Beds have gotten complicated. Too many options and because of the number of options. Even Consumer Report ( yes I use and trust it) is not much help because of how many. As I get older, I have come to appreciate more a good nights sleep and how a bed contributes to it.

We have a split king (ie. 2 twin XL on same frame) Aireloom adjustable bed on each side. Not cheap. About $8500 with warranty all in with platform risers pre Covid. Prob $10k today. We have had it for several years and are happy.

I might still be too young to really notice, but I did have major back surgery as a teenager and am a little sensitive to beds. Like many things, I think there's extreme diminishing returns, especially at "traditional" mattress stores. From the research I've done online and my personal and family experience - I suggest if you're under 250lbs and can handle the heat of memory foam - buy a bed in a box memory foam online for 1/3 or less the cost of a upscale or major in person brand. I'd even avoid the "branded" casper / tuft and needle / etc and go for a decent rated Amazon special or Members Mark from Sam's Club. You don't need or want a box frame with these, so get or make a cheap platform.

If you're heavier I'd recommend a combo - either bought in one mattress or one you create yourself - with individual wrapped coils as a base and 2-3 inches of memory foam on top. Saatva makes an all in one at the higher end of what I'd want to pay, there are other options - just make sure the coils are individually wrapped. This made a huge difference 20 years ago for my back, and minimizes movement transfer as well I think. I've seen mixed info on these latest hybrid mattresses as to if you need a box spring or not, I've only used older style with a box spring so IDK how well it works skipping that.

The major benefit IMHO of the online sales is most of them give you at least a 30 day, some up to a year, return period if it doesn't feel great how you use it "in real life". I never find I can tell about a mattress in 10 minutes in a store, and it's not like even the first couple days at home really let me know. The major downside is that you need to be able to handle getting the old bedding out and new in yourself, with a friend, or pay extra for the service if it's even offered. That said, even if I couldn't or didn't have family or friends who could bang it out, I'd pay the couple hundred to a handyman for hire to pull it out and put it in for me, or the service because again, you get better trials, and the overall savings is huge. Well, and most mattress stores also charge a delivery and haul away fee now anyway so...

We bought our Sleep Science Ara split king at Costco, had it delivered. We like it a lot but staying at Westin and sleeping on the "Heavenly" bed, I would probably buy one for the discounted sale price they have sometimes.

The Purple mattress! 100 day return policy. They ship the mattress to anywhere you live. The level of firm and comfort is excellent. The mattress stays cool when you sleep on it.

I tried those at a store few weeks ago, liked the comfort I felt in the break from walking around the Mall of America.

FYI, I think most mattress stores do that as well. I know first hand that Matress Firm has a 60 day, no questions asked policy, and if they delivered it, they will also come and take it away for you.

We are on our 2nd tempurpedic. My spouse has significant back issues and it has been good for him. He always pays with pain when we are away from home.

Our 2nd TempurPedic just arrived in April. We went with the Hybrid from Costco. It sleeps cooler than our first one.

We have had memory foam mattresses for years now. Last one we purchased was a Serta IComfort. We like it a lot.

And I had spine surgery a year and a half ago so I’ve got a bad back as it is.

We have a Split King Cariloha. We have had it for a few years now and we love it. Best bead we have ever had and it was reasonable for a adjustable bed.🤙🏻

We have a Hastens. Phenomenal for us….

We have the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid king sized mattress on a platform bed - it's a hybrid mattress with individually wrapped coils and memory foam on top. It was a big improvement over our older memory foam only non-brand name king sized mattress that we bought from overstock.com many moons ago now - we still have the aging memory foam mattress in our spare bedroom. The hybrid mattress offers much better support for back pain than the memory foam mattress ever did.

I "made" my own mattress from high end foam (5.3lb memory foam for comfort layer) around 20 years ago. I've since added a latex topper to soften it up as we've gotten older. Still no sags or depressions. Original cost was approximately $400, iirc.

I have a Sleep Number which I hate TBH. Just doesn't feel luxurious to me.

In my guest room I have a traditional innerspring pillowtop mattress from IKEA and it's seriously the best mattress. Everyone who sleeps on it comments the next morning "wow that's a comfy bed".

I bought a Saatva expensive pillow for side and back sleepers. It's been a wonderful purchase and I think a Saatva mattress is going to be my next one. Ready to ditch the Sleep Number.

We have purchased a Charles Rodgers Powercore Estate bed - the 9000 to be specific (which is the plush mode - 5000 is firm, 700- is mid).

It is made in a factory in Northern NJ, all the materials are American made and sourced from nearby factories. If you go to their tiny showroom attached to the factory, you can tour the factory.

See them making the springs - with lower gauge, thicker steel than most manufacturers, Natural Talay Laytex and American made foams, rather than cheap Chinese foams in many other brands. Actual cottom and wool, etc....

It is not even that expensive as they sell direct. I think I paid around $2500 or $3000 for it back around 10 - 12 years ago. Still as good as when we bought it.

The only negative - it is HEAVY and Thick. Very difficult to move - even a few inches.- which makes it tough to change sheets.

Sleep Number. Adjust the firmness to whatever you want. King bed has two separate air mattresses, independently adjustable. This also reduces motion from one mattress to the other.

We bought a Sealy Posturepedic Plus last year due to my husband's back issues. We love it because it keeps us cool as we both are very hot sleepers and there is almost zero motion transfer so we don't wake each other up with moving around. I'm actually sitting in the bed right now because it is so comfy and supportive I enjoy sitting here to read and work. We spent a while laying in various ones at the stores before making this choice.

I bought one of these mattresses years ago and absolutely loved it. So when we downsized from King to Queen size I just bought another. Both have been excellent. I highly recommend and will probably keep buying these. Though, also, they last a very long time so I'm not sure I'll need to buy many more. My King size is still fine after 10 years, it just was too big. This mattress is great for my back, my allergies, and my ethics.

The Natural Bliss by Plush Beds - it's a latex mattress that's organic and the cover is organic cotton, no wool.
