I have to bake an apple pie for Christmas. I've never made one. The request is for an apple crumb or something without a top crust. Is it better to use apples instead of canned? What kind of apples? I will buy the crust that you unroll. I have walnuts on hand too so I can always add those. Needs to be simple. TIA.

I like Granny Smith apples for pies - fresh apples have a much better flavor than canned. Here is an easy recipe:

Apple Crumble Pie

1 prepared pie crust, uncooked

filling-
6 c. Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
3 T. lemon juice
1/2 c. sugar
2 T. all-purpose flour

topping-
1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 t. ground cinnamon
1/2 t. ground ginger
1/4 c. real butter - cold

Line pie pan with the uncooked pie crust - do not stretch the dough, ease it into the pan.

Sprinkle apple slices with lemon juice.
Stir together 1/2 c. sugar and 2 T. flour, and toss with apple slices.
Fill pie pan with apple mixture - apples will be higher than the rim of the pan.

Preheat oven to 375º.
Stir together flour, cinnamon, and ginger. Cut in butter until crumbly.
Sprinkle apple filling with topping mixture.
(You could add finely chopped walnuts here if you want to.)
Cover pie lightly with foil and place on a cookie sheet in case it bubbles over.
Bake for 30 min., covered with foil.
Remove foil and bake 30 min. more, or until crust is golden brown.

Marie Callendar's. Either buy one at the restaurant or from the freezer section in your grocery store.

If you insist on DIY, real apples are better than those canned things--which tend to be more syrup filling than apples.

Here is a recipe I like:

6 cups peeled sliced apples
1/2 tsp (or more, I like more) ground cinnamon
1/4 cup orange juice (I slice the apples into the orange juice to keep them from browning)
3/4 sifted, all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar (I like dark as it has more flavor)
1/3 cup butter (NOT margarine--yuck!)

I do not use a bottom crust but you could if you want. I slice the apples into the OJ/cinnamon mixture and then arrange them in a square baking dish--you could use a pie pan or whatever they fit in. I mix the flour and sugar and cut in the butter until it resembles corn meal and then spread that over the apples. Bake at 350 for 30 to 40 minutes.

I am not exact with my measurements. I've doubled this recipe as well. the brown sugar gives it a caramel-ly taste that I love.

Pat,
I'd do Betty Crocker's Impossibly Easy French Apple Crumb Pie. You don't even need a pie crust, you use bisquick. I've made a few of their Impossibly Easy recipes, and they are easy and turn out well. They have a taco pie and a crab pie (two separate things) that are killer for lunch or dinner.

If that isn't what you want, search Betty Crocker for other recipes, but that is about the easiest.

You want to use fresh apples. Granny Smith apples work well, and you might want to add one red one such as Braeburn or Gala if you have them where you are.

Good luck!

I'm with Rose Pink. Marie Callendar's. You can't lose.

I agree - much better with fresh apples than a canned filling. I use Cortland apples because an orchard owner told me that's what they use at their house. I recently used Granny Smith for an apple crisp and it was delicious too.

Apple Crisps have no crust and have a nice topping. That's what I prefer to make so I don't need to roll out a crust.

Wow, thanks for all the quick suggestions. They all sound yummy. Now I have to decide which one!

If you choose to make your own, buy the Pillsbury rolled pie crusts that you get in the refrigerator section. They are close to homemade. You put them in your own pie pan and press the edges with a fork or pinch, so it shows more effort!!! I have had many compliments on my pie crust and have been using these for years!

It is kind of like putting extra crispy KFC in your own glass dish and taking to a pot-luck!!! :)

Those are the pie crusts that I use for other pies so I know they are good.
