Approximately 2 months ago, there was a thread about a new AA promotion to get quick elite status with AA. I can't find the thread to reference. The thread included a link to flyertalk, with instructions to sign up for the promotion. The promotion required that you fly 10,000 miles in 3 months to become Platinum elite. Just like the normal platinum challenge, but without paying.

Anyway, over the past month, I've taken 2 trips from JFK to San Francisco on AA. That netted me about 11,000 miles. I checked for the status change each day, but didn't see it, so called AAdvantage customer service tonight. I was told that I am not eligible, even though I received an email after signing up that said I was enrolled. They said, anytime a program like that comes out, the only people that can actually take part are the people that received the initial email from AA. Those people would have a special code in their account to enable the program.

So I'm a little bummed, but oh well. Thought I'd let others know in case you signed up expecting to go on some trips to get status.

The other thing to keep in mind about AA's challenge is that it's based on EQP (Elite Qualifying POINTS), not miles. Many of the cheaper fares only earn 0.5 EQP per mile.

do US trial, with quick status, then match to AA

DL has also been doing elite bonuses with american express etc
and can earn via credit card spend

UA also has earn via credit card spend IIRC

and maybe a few others

flyertalk discussion probably covered all the details eventually?

AA does not provide status matches. They will provide status via a Challenge where you must fly a certain number of miles within a certain time. There is a charge to do a challenge.

From what I've read, AA does do some status matches, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Old thread, but closest I could find to the topic

AA Elite Challenge update 5/13/2022: The program which grants an upgrade to either Gold or Platinum Status (requiring both Miles and $$ within a 90-day period) through the end of the year currently is suspended but may be returning in mid-2022. This is per a discussion I had with AA Gold Desk this morning. Bummer because I was hoping to use my current trip to MKO to fast track to Platinum. Not-so-bummer because, well, I'm starting my 2 weeks at KOBC today!
