We bought a Sealy Posturepedic Plus last year due to my husband's back issues. We love it because it keeps us cool as we both are very hot sleepers and there is almost zero motion transfer so we don't wake each other up with moving around. I'm actually sitting in the bed right now because it is so comfy and supportive I enjoy sitting here to read and work. We spent a while laying in various ones at the stores before making this choice.
This is the one I am leaning towards. Reasonably priced. Many different stores including Costco carry this bed. I called up Sealy and the said look for the Sealy Posturepedic Plus on the actually bed and ignore what the store calls it. Did you get the 14 inch or the 13.5 inch thickness. Also did you get the adjustable frame and lastly, where did you buy it?

I have a Sleep Number which I hate TBH. Just doesn't feel luxurious to me.

In my guest room I have a traditional innerspring pillowtop mattress from IKEA and it's seriously the best mattress. Everyone who sleeps on it comments the next morning "wow that's a comfy bed".

I bought a Saatva expensive pillow for side and back sleepers. It's been a wonderful purchase and I think a Saatva mattress is going to be my next one. Ready to ditch the Sleep Number.

We just add a 3-4" topper to the Sleep Number and get the best of both worlds.

We have purchased a Charles Rodgers Powercore Estate bed - the 9000 to be specific (which is the plush mode - 5000 is firm, 700- is mid).

It is made in a factory in Northern NJ, all the materials are American made and sourced from nearby factories. If you go to their tiny showroom attached to the factory, you can tour the factory.

See them making the springs - with lower gauge, thicker steel than most manufacturers, Natural Talay Laytex and American made foams, rather than cheap Chinese foams in many other brands. Actual cottom and wool, etc....

It is not even that expensive as they sell direct. I think I paid around $2500 or $3000 for it back around 10 - 12 years ago. Still as good as when we bought it.

The only negative - it is HEAVY and Thick. Very difficult to move - even a few inches.- which makes it tough to change sheets.

I also recommend Charles P. Rogers as the best mattress we’ve ever owned. We recently bought a 2nd one for our shore home in NJ after having used one at our home in North Jersey for almost 10 years.
This one is the Lifetime 8 King, with their foundations. Total cost was almost $4,000. It is well worth the price.

We used to have a Sleep number bed with the adjustable head and foot controls. We hated it and we got rid of it for the first Charles P. Rogers mattress.

Sleep Number. Adjust the firmness to whatever you want. King bed has two separate air mattresses, independently adjustable. This also reduces motion from one mattress to the other.

That is one with the removable topper and you flip the mattress? I do get a bit confused with their models (what is the difference between Powercore Estate vs Powercore SE?). There were not so many models when bought.

How do you like the Lifetime so far?

Joe, yes correct. The delivery guys set it up when it was delivered. I don't expect that we will flip and change the topper very often.
We LOVE the new bed. This bed replaced a 8 year old PC Richard or Mattress Firm "no brand name" King mattress and foundation. The difference is like night and day.

I did a lot of research before I built my mattress. It should be noted that a side sleeper will almost surely want something completely different than a back or belly sleeper. So the idea of a "best" mattress is somewhat nonsensical.
IMO, one should read up on the differences in the various foam types, their densities, ILD's, etc, and go from there. The markup on most decent foam based mattresses is insane and there's really no need to spend the amounts that are common for many name brand mattresses.

It's the 14 inch. We did not get an adjustable frame because I absolutely love our current bed frame. We could have bought it at Costco but we have access to the military exchange so we purchased through their furniture department for some extra savings.
Sorry for the delay in responding.

So, it is down to 3 Mattresses. Good Labor Day sales are influencing going a little higher in price. I will not buy a Mattress without testing it. It won’t ensure I like it once I own it, but it helps.
1- Purple Restore Plus, it is a hybrid bed. There is a store by me so I tried it. They offer an additional discount 10 percent discount first responders, military, teachers, college students and teachers. The 800 number of Purple price matches. I get a 20% discount at Mattress Firm on top of the sales price as an IBM retiree on the retiree website. Purple will match it and give their 10% discount.
2 - Kirkland Sterns and Forster. I called up the sleep expert on the Costco website which is the retail division of Sealy. They are very helpful. They gave me the model at Matress Firm that is the same model so we could try. This is the least cost choice of the 3.
3- Charles Roger’s. Liftetime 9 model. They have a store in NYC so it is worth the 50 minute drive. They have a really good sale and offering an additional 300 to 400 off. I never heard of them until my post. I like the adjustment you can make to the pillow top for firmness to each side of bed.

If I go with option 1, I will got with the king adjustable frame from Costco for $999. I was told by Costco (who also sells the Purple Plus bed) there are no issues). I might also do the same with option 2. With option 3, I will not.

I was not thinking of spending as much as I am for option 1 or 3. I am rationalizing it by thinking that if it makes a difference with the aches that come with aging and spread the cost difference over 5 years, a better nights sleep is worth it.

Patti bought a Sterns and Foster 24 years ago before we were together. About 13 years ago we added a 3 inch Topper from Costco. We both still find it very comfortable. We look forward to returning to our bed after a Timeshare stay. Our only issue is not the Matress but our Bed. We have a Sleigh Style. To tuck in the top sheet, blanket(s), and bed spread we have to lift the bottom corners of the mattress and topper. It is heavy. We flip the mattress a couple times per year.

