How was the airport when you when you left Aruba?
It wasn't too bad, since my wife was using wheelchair assistance they had someone walk us through everything. So we bypassed the longest line which was US Immigration. Though we also had Global Entry, so it would have been quick for us anyway. I noticed that many people found the Global Entry kiosks confusing. They are now 100% biometric. I saw so many people trying to scan their passport or they would start looking at the camera to only look down or look sideways as the machine tried to read their biometrics. There were no real instructions on the screen to indicate just to look at the camera. Nothing more is needed. I guess if you use it often enough no explanation is necessary, but some were just using it for the first time or were just using it for the first time since they went 100% biometric.

The biggest issue with the airport is seating. There isn't enough seats at the gate area for everyone on a flight and many people get to the gate very early. The few restaurants are very expensive, even by airport standards. Two large fountain sodas was $15. I paid it because I was thirsty, but gawd. They do have vending machines but they only take cash and none of the shops sell beverages of any kind. Certainly first world issues...

Good insights, thank you. How odd that none of the shops sell beverages, hmm. Good to keep in mind.

i agree with what Jeremy had to say….I will add that there were only 3 immigration officers to process thousands of people leaving Aruba…there were 4 stations with no immigration officer, slow and very very congested…next time we will leave for the airport first thing in the morning.

We were last at Marriott's Aruba Surf Club in 2018, pre-pandemic. When we got to the airport we weren't really sure we would make it as we failed to complete the Aruba ED Card online. Easy enough, we did it from our phone about 5 hours before arrival. No one checked for it and when we got to Aruba they said it was tied to our passport number, so they didn't even want the QR code.

As for the resort, everything seems to be in top condition. I had heard some complaints about the rooms seeming to ba little tired, but that isn't our experience. We are in a third floor Spyglass 2BR. No view, but we don't hang out on the balcony even when we have the best views. In our case, a good view is just good for the videos. One thing we noticed about Spyglass is that there is no AC in the hallway. The elevator corridor is air conditioned, but the hallways are HOT. They also turn off the AC near the elevators in the evening and overnight.

The wind seems to be pretty heavy this week, but perhaps that is just me forgetting how bad it usually is. I know Aruba has tradewinds, but there are some bad wind tunnel areas around the resort. The lazy river is great and it doesn't seem overly crowded. I didn't remember there being a beach bar (Flip Flops), is that relatively new? I also noticed those spray sunscreen machines have been removed. Reserving a Palapa was easy online, but they do get booked fast. A few do open up sometime after 10am due to no shows. So if you don't get one, check back in. I noticed that they didn't release them right at 10am.

As for groceries. This time we went to Ling & Sons IGA. Just happened to be driving by it. The last time we went there many years ago I remember it being kinda worn out and run down. We were actually quite surprised, it looks like they have done a full renovation and it was a much more pleasurable shopping experience than Super Food which is always crammed with people and very busy. We will be going back to Ling and Sons IGA on future trips. Mainly to avoid the mayhem at Super Food. If you go to Ling & Sons, also sign up for their club and tell them you are a timeshare owner at checkout for 5% off.

We haven't eat or drank anything from any of the onsite restaurants at the Surf Club but did go to the new Campeones at the Ocean Club. This used to be Champions but that closed and it was converted to a Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant. We were quite surprised as it was fairly good. They have a chips and salsa bar (tortilla chips, pico de gallo, sour cream, salsa verde and another salsa) which is included. The salsa bar however it was often out of most items. We asked for them to refill some and they did, but they never brought out more sour cream. The restaurant seemed fairly busy and we got there around 9pm (open 5pm-9pm). The main issue we had though was that they seemed like they were trying to close the place while we were there. The lack of them replenishing the salsa bar to being told there weren't any tables when they had several empty ones that couldn't be used because that section was already closed for the night. It seemed strange.

If anyone has any other questions about the property, let me know and I will try to answer them.
Everyone is saying they are excited for your YouTube video. What name are you under on YouTube so we can check it out?

