Song Of The Day.

I was in College in Washington State when this came out. Great band of the Pacific Northwest. Love still when I am 78.

I think I saw these guys at the Neptune decades ago. Fun times.

Jane Espie is a Scottish OR assistant with the British NHS. She is also an accomplished bagpipe player, known as the Phantom Piper. I love Highland Cathedral. I remember seeing this version 5 years ago and thought it was an amazing tribute to those in the front lines during the pandemic. It takes me back a bit to where we were five years ago and reminds me that even in tough times, we do eventually get through them. A good lesson for today, too.

Wow. That is amazing. I suspect he was playing a part written for a baritone horn (euphonium) or French horn. That is not a usual piece for a tuba, and with the bigger mouthpiece it is difficult to get the embouchure tight enough to play it so quickly while still blowing hard enough to power the tuba. Even on a trumpet it would require lots of experience.

At the recent Day Of Brass III event featuring the Cathedral Brass & the Cathedral Brass Youth Ensemble, that tuba same solo was performed, with brass ensemble accompaniment, by John Cradler, retired former Principal Tuba of the United States Marine Band (“The President’s Own”), who currently leads the tuba studio at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. During his time with “The President’s Own,” John performed for five U.S. Presidents, toured 48 of the 50 United States, and performed internationally in Japan, Singapore, and Switzerland. He is an accomplished music educator with an active studio for tuba and euphonium students in the Washington DC Metro Area. Not only that, he is the conductor of The Cathedral Brass Youth Ensemble. Rumanian Dance Number 2 was written by Dumitru Ionel. Born in 1915, Ionel was the principal tuba of the Romanian Army Orchestra. The Cathedral Brass version of the piece was arranged for brass by Dereck Scott.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're telling me that the piece was specifically written for tuba? If so, that's quite interesting!

I assumed the tuba-playing composer wrote it for solo tuba, but I did not research it to see if that might really be the case. All the live & recorded performances of it that I've heard are for tuba solo, but I've only heard a handful. I think it would work fine for euphonium. Maybe I'll click around U-Tube sometime & see what other versions might be out there.
