I don't think any of my friends, and I know none of my family, are on TUG. How could I talk about them if they were. ;)
But anyone who is looking for, at, or purchased a timeshare, that I know about, I refer to TUG, and just did that this the past week. But I won't tell them my screename.:D

Similar points for me. This is my secret getaway website. That's why I don't even post my state of residence. I'm just an anonymous someone 'out there'. Although, from other postings, I have identified another member and will someday introduce myself in person. I don't want to scare her, though, or for her to think she has a stalker.

After 40+ years of T/S ownership, I am no longer "an owner"
I<<snipped>>
At work people roll there eyes when I mention my timeshares. But they look a little sad when I am leaving and say "You're going to Hawaii AGAIN?!" << MoreSnipping>>

Funny how it works that way, isn't it?

I once had a board member tell me that they must pay me too much because of all of the great places I go on vacation. Sad thing is, he too owns a timeshare but only goes there (Orlando) every year. He also bought from the developer so no wonder he's broke!

Different sides of family

On my side of the family nobody would ever step foot into a timeshare because they were all scared away years ago by bad practices and bad people. No reason for any of them on Tug.
On my wife's side she has a brother that owns thru Worldmark and a niece that recently bought into Worldmark. Neither goes on Tug. We talked her brother/sister n law into resale but couldn't convice the niece.
The niece and her susband make so much money that spending it means nothing to them. Between them they make more in a year then I make in 10.

Living in a predominantly retiree community, we know lot of people that own one or more timeshares. I used to tell them about TUG, but to the best of my knowledge, none of them have ever bothered to check TUG out. I seldom bother mentioning TUG to others now.

My neice and her husband bought a timeshare on Hilton Head. I told them about TUG, and my niece joined. They had a terrible experience with their timeshare (Coral Sands), and managed to get rid of it. She hasn't been on TUG much since, but will ask me to check for possible rentals from time to time.

during the course of my day i am in peoples homes doing my carpet or chimney cleaning service i might see something on the table like a RCI or II catalog. That start the convo for me to ask where they own etc.

I was talking to a lady recently after doing some work and her credit card had a picture of mickey mouse on it.. i asked about that and come to find out they are Disney property owners in orlando.. in the midst of talking i mention tug.. she was a tugger as well..

its fun to meet someone that is obsessed with timeshare are you..

for my family on both side they are not really intrested in timeshare it seem so we vacation with out them. :(

my wifes mother has a unit at baroney beach club they bought from devolper a couple year after we were talking about buying timeshare in south Africa.. can not figure for the life of my why they spend a large chunk of change on something they could have gotten for 1/3.. ohwell.. :wall:

I have a work colleague who pays the MFs and uses his mother's timeshare. I told him I bought three TS on ebay and he said "You would buy a TS on Ebay?!". I didn't even bother mentioning TUG.

My parents have two cheap TS (well, not so cheap since they bought from developer, one in 80s and one in 90s I believe). It was actually while planning to use one of their exchanges last year that I learned about TUG. I haven't mentioned TUG to them because they are VERY simple when it comes to TSing, use sometimes, exchange sometimes, let it go idle other times, and dont like spending much time on the internet. They asked me why I bought timeshares when they have two. I made up some response, but didnt tell them the real reason is because their TS are pretty mediocre.

None of my friends, family or DW, would have anything to do with TUG.
It would take up too much of their time.

They say that no group that accepted me as a member could be worth joining.
-- Paraphrasing Woody Allen.

Oh ditto for me. I have sent links for TUG to all my family and friends and they never bother to look. As far as the name goes, there is no secret there as too who I am.

Ive referred lots of people over the years to TUG. Dont know if they even visited the site.

Tug is a unique site. In order to learn, you need to spend some time researching. Most people are lazy and would either have me educate them or not bother timesharing. Some even think I am crazy. Oh well.

Im glad I found this site. YOU ALL ARE GREAT.

