MACOUN, hands down, is my favorite variety. I believe Macoun is a "hybrid" between Macintosh and another variety whose name I can't recall (and which also does not appear in the above graphic)...

Agree - Macoun. No question. Cross between a Macintosh and Cortland. But hard to get out in "apple country" of WA state. I need to travel back home to New England to get them.

Didn't know that the Honeycrisp Apple was created by a Cross with Macoun Apple and Honeygold Apple at the University of Minnesota.


I love apples in general. Learned so much from this thread. Lots of apple varieties that I was unaware of.

I just ate the most delicious apple!

My husband brought home a variety of apple that I have never seen before it is very similar in appearance to a golden delicious, but crisper. Still full of great apple flavor. It is called an "Opal." It is my new favorite. This is what I found when I googled it.

A trivial clarification...

I learned recently (directly from a Northeast apple orchard owner / grower) that my favorite apple variety (Macoun) is a hybrid (reportedly first developed in the early 1930's) between Macintosh and "Jersey Black". I've never seen or heard of that "Jersey Black" variety myself, but I'm certainly no apple expert.

It was reported in post #31 above that Macoun is a hybrid between Macintosh and Cortland. That statement is evidently incorrect (...not that it matters; Macoun is my favorite, regardless of its' genetic heritage).

We tried a new variety, called Sweetango, while in Door County, WI this fall. It has become my absolute favorite apple.

We were in Maine a couple of years ago and had Macouns. It was almost enough to make me move to Maine(along with the fact that my daughter's family is there). I haven't found them here.

I also like the Jazz, but the Gala is less expensive so is the I buy most.

I buy fruit for my office, as a part of the health and wellness program. I usually buy 60 apples (three varieties,) bananas, pears and some type of citrus. I buy a lot of apples are so economical. My local Sprouts is convinced that I eat a lot of fruit and that my favorite is apples.
