Yesterday I had a panic call from the gal that took over my church duties about the church laptop. There was Windows 10 update and she clicked the button. Once it was done, she could not open any Microsoft Office files.

I used one of my laptops that also had a pending update to do the same, but made sure that I made a Restore Point first. Sure enough I could not open and Excel, Outlook, or Word files. I just immediately did Restore and my laptop is fine.

So I went over and tried a lot of things, (she had not done a restore in quite a while, so I was our of luck). I could not fix it so I brought it home and hubby reinstalled Office (I had the Activation Code on my saved info sheet). It is up and running. :)

A few minutes ago, I got a call from a friend who said she needed help with her PC - she could not open Excel spreadsheets! :(

So, right now, I am creating a Recovery Drive for the laptop that I updated and Restored yesterday just because. I plan to try the update again.

The laptop that I basically use as a desktop updated this morning with no issues. I am using it now.

Anyone else having issues?

No issues here. I use Office 2016 programs.
What version was she using. It may be time to update.

I also have no issues with the current Win 10 update

I have Office 2013, and after the update, when I went to use Excel, it started the Office installer. Strange, but after the installer was done, Word and Excel worked fine.

Reinstalling could be the key.

Sometimes it seems updates are designed to force the purchase of products.
Several times when Epson installed updates, I had to replace the ink cartridges.

I was surprised you were still using a 16-year old platform. Not surprised you were having issues. Hope they are all resolved now.

I use Office 2016 and have had Windows 10 ever since it came out. One of my laptops is just 1 year old. The one I use for basically a desktop is 5 years old, but has a 1T SSD for the hard drive. Before we bought the church a laptop, everything was on that. My husband was a Systems guy for years and keeps our stuff up to date. He also clones our SSD;s every 3 months for a super backup. If anything crashes, he can plug the backup one in. I use an online backup for data files.

Thanks for the clarification. No offense intended.

Multiz321 - No problem - no offense taken. I love all of your info posts and check them everyday The Windows 10 one today made me feel better about my friends issues. I did find it interesting that my newest laptop had the same problem as they did, but my older one did not. I wanted to know if others had the same issue and how they fixed it.

BTW - new Windows 10 update version is 2004 - that threw me off too when I was doing the update! Some folks had still been using version 1903 and mine had been version 1909

Thanks - I got them up and running. With one, I told her that she might have to use the 365 option, but glad I didn't since you had problems with that. :).

"... version 1903 and mine had been version 1909..."

1st Thought: They didn't have computers back then.
2nd Thought: Was the version numbering Bill Gates' idea?

3rd thought: I suppose that's why they worked.

All this tech stuff is great when it works. The problem is that it doesn't always work, and then it's a PITA. Reminds me of the little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead.

(I'm using 1903 and have no urge to update. I've set Windows Update to postpone updates. And I still use Office 2010. Good luck to the brave souls who do try to update. I used to keep my computer updated many years ago, but now I view my PC mainly as a tool. And I haven't bought a new hammer or screwdriver in many, many years.)

My computer still has Office 2010 and it just upgraded Windows 10 today with no issues. No problems with Office at all.

Which version of Windows 10 do you show after your upgrade? Is it 1903, 1909, or 2004?

Unfortunately the update process for Windows 10 has become a dice roll. I have 10 year old laptops that the nieces and nephews use for viewing videos and play educational DVDs. They update with no glitches since I updated from XP and Vista to Windows 10 5 years ago. Other computers I maintain for friends and family have a spotty record of successful updates. And they include the latest surface computers from Microsoft. My rule has been not to do major updates for at least 2 months after wide release. That means I will not do this latest major update for another 6 weeks. Most issues should be resolved by then and I hope not a lot of support time will be needed. Very irritating when I think about the time and effort I have spent over the years to keep Microsoft based PCs running

I don't trust Microsoft tools to restore anything. I use a free disk imaging tool (Macrium Reflect) to do an automatic backup of my boot drive every week. If Microsoft releases an update that breaks something, I can restore the entire boot partition from the backup. I keep all my data on a 2nd drive which is also backed up automatically every week. With M.2 SSD drives, it's easy to put 2 drives into a laptop, and use the HDD to store the backups.
