Alaska has offered these codes to anyone. You would log in to your Avis or Budget account and use the code for 35% off. Avis awd code is A080500. Budget bcd code is B035200. We are getting closer to our trips and I just revised our reservations.

For some reason those codes never seem to work for me. I get better rates with Avis by going through Costco. I will check though.

Just checked. Initial rate looked better, but with taxes and fees it's more than the reservation I have with Costco. Also it looks like they want you to pay up front.

Same here. Rates are $700 higher than Costco for our six-week trip.

We have a (1 day, 1 way) Budget reservation for next week that I booked with the discount from the Rentalcarmomma site. I put the Alaska discount code a in a 'new booking' just to see what price I'd get and it is $40 Cndn more than what I booked for. I'll keep our original booking thanks.

I signed into my Avis and Budget account then used the codes. Budget was the rate I went with. There was a box to pre-pay but I left that un-checked and made the new reservation.

I did sign into my Avis account. Rate is still higher than what I have through Costco. And the Costco rates keep going down. We don't like to rent from Budget on Maui.

With both Avis and Budget in Hawaii you can skip going inside. They are both owned by the same company. Their cars in Maui are only separated by a line. Is it the quality of cars in the groups you don't like ? I haven't ever had a new Budget car but I have had very close to new Avis cars many times.

I'm still in the reservation swap phase so eventually I will be checking Costco again. My first Costco reservation was over $1,700 for a suv. Hawaiian Car Rental took that reservations place at about $900 using Thrifty in a full sized car. Now I'm at about $650 for three weeks in a full sized car with Budget.

We are back with Costco for Hawaii this morning.

Not at Lihue. They have an outdoor kiosk but there is often no one there so you need to go inside to get the keys. Nothing as simple as a board with your name and parking spot number so you just go straight to your car. LIH is a small operation and there is no one at the exit to check your DL so it is all done by someone at the kiosk or inside (there is an Avis Preferred line but the whole place gets overwhelmed sometimes).

We were able to skip the inside line at Avis Lihue. We were met outside at the kiosk. I remember thinking the emergency brake was on and pulling a lever before turning out of the parking lot. I pulled the hood latch and had to get out and shut the hood. It was our first hybrid.

That is great. The last time we were there they seemed to be short staffed, no one at the kiosk and everyone waited about 30 minutes to get their car driven right from the car wash.

Kiosk? Two weeks ago there was no kiosk. So many cars were being returned, they obscured the sign telling you where to return the car, and the cul-de-sac loop was being filled. Inside, there's a Fastbreak desk with one overwhelmed employee. She processed me quickly, but then it took 20 minutes to wash and fuel the car before it was delivered to me. "We have plenty of cars, but not enough workers."

I bet it gets worse. Wages compared to the cost of living in Kauai makes it difficult for many workers to stay.

Wow. I thought that was the bottom and things would improve when the car supply improved. That is disheartening indeed. Hawaii is one of the most popular vacation spots in the world and I hope someone (I know the governor has his hands full) starts paying attraction to the infrastructure (staffing a huge priority and a complicated problem) before it falls apart.

I rebooked with Costco today for a week in Kauai in February and saved about $100.00. I was still able to upgrade from an intermediate SUV to a standard size SUV as well. There will be four of us and a standard size will be a better fit. I'm happy, but will keep checking.

We reserved a car today with Discount Hawaii Car Rentals. The price is about $150 less than our last reservation through Costco. I had at least four other reservations and started at about $1700 for a mid sized suv with the first reservation. We are down to just over $600 tonight for a Premium Full sized car for three weeks. I might not check anymore because at $29 a day how could it go any lower.

Bill

I’ve rebooked several times for two weeks in Kauai, and paid ~$530 via Autoslash. This rate is even lower than my corporate Hertz rate (not to mention the overpriced corporate Avis rate). Costco is also more expensive, as is Discount Hawaii Car Rental (at about $625 for the same two weeks). For the time I’m visiting, this is quite reasonable as other options are all much more expensive. Of course, I’ll keep checking!

Out of curiosity, I had Autoslash run another quote today on my two week trip to Kauai. Today the cost is about $65 more than I had paid a week or two ago, and is much more in line with Costco and others though still ~$30 less.

Same here, but did not have to pay up front.

AutoSlash has found cheaper rates than what I have through Costco, but they are either prepay or with companies we don't want to book with.

I have no problem prepaying for a lower rate, and I do. In my experience, Autoslash is reliable and as long as you adhere to the reservation terms it works as expected.

You can cancel a pre-pay. Is there a penalty for canceling ? I think there is with Avis.

I don't care if you can cancel and get a refund. I just don't like to do prepay for car rentals.

I like AutoSlash. Many times they have come up with cheaper rates. But for some reason this time around, for us, Costco has been better. Maybe as it gets closer to the date of the rental AutoSlash will come up with lower rates.
