[ 2023 ] Dishwasher issue

From your description it sounds like it might be time to replace the dishwasher. We have had a few GE dishwashers and found that they didn't clean very well and it sounded like a tank when they ran. Our Bosch cleans much much better, is reliable, and is quiet.

I did a Google search on electric "code" and found: "Kitchen dishwashers installed in dwelling units require GFCI protection whether hard wired or cord and plug connected". So, perhaps there is a GFCI protector built into the plug. Or perhaps your house was not built to code. I think that GFCI's were required in the 2014 NEC code.

I had wondered if the "breaker" that your husband had been resetting (in the main house panel?) was actually a GFCI breaker. You can tell the difference because there will be a test button on the breaker. If after the dishwasher was plugged into another kitchen circuit receptacle, it is likely that you plugged it into a GFCI receptacle. GFCI's are required in kitchens, bathrooms, etc. If it stopped working on the cord plugged in to another kitchen receptacle, it would be wise to double check that that when the d.w. stops working that the receptacle is still energized, by plugging in a night light or something.

But, maybe it is time to "throw in the towel" and get a new dishwasher.
Btw, second the Bosch. Ours is about 15 years old +/- and it is hands down, the best dishwasher that we have ever owned. The racking system is amazing - it holds so many dishes. When (if) it ever dies, I will just replace it with another Bosch.

I never use the dry button. When the dishes are done I just open the door a little bit and they air dry in no time. Save money on the electricity bill.

That's what we were doing. The problem was the cups catching a bit of water that would spill out on the other things in the dishwasher. Especially the coffee mugs.

I never put plastic (Tupperware) in the dishwasher. I guess Mom never did so I don’t.

I have that problem too. The bottom of my coffee mugs are not flat and hold a bit of water.

The salesperson also told me that most manufacturers are going to a three rack system.

UPDATE: All I can say is we are still using the dishwasher as is. For a while we had to reset the breaker only occasionally. Lately we are on a roll with it working every time!

We really think it's some quirky thing in the circuit board. But what the heck? It's broke, but it works anyway so why fix what ain't broke? LOL! :whooopie:

Along those lines...
Ever since LG replaced the compressor & dryer unit in our fridge last November, it's made an low, intermittent rattle (like a moose in heat). The repair guy said he can't diagnose it, unless it does it for him. <SIGH> . For now, we'll just live it.

Today is April 23, 2025 and we are still using this dishwasher. Sometimes it goes for like 2 weeks with no issues. And then sometimes it won't come on so we have to flick the breaker off and on. Sometimes we have to leave the breaker off for an hour or two. But then when we turn the breaker back on the dishwasher will come on when we press the start button! And usually will at the least work a few more times or up to 2 weeks or so until we go through this whole cycle again. LOL!

I refuse to get rid of a 5 year old dishwasher. So we are continuing to live with it.:D

My son bought all new LG kitchen appliances from Lowes. The refrigerator started making a noises off the get go so a repair guy came out. The repair guy said the noises were normal noises for the LG but decided to repair it. The repair didn't work so Lowes exchanged it. After a year the new fridge started making a clicking noise. The repair guy changed a valve and that seemed to have worked for a while until the compressor stopped working. The repair guy replaced the compressor and some other things. I think he has a couple of years of warranty left and I thought he should sell it while it's working.

We replaced our LG stove with a Frigidaire, and now
we're looking for an excuse to dispose of the LG fridge.
But strangely, we still like our LG dishwasher... very quiet.

Interesting, we have had nothing but good luck with our LG washer/dryer and Fridge. Our Bosch dishwasher has been great, yes it takes a while for a full cycle, but it does a great job and we usually run it on delay overnight after dinner, so the longer cycle does not bother me much.

When we remodeled the kitchen in our former home I replaced our GE/Hotpoint dishwasher we had for like 25 years that was still going strong with a Bosch. Really liked the Bosch.

My experience with GE dishwashers is that they don't clean all that well, they didn't last all that long and they sounded like a tank when running.

My wife loved her Bosch. Cleaned well, very quiet, and reliable. Right now we have a Fisher-Paykel washer (it was here when we moved in). It is super quiet but the controls are kind of quirky.

Just chiming in because i like complaining about appliances. We've replaced 3 GE dishwashers. The last one needed a new control panel within a year and was still under warranty. It got replaced with home remodel. We bought a Bosch 800 which messages me when it's done and pops the door open to dry. All sounds cool but dishes often don't get clean. The latest remodel includes the top of the line Miele. It better work!

I’ll just say that in September we installed a new set of GE Profile appliances, and the dishwasher is fantastic. We truly don’t have to rinse off anything, and everything comes out spotless, including baking dishes, pans, etc. It is a top end model, quite quiet but not as silent as our Kitchenaid in our other house.

Maybe the higher end model makes a difference. The ones we had were low-end developer models.

We unfortunately, had to get a new dishwasher (Bosch), new W&D (LG), new fridge last week (GE Profile), new furnace and air (Lennox) all in the last 15 months😢. Financially a bummer😫
Why? What happened? That’s crazy!

Silver lining: Those appliances will cost a lot more later this year.

I have aging appliances and a built in fridge that I hope will last at least a few more years

One of the good things about living in an area full of gazillionaires is that the highest of high-end appliances pop up on Facebook marketplace all the time. Billionaires completely renovating their new multi-million dollar house, and throwing out perfectly-good $10,000 refrigerators to replace with a different model of $10,000 refrigerator.

The Kitchenaid built in we have cost $10K new. "You can have it if you'll remove it from the house and haul it away." Same guy was tossing 60" Thermador range which costs even more. Took that, too. He kept the Wascomat commercial washer, though. I could have picked up a dishwasher, but I currently have no spot to put it. So I left that.

For what it's worth, I have now met someone who literally lives in a glass house. The house was almost entirely window.

My built-in monogram cost about $4000 when installed 22 years ago. It costs $10k now and ??? after tariffs to replace. I have paid for service on this unit which has more than paid for itself because it has been practically rebuilt including the entire ice maker system and hoses.

The GE repairman said fridge should last 25 years. When that goes, I am going to remodel that part of the kitchen because we will also replace the oven and microwave. The cabinet won't fit any built in microwaves offered today so we have kept ours running even though it has issues until we can replace that entire wall of cabinets. That will be an expensive day. Maybe I will look on FB for used ones.
