Buying a vehicle

We still have collision coverage on our 2013 and 2016 SUV's. LOl! Our insurance on both is under $1000 annually total.

I see lots of posts in other forums of people commenting on their auto insurance cost. It's rather meaningless to others without context such as location and coverage amounts.

My policy has increased this year so earlier this month I switched to a different carrier for a better rate, and it's still too much - 13 years with the same company doesn't really help other than momentum. When I quoted a new, or even 2-3 year old car, the premium jumps another ~$1000-1500 per year.

Many people have the cheapest insurance they can buy, which means the minimum required coverage. That's not me.

We have had the same insurance carrier for decades. Supposedly we are getting huge discounts because our insurance is bundled.

That’s what I've been told for a long time, too. Ultimately it doesn't matter what they say, you should regularly compare it with other carriers. Prices change frequently.

I was prompted to make this change due to increases in my premium and my home policy being non-renewed, as my carrier is leaving California. So my agent bundled several of my policies with a new carrier.

That's a bummer with a silver lining I guess.

Insurance is another whole bowl of…………………..

We had a 22 Lexus RX450h and bought an additional vehicle that is a 25 Lexus RX350. The insurance is still more expensive for the 22 than the 25. According to our agent it’s just how they are rated! Same coverage with same deductibles. Just doesn’t make a lick of sense, even with my auto background! I say this because I know the 22 is worth at least $10K less than the 25.

A couple things have made me sticky to Geico - primarily the mechanical breakdown coverage on new cars, but also it's easy to deal with for me - too many others don't have functional websites and you end up chasing around agents that just add places to misunderstand and delay, not to mention take up the work day chasing them. No thank you, I have enough effort on that for other insurance that I can't get elsewhere. They're not the "cheap" option they used to be, but then again, I don't think any company is cheap for modern cars.

That's who I was with for the last 13 years. They've reduced services and have joined the race to the bottom. And now it's apparent, at least for me, that they are not even price competitive for a long time policyholder.

My issue is maybe I could shave $30 off a month, but then I lose the coverage on the newish car from 36k to 100k miles. Now, it's hard to directly compare, but other extended coverage last I looked was $2k+ up front and VERY mixed reviews of them actually covering anything. Vs $50 a year in premium to Geico, so not only does it cost way more, but it costs either more debt or lost savings returns as well. I have had Geico pay out on previous cars that had coils go out on it and another car that had a transmission sensor needed replaced, as well as on wheel bearings.

I was already paying about $12K for home, car (with 2 cars and 4 drivers (2 under 25) with Allstate. Meanwhile, my company took away the car (which they insured) they had provided me for years. SO I went a bought myself a car. I called the insurance and they told me it would be $3,500 extra per year for the additional car - insurance would now be over $15K.

So, I shopped around and called NJM - they ended up insuring the 3 cars and the home for around $6K. Literally the exact same terms.

However, my daughter had an accident, totaling one of our cars and the car she hit. Now my insurance is up to $11K. We have had 2 clean years with no claims whatsoever - hoping my premium will come down or we will shop around again.

We have enough to meet our umbrella policy coverage requirements and we live in New Hampshire. Progressive insurance.

If it was only $30 or $50, I probably would have stayed with Geico.

Yeah, that sucks. And it sucks that when you use the product you're paying for penalizes you for, you know, using it.

What is mechanical breakdown coverage? Towing?
I mentioned in a later post, but they cover things like coils and injectors failing, wheel bearings failing, transmission sensors, and really any mechanical thing breaking for the time you have the coverage from new to 7 years or 100k miles. There is a $250 deductible, and they pay the rest to the shop over the phone with a credit card.

The 22 is a hybrid.

I think all or nearly all insurance companies give bundling discounts. When I went insurance shopping around 18 months ago, I found the auto premiums to be nearly the same everywhere, but when I got a quote from a carrier that doesn't offer homeowners insurance in the "high risk" states (CA, hurricane/tornado country), it saved me a bunch on bundled policies. Enough to add an umbrella policy and still be under where I was previously.

I think I'm going to get hosed with our ongoing claim. I kind of think I would have been better off just fixing it myself.

So it is basically an extended car warranty bundled with and sold through your auto insurance company. I've never heard of it, but I am one that doesn't think extended car warranties are worth the cost.

Agreed but I understand why people who buy a Stellantis product buy extended warranties.

But the Turbos all require premium Gas.
No they don't. They require premium to get the PUBLISHED performance and mileage, by law. If you put regular fuel in a car that says it requires premium, the computer will automatically adjust the cylinder timing to match the octane of the fuel (knock sensor) and run happily along, albeit with a little less power and mileage.

I have a Genesis GV-70 with 6 cylinder twin turbo and only run regular gas:

The Genesis GV70 gas type recommended by the manufacturer is premium unleaded gasoline. Using premium fuel allows the GV70’s turbocharged engines to deliver their full potential, ensuring smooth acceleration and optimal fuel efficiency.

The label at the filler tube is a CYA to keep from being sued by a group of lawyers starting a class action claiming that the performance of the car does not match the manufacturer specs. It's like the medication commercials where they say: "Don't take [medication X] if you are allergic to its ingredients." Well duh!
