Approximately 2 months ago, there was a thread about a new AA promotion to get quick elite status with AA. I can't find the thread to reference. The thread included a link to flyertalk, with instructions to sign up for the promotion. The promotion required that you fly 10,000 miles in 3 months to become Platinum elite. Just like the normal platinum challenge, but without paying.
Anyway, over the past month, I've taken 2 trips from JFK to San Francisco on AA. That netted me about 11,000 miles. I checked for the status change each day, but didn't see it, so called AAdvantage customer service tonight. I was told that I am not eligible, even though I received an email after signing up that said I was enrolled. They said, anytime a program like that comes out, the only people that can actually take part are the people that received the initial email from AA. Those people would have a special code in their account to enable the program.
So I'm a little bummed, but oh well. Thought I'd let others know in case you signed up expecting to go on some trips to get status.