Wow, that seems crazy. How many hours before a flight would you recommend getting there?

The hotel recommended three hours and I would say that was probably about right. We got to the gate much earlier due to our escort through everything but there were already very few seats left to sit.

Hi…it’s a 20 minute drive from the Marriots to the airport…the luggage check to get your boarding pass and check your bags was mayhem..there weren’t enough machines to get your luggage tags, for the amount of travelers, and the associates that tried to help, imo, we’re not trained properly so it took a half hour to get through the line…..and like I said in another post…there were 7 immigration stations and only 3 stations open to process people departing Aruba…We travelled on A/A which was one of the last gates in the airport terminal..very long walk…We did. have seating at the gate…We arrived at the gate an hour and 15 minutes before departure…we departed on a Friday afternoon..We love Aruba and will be returning next year to the Ocean Club

We always leave about 3.5 hours before our flight to get to the airport. You do need to allow 3 hours at the airport and that should also allow you a little time to buy an overpiced sandwich and beverage before your flight after going through the process. The problem is you have to go through the local Aruba customs and passport control and then go through the process over again with US Customs, so you are literally checking your bags, going through Aruba customs, picking up your bags again and then going through US Customs before checking your bags again for your US flight. The overall process saves time when you land in the US as you go straight to baggage claim like any other domestic flight, but it is a tedious and time consuming exercise at the Aruba airport. In a lot of other places, the day of aggravation might make me think twice about going there but Aruba is such a great place it just becomes part of the experience.

We also flew AA, I noticed that for us we couldn't check in at the kiosks as as soon as you selected AA it said "checkin without bags". Well had bags and had to go to the counter. There was no real line at the time for AA for some reason.

You also have to go through security twice, why I don't know. Have then run your bags through Aruba security, take shoes off put them back on and then do it all again for TSA security. I don't get it. There is also no Pre-Check in Aruba, so you have to take shoes off for TSA and also remove laptops. What a pain. I don't understand why there is Aruba security, I guess because all passengers go through the same set of doors? I don't know why they can't divert US bound passengers after Aruba passport control directly to the baggage pickup before USA Immigration and customs.

Hey Jeremy. What are your thoughts of the surf club after 5 years? Any good restaurants this time?

We aren't foodies (though we do like to eat) but we aren't adventurous eaters (or at least DW isn't). So we aren't the best to provide local restaurant recommendations.

We also had to go to the counter....and there was a line...honestly....the worse part was there were only 3 immigration officers to process many many people departing Aruba...that took about 35-40 minutes crawling along in a long winding line.

I would highly suggest Global Entry. Many credit cards will cover the cost. There were only two people in front of us in the GE line. It seemed to have it's own dedicated officer.

Agree. GE certainly speeds up the process.

The trick is finding a processing center.
In Maine there is only one and it is in Calais- right on the Canadian border.
Almost 4 hour drive from Portland, 3 hours for me.
Open Tuesday- Thursday 8-4 so a day off from work.
Although there are none at all in NH and for all of MA the only place is Logan.
Wish it was easier we would do it for sure.

You can do enrollment on arrival at several airports. Just have to get approved first and then next time you return to the US do the interview as part of your arrival back in the US.

Here in California, there are only a few processing centers and they are all booked for months and months. Appointments in Southern CA are very hard to come by. I was lucky enough to have my interview locally (40 miles away, literally right on the Mexican border) back in November 2019 by *only* booking four months in advance.

But when DW applied, it was right before the pandemic started and everything shut down. She finally just had her interview two weeks ago...by driving 7 hours to the border station in Nogales, AZ (and 7 hours back). Her card arrived in the mail just a few days ago.

Does the lazy river have a stronger current than Lakeshore Reserve? We were at Lakeshore in April. I had been looking forward to the lazy river, but I was quite disappointed in how slow / weak it was. The Grand Mayan lazy river is one that we thoroughly enjoyed.
