Brokenwood Mysteries is on Acorn as well. Lots of good shows there from Ireland, England Australia and New Zealand and probably more.
Big plus for The Diplomat and the NIght Agent (Netflix).Bumping this thread because it's so interesting. I will add a few recent series we've really enjoyed:
At the top of our all-time list, we would include Foyle's War; Bosch; All Creatures Great & Small; and The Night Manager. All of these are outstanding.
- The Widow starring Kate Beckinsale (Amazon Prime)
- The Night Agent (Netflix)
- The Diplomat starring Keri Russell (Netflix)
- The Recruit (Netflix)
- The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)
- Jack Ryan (Amazon Prime)
- Brokenwood Mysteries (Britbox)
- Laurel Canyon (Amazon Prime)
- Line Of Duty (Britbox)
You'll begin to love the quirky characters--not just in the police department, but in the town of Brokenwood as well. Very fun.Just started watching Brokenwood Mysteries. It's available on Amazon Prime. Wasn't sure about it at first but, it's growing on me after 5 episodes.
Then you haven't seen Bosch, The Crown, The Night Manager, The Lincoln Lawyer, Line Of Duty, Reacher--or any of the superb documentaries like My Octopus Teacher, Flight Of The Butterflies, Laurel Canyon, or Chef's Table, to name just a few.Compared to HBO, FX, and Apple series, I haven't found near as many excellent series on Amazon and Netflix. Netflix in particular seems to favor quantity over quality. The writing appears to be particularly lacking.
I loved Ozark on Netflix and Patriot on Amazon, but have found nothing to compare to The Sopranos, Succession, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Severance, and Ted Lasso.
Or, perhaps, you just have different tastes. Of those you listed, I would only watch Laurel Canyon and Chef’s Table. I like comedy, rom-coms, sports and music. I hate documentaries, anything about the royal family, cop shows, horror and pretty much anything that would stir anger or hatred. I promise you, if I did watch something like that, I wouldn’t like it. We all like different things, and that’s okay. Then you haven't seen Bosch, The Crown, The Night Manager, The Lincoln Lawyer, Line Of Duty, Reacher--or any of the superb documentaries like My Octopus Teacher, Flight Of The Butterflies, Laurel Canyon, or Chef's Table, to name just a few.
That's fair. Just making conversation. To each his own.Or, perhaps, you just have different tastes. Of those you listed, I would only watch Laurel Canyon and Chef’s Table. I've been waiting for Mrs. Maisel to return.. Just watched Episode 1 of Season 5 (final season)On Prime a few to recommend
The Outlaws- A British dramedy about people from all walks of life performing community service. The added presence of Christopher Walken helps it along.
Loudermilk- A published rock music critic who hit bottom runs a recovery group of misfits. Creator Peter Farrelly can go over the top raunchy at times but there are some really funny episodes.
The Marvelous Ms. Maisel. Getting to the end of the run but still has it's moments.
If you want something way off the wall and want to practice your Spanish, watch La Usupadora. They took A classic telenovela and reworked it into a 25, 1 hour episode series. Suppose Jill Biden or Melania Trump want to bail out of a marriage to the president. Well one way to do it is to find your long lost twin sister and threaten to kill your biological mother unless your sister takes your place as a stand in wife at the white house. What could go wrong? The absurdity of it makes it fun.
During the pandemic I discovered a lot of the New Zealand dramedies. They show up on Prime, Acorn or Roku.
Step Dave- a one night stand between a young bartender and a woman who is in her later 30's turns into chaotic relationship drama.
800 words - Widowed father moves two kids to small beach town. It's another relationship drama at it's best is very funny and touching.
Going further back in time is Outrageous Fortune. Kind of like a New Zealand Shameless but a little less rank, at least for the first few years.
Thumbs up to New Zealand Television writers.
We watch this show with our grandkids. It's amazing what those contestants do with cake.Stumbled on to “Is It Cake?” on Netflix last week. Cute baking show with two seasons thus far where contestants try to fool judges who have to figure out which realistic object (shoe, basket, statue, steak dinner etc) is cake from amid real objects. They have some really talented bakers and the insides of the cakes look marvelous (I’m a fan of frosting, and everyone gives me their birthday cake roses, but I’d pass on the fondant outer shells on the competition cakes).
I loved Happy Valley. I too had a hard time with the accents but used CC which really really helped.Someone also recommended "Happy Valley" to us, but the actors' northern British accents were so strong we had too much trouble understanding and gave up.
