My ex-brother in law invented the equipment used to remove contaminated soil out of the ground. I wonder if you know Chuck J ?

I haven't done site cleanup work for almost 30 years. I was involved in some of the very earliest work in that area; I was on the state technical review team for the work at Occidental Chemical in Lathrop, CA, which, along with Aerojet General in Rancho Cordova and Fairchild Semiconductor in south San Jose, were the first big remediation projects in California. About that time, while I was still working for the CA Health Department, I adapted the hollow stem auger split barrel sampling technique for doing subsurface investigations. For a long time that because the standard approach for sampling.

Most of the sites I was involved with we tried to not remove soil unless it was highly contaminated. In most cases, you create more hazards by bringing the materials to the surface and either managing them on the ground surface or putting them in trucks and hauling the material on the road.

Chuck invented an air sparging process that pumps air into the ground to bring contaminates to the surface back in the 80's. It was a soil vapor pump I think. They would enclose the area over the soil and capture he vapors. This type of equipment was originally used to clean up rail road contamination.

What were you finding in your samples ? It almost sounds like it could be a number of contaminates.

Mostly chlorinated solvents, pesticides, and PCBs.

I don't know if you have ever noticed, but the salespeople almost always "used to live" or have a daughter/son that "lives" close to where you live! It's 100% for us. Even on Maui, the gal talked about how she "used to live" in Aurora, less than 12 miles from our house. I guess they really pay attention to the home address on that DL, huh?
I was wondering that too. Always some kind of rapport building strategy. It's kinda funny to watch. They also don't really listen to you, once they think they have you "pegged."
