[2020] A little stock market sense

Every time I hear something like think long stay strong it reminds me of the people near or in retirement in 2008 that said I'm in it for the long run and it will be back. Meanwhile their retirement account was busted and some went back to work at low paying jobs.

Bill

But were those people near retirement that were "busted" really invested in stock index funds for the long term - say 30 years prior to 2008 ?

I "heard" some people near retirement in 2008 had to eat cat food in the recession ............... ;)

.

is this the 2026 recession ?

I am still working. No plans to retire anytime soon. Every week I place a chunk of cash into my 401k.
Dollar cost averaging is my friend during this down draft.

Heck... IDK? I just made that up (Think Long-- Stay Strong) . It just rhymed so I typed it.
However I can see how others may have said the same thing.

Yes they did and they had no one to blame but themselves. They were 100% invested in the market when they should not have been. They got greedy. 2007 was a up year. 2008 was a down year. 2009 was a up year.

If they were not 100% invested, they would have been alright. Not only were they 100% invested in the stock market, but they also were100% invested in their company's stock.

I knew several of them. One had all his stock in Bear Sterns and had no clue his company was on the verge of collapse until I told him. Same with another who worked at Lehman. We all went to the same gym and they had no clue. When I told them, they rushed downstairs to the computer at the gym to check and found out I was correct.

In 2007-08, most of the people I know, including me, owned some Washington Mutual and ended up with maybe 5 cents a share when it was all said and done. It could happen again, especially in these interesting but odd days, even with a plunge protection team, that may or may not be working. It took over five years for some investors to recover the 2008 crash.
Others longer. You are right in that if a person rode through the turmoil back then they would have had considerable gains holding until last week and even now.

I've had Dinty Moore Stew which resembles chunky pet food. It taste pretty good on a cold day camping.

Sounds like part of a country music song, lol. Maybe even a Snoop Dog song about a long strong blunt, lol.

If you are balanced 50/50 on a retirement portfolio of $2 mill, a 10% drop like we experienced last week is $100,000 of your life's savings. Still significant and still hurts.

5 - 10 years to recover is not good for people in retirement or close to it.

At least you won't be eating cat food...but you will reduce discretionary spend. Some retirement.

Teaser and Geezer, Strong and Long

(Verse 1)
Out on the road, where the stories unfold,
A teaser and a geezer, both bold as gold.
One’s got the charm, the other’s got the years,
Together they’re a duo that conquers all fears.

(Pre-Chorus)
Oh, they’re wild and free, like a rolling song,
Teaser and geezer, strong and long.

(Chorus)
Teaser and geezer, they’re out to prove,
Life’s an adventure with every move.
Strong in spirit, long in stride,
They light up the world when they collide.

(Verse 2)
The teaser’s quick with a wink and a grin,
The geezer’s wise with the tales within.
They dance through life like a rhythm divine,
Two souls united by fate’s design.

(Pre-Chorus)
Oh, they’re wild and free, like a rolling song,
Teaser and geezer, strong and long.

(Chorus)
Teaser and geezer, they’re out to prove,
Life’s an adventure with every move.
Strong in spirit, long in stride,
They light up the world when they collide.

(Bridge)
Through the highs and lows, they never fade away,
They’re the spark of life on a brand-new day.
With laughter loud and hearts so strong,
They keep marching forward all night long.

(Final Chorus)
Teaser and geezer, they’ve got it right,
Living their dreams under moonlit nights.
Strong in spirit, long in stride,
Forever together on this wild ride.

(Outro)
Oh yeah! Teaser and geezer… strong and long!

congrats...you killed it.
