I remember reading an investigative report that such mail order degrees have often been used by Government employees for advancement in GS ratings. I'm sure that's only a small percentage of the users, but it was really annoying to learn most kept their jobs even after it was learned the credentials were bogus.

I don't know for sure that any of my fellow bureaucrats ever pulled bogus degrees, although I assume that as a group bureaucrats are as prone to chicanery as any other bunch.

I do know that the ones who made a point of wearing their PhDs on their sleeves, being sure that everybody knew about their exalted academic status, tended to be the same ones who used their doctorates as Stupidity Licenses. That is, they'd insist on being addressed by the title Doctor and in a typical day they would utter some piece of inanity, early & often, in a manner that proclaimed I Am A Pee Aitch Dee And So Therefore Everything I Say Is By Definition Intelligent -- And By The Way I Am Smarter Than You, So There.

Unsurprisingly, those types were well represented on the the "turkey farms" -- make-work units populated with unproductive civil service doofuses. (Don't get me started.)

By contrast, it often was the case that some superlative top-drawer manager or specialist or administrator I worked with would turn out to have an advanced degree, a fact that remained unremarked & in the background for a long time until I got well acquainted with that person. That is, not only was academic achievement genuine among those people, but it was just 1 aspect of their all-round high degree of competence. Go figure.

Full Disclosure : Bachelor Of Arts (1964, English) was as far as I went in academia -- & lucky to get that far in only 4 years + 2 summer sessions. So it goes.

Sadly, I've had some college students - just a few - whose writing isn't much better. And no, I'm not kidding.

Big scandal in NJ now, on school Superintendents who have been getting advanced degrees (and higher pay) from "diploma mills" Not to get political, but,
having lived in NJ for 30 years, corruption breeds corruption.

Alan,

I suppose it's why people in my part of the country say Kitty-Corner and those in other areas say Katty-Corner :)

By the way I really enjoy reading your posts, especially those in the Lounge where it's okay to get off topic:clap:

Are the Superintendent's being fired, or suspended with pay for several months.

Nice of you to say. Thanks.

Fortunately, it's not all that much trouble to hijack some of the non-Lounge BBS discussions & take those way off topic too -- not that there's anything wrong with hijacking TUG-BBS discussion topics.

I used to work for a major company and we were looking for a manager of a department. A resume crosses my desk and the VP of HR is really hot on this guy. I checked his college degrees and found out one was a pure and simple diploma mill and the other required some course work but most "credit" was based on your life history.

I told the HR guy what I'd found and he asked me what we should do. I told him I didn't want to even bring the guy in for an interview. They decided to bring him in for an interview anyway. In the meantime, I called the place where he got his master's degree and I found out that I could get a Ph.D., working about 6 hours a week within 6 months to a year. Although I wouldn't have actually gone through with it, I was prepared to announce that I wanted the company to pay my tuition and then honor my degree when I "earned" it, if they hired this guy. Luckily not one person liked him at all so it never came to pass. In my research, I found that some state governments actually had policies and would not hire anyone with "degrees" from this one place.
