Mariners (16th highest) spent ~$93M less than the Blue Jays and ~$175M less than the Dodgers.

The Mariners with the 16th highest payroll are in the bottom half of payroll and thus they have 7% of chance to be champion using the stats since 1995.

It is now over
Congratulation to the Blue Jays
I know what team I will be rooting for in the World Series

Blue Jays are always going to have to spend more to be competitive.

I'd argue that the Jays are already competitive.

I wouldn't bet on them. The Dodgers are "we've got Murderer's Row the sequel, but they're now Japanese" But I hope the Jays win.

I think he meant that the Jays will have to spend more than other teams to be equally competitive. Many free agents prefer not to come to Toronto (customs hassles, living in Canada vs the USA, etc). So to get an equal quality team to a US-based contender the Jays would usually have to pay more, since they generally need to overpay to get free agents.

I don't gamble on sports, but I think the odds reflect your pessimism for the Jays. Polymarket has the Dodgers at 69% chance of winning. I think that's probably a bit high (these are both good teams) but I'm not an unbiased observer of the Blue Jays.

yes, Kalshi shows similar odds

Only six teams have much hope of nabbing Japanese superstars -- the west-coast teams where it isn't an full-day thing to fly home.

Oh for sure. I believe the Jays offered Ohtani at least as much money as the Dodgers and probably more, and he still chose to stay in SoCal for a bunch of lifestyle reasons (and likely felt he had a better chance to win). And while Toronto is only 15% farther from Tokyo than Los Angeles, closer than most MLB cities and has multiple non-stops to Japan, I primarily meant US born players.

If you're from so cal, Florida, or the southern USA then Toronto is a foreign country and you might prefer to stay in the USA. They've had better success recently with foreign free agents (eg Santander is Venezuelan, Ryu from Korea, etc).

I suspect taxes may be another issue. Toronto also has the issue of having to pay players in US dollars when earning much of their revenue in Canadian.

and you might prefer to stay in the USA

Anyone who is thinking things through would take a pay-cut to live in Ontario these days. If it weren't for the fact I live in literal paradise, I'd be looking for a place in Rosedale right now.

And isn't it high time Vancouver gets a team? I'd cheerfully winter in Vancouver. I need a better exit plan than what I have currently. Unfortunately for me, my other choice is likely to be invaded soon.

MLB wants to add two more teams. Most likely Nashville and Salt Lake. Vancouver is not on the list.

And....Go Dodgers!

A reason the Dodgers were bought by an independent investment group (IMHO) was to counter the threat that a Chinese group would buy out the Dodgers and turn it into a team of the best Chinese baseball players playing in the US major leagues

Magic Johnson was a major force in convincing the other investors to get involved and keep the Dodgers as a SoCal owned team
The investment has turned out well for the group as the value of the team has soared from the investment groups purchase price of 2.15 billion dollars to an estimated value of around 7 billion dollars