Our families and friends do travel but not as much as we do. They travel primarily in Europe. There are Hapimag members in the family but they are not on TUG and not on TripAdvisor. I met some nice fellow travelers through TUG and through TripAdvisor. I even met a few people in person through TripAdvisor while we were traveling. Someone even recognized me once from TripAdvisor in the restaurant of a resort! Lots of fun.

I've told people about it, but don't know of anyone using it.

I'm always careful what I say, just in case some day they find my posts, keeps me honest :)

I sometimes wish I had picked a more annoymous screen name (than childhood nickname).

I found out this past week that a friend at work is an owner at Bonnet Creek and sent her the link for tug. Good timing, as she is going there this week and most likely to a presentation. She is already more informed and I'm guessing will be visiting TUG regularly.

I sure enjoy my time on TUG and consider many of you friends. It is amazing how much we have in common (not only timesharing). Ya'll are a great source for advice or just a great place to vent or share thoughts.

In order to really be a user on TUG you have to meet two criteria; be a TS owner, and be willing to embrace online forums. There are a lot of TS owners out there but very few people actually use or even want to use online forums. There are many TUG members that aren't even signed up for the forums. Spoke with one a couple years ago at Lakeshore Reserve. They were content with using TUG, but had never ventured in to the forums. It takes a certain type of person to embrace online user forums.

Why are people afraid not to tell others about the resale market? Sure the guy will be mad he spent $48 000 but he will know not to buy any in the future. After you tell them then it is up to them to decide.

That's the kind of thing that hurts friendships. It's like telling someone they are dating a clod -they will embrace the clod even more.

If they spent too much, I won't be looked on as very friendly to come along and horrify them by unveiling the waste. It's too late and I can pretty much only cause anger and embarrassment.

I also would remain quiet if it were past recission.

I work with a person who is in a senior capacity and owns a TS his wife bought without his knowledge. Its a TS in the Berkshires so its not a top destination or trader.

I found myself one day discussing with him at lunch my recent trip to Maui and my TS ownership. He had complained about his TS that they really couldn't use it to get anywhere worthwhile and couldn't even sell it. Last thing I wanted to do is shine a spotlight on his weak TS so I didn't go into detail about my nice Marriott TSs or how bad his was so I just told him about the TUG site.

Even though I told him the site would be very helpful I doubt he'd ever do the research to improve his value, he just not the type. Most years he just let's it go unused.

What's that saying...you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink?

I first learned about resales from a gal at work who was constantly going on vacations to nice resorts and owned at Tahoe. So I bought resale and found TUG about the same time. Since then, a few of my friends got resale units, but none joined TUG or even checked it out at my suggestion.

Others who are curious or interested just ask me for help. Just this weekend a friend asked if I'd help his friend get rid of a timeshare.

Yup, my friends and family have sometimes been in collusion to mess with me on tug and other forums. We ( my wife and I ) share accounts such as photobucket and some email accounts with the kids and certain family members. My grand daughter recently join this collusion.

Some examples : On a particular fishing forum my brother in law gave up my favorite secrete fishing hole on a thread I was involved with. He even posted a picture of me pulling out a huge salmon in this hole. The picture clearly shows my gear.

On a stock market forum I was asked knock knock on a comodities thread. It was a buddy messing with me.

On a gun owner forum I was in a discusion about concealable handguns when a poster ask me if I owned a certain type of weapon that I had lent out. He asked where a certain part went as it was left over after he cleaned it. I soon found out that this was another buddy.

I realize that Im a timeshare junky and so does my family. They might think about doing an intervention but that would screw up future vacations they all enjoy. So the best they can do is mess with me.

As far as good friends go, most know who I am at tug but Im not aware of their posts even when they post behind me. I have told many about tug and how to buy a timeshare but have decided to stop as it sometimes upsets people that overpaid. Now I only tell these secretes when asked.

Sometimes family members will check Tug, facebook and recently timeshare forums with their phones to see if Im home and then hurry over.

Bill

No one that I know is on TUG and as far as I know no one knows me and I do not know anyone. Yet, if something comes up I say to my family-wait let me ask on TUG everyone is so nice they might have gone through this already or know about it.

Great people on TUG. Very nice and friendly.
