[ 2012 ] What's Your Favorite Variety of Apple?

I like Honey Crisp and my DD's both love Pink Ladys. I didn't realise they are on the tart side. I like way Honey Crisps crunch but kind of melt in your mouth. We grafted some on our apple trees. Well, I think they survived the bear attacking our tree!!
 
Honey Crisp are my favourite too. I like apples, endure them throughout the year even when they've obviously been sitting for months, as an apple a day really can help keep the doctor away. But in the fall when they're fresh, I'll eat two or even three a day!! We usually make a run to fruit country here in B.C. and pick up a case or two of apples that have been picked that day.
 
My favorite is not even ON the graphic...

MACOUN, hands down, is my favorite variety. I believe Macoun is a "hybrid" between Macintosh and another variety whose name I can't recall (and which also does not appear in the above graphic)... :shrug:
 
The chart is by no means complete.

My fav is Ambrosia - sweeter than Fuji :p

This chart is so interesting --- it turns out that the apples that I like best (that I can get here) for eating are consecutive on the first chart ---Gala, Jonagold and Cameo.

My favorite apple is Ida Red --- but I have only been able to find them when visiting Oregon. I never see them here.

I don't like the Gala or Cameo for baking, but I have gotten good reasults with the Jonagold, especially when mixed with Braeburns and Granny Smiths.

I like the Braeburns for eating as well as baking.

Love the Honeycrisp !!!

University of MN has two newer varieties that will be just as popular as the Honey Crisp.... They are Zestar and Sweetango

Fuji and Gala are my faves. DH likes Red Delicious but I think they're too mealy.

Many of those on there; I think the most important thing is if they are super-fresh and crisp. Some hold up to storage better than others.

We used to live near the Cornell orchards, which had so many kinds. They had barrels or baskets for the slightly imperfects of each variety, and you were allowed one per kind for sampling. I'd have two apples in each hand. At that time, my fav was Empire, but lately it's been Gala.

I'm with Theo.......Macoun! It doesn't get any better for me. Crisp, juicy and sweet with a wee bit of smack.

There are so many. I have a few favorites.
 
My uncle's

One of my parent's friends came back from Ukraine over 40 years ago and brought back some apple twigs. They were grafted onto crabapple tree stock ( the only way for apples to survive our cold Canadian winters on the prairies. They are a little more tart than Mcintosh because of the crabapple influence but they are wonderful. My parents and their friends are all gone now but whenever I pick an apple off the tree I remember how my uncle and dad grafted all these trees. I think there must be over 100 of these trees in Edmonton and all are slightly different depending on the root stock. My son has one and his apples are nicer than mine. :D
 
Braeburn and Granny Smith for eating, and Northern Spy for pies.
 
When we bought our old house, we inherited a couple of 'Arkansas Black' apple trees. Smallish, dark red apples that eat well out of hand. I think the birds get a lot more of them than we do.

I'm usually a Fuji guy if I'm buying them.

Pink Lady. Sadly, we are getting to the end of this years crop here in So Cal.

It's a long time til August when we get the new apples.