I am going to the store in the city this weekend. They are having a great Labor Day sale. I actually put a deposit on it on line because they were giving an extra $100 per $1000 off. With all said and done it is 3199 plus tax. It is the lifetime 9. What do you have underneath the Mattress. I ordered their box spring but thinking of getting the adjustable Sleeper Science from Costco for 800. Rogers said it be fine and wouldn't impact warranty. They said they just sell a third party one anyway I would get theirs but it is only a split king.

Other Choice now is Purple Restore Plus. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

We have their thin boxsprings under the mattress. We purchased their leather wing bed and we needed the thin boxsprings so that it wouldn't be too tall.

Sleep number. We can pick our own degree of firmness and change it as we desire.

This is what we have. We are on our third. We did try a bed in a box a few years ago that we bought from Amazon. It was way to hard for my wife. I liked it but I like our Sleep Number better. We started long ago with a Select Comfort that we still have in one of the guest bedrooms. The family or friends that sleep on this bed always say how comfortable it is and some say they had vivid dreams.

We went into the city and tried the different beds. We decided on the Lifetime 9 with the "cassettes" that can be turned around to adjust for firmness. We added the low profile box springs but may cancel that and go with an adjustable bed frame. They just resale one so they said could go with anyone. You can tell it is well made. My concern is the weight. My wife read on the website that you should rotate the bed every month for the first year and 6 months after that. A 200 pound Mattress is heavy dead weight to turn around. I asked our sales person that we purchased from on the phone and she said every six months. The sales person in the store said you can just rotate the cassettes. Not true but not worth letting him know. That concern went away when I found out the weight of other high quality beds were in that range.

The price with removing old is 3500 plus tax. If I get 8 years out of it, it is 500 per year. The Purple Restore Plus was maybe 400 cheaper. I put 25% deposit to lock in a $100 per $1000 extra discount.

Last thing I am doing is trying the Beautyrest Black series 3 pillow top that also uses Latex. My friend has it and loves it. BTE, it weighs 206 for king.

Thanks for your input. Never heard of Rogers until this post and no other Mattress store I have been to in NY has either.

So, when I was bed shopping all those years ago. I read consumers reports, but read this one particular website - "The Old Bed Guy". This was a website by some man who was in the mattress industry all his life. He now has a facebook page - see link below. He has some PDFs like "mattresses buying 101'. Not sure how to find on facebook page, but you can probably send him a message and ask for the guides. I found him incredibly informative.

He felt that Beauty Rest Black was the best mainstream mattress back when I was looking. They were the new breed of 'Hybrid' mattresses - foams and coils - at the time.

We bought their foundation, the split king and it fit great on our existing bed frame. We LOVE our bed and feel the high cost is well worth the investment in great (and pain free) sleep. Good luck and let us know which you decide to go with.

I reached out to the "The Old Bed Guy" via email and FB chat. I have not heard back but I did read some of his information. Thank you for that suggestion. I did learn a lot and found a comment in one of my readings of him mentioning Rogers in a very positive way.

Good luck and let us know which you decide to go with.

I decided to go for the Rogers lifetime 9. The Beautyrest Black Series 3 with Pillow Top was a great bed also. My reasoning is since I am going direct to Rogers, the quality I am getting for virtually the same price will be much better. Also, consumer report gave Rogers a rating of 82 and said it was good for all sleepers. The second highest of all innerspring beds. Lastly and important my wife like a firm bed and I between medium and firm. With the cassette's in the rogers, each of of sides can be adjusted to what we like . I went with the adjustable frame from Mattress Firm, Checked with Rogers and they said any will work.

I have to be honest, I was not looking to spend so much for the Mattress but I looked at it his way. I spent more than the cost of what I spent taking my two son's, their wife's and my granddaughter to HHI this summer for vacation. My granddaughter aside, who can do no wrong, the other 4 have more to do with me not sleeping than anything. The bed will balance that out.

Thanks for all the input.

I hated our Sleep Number bed from the first night. Ended up with a foam topper on my side to make it comfortable, resulting in a lopsided bed because Cliff didn’t want one. We moved it to our mother-in-law unit after about five years and left it behind when we moved (good riddance!). Bought a Stearns & Foster in March 2021. Paid $3K for a bed that barely three years later has visible divots in it. I switched sides with Cliff temporarily last week while he deals with broken ribs (on my side he can roll out to the right and not onto his left side ribs). OMG it took one whole night for his divot to reshape itself to my body. Hoping tonight will be the last night sleeping on his side— cats will appreciate the switch back too!

Believe it or not, we just got the Rogers lifetime 9 a few days ago. It shipped back in September and we held it in the warehouse until we got our adjustable frame from Mattress Firm and a new platform that the bed and adjustable frame will fit within. My wife wanted a look that started at the floor to hide any legs of a frame. What started out as replacing a mattress turned into a lot more. I wanted the mattress replaced and it was the most expensive single item so yes dear became the phrase of the process.

When we asked for the bed to be sent to the house, we found out it was released for another customer instead of sitting in the warehouse. I understood so we had to wait for another one to be built and shipped from Florida to warehouse and warehouse to our house.
The 9 is in the middle of the softest firmness (10) and the most firmness (8). My wife and I both like it firm with my wife liking it more firm, but what I have come to learn in the 20 years since I last bought a mattress, there are so many technology's in mattresses now, the actual term firmness has no meaning. As mentioned in an earlier entry in this post, the 9 has what they call cassette that allows you to change each 1/2 of a king by unzippering the cassette and flipping the latex padding to soften the feel from the firmest feel. What I thought was a marketing ploy might have saved a return. We had it set up on the firmest for this mattress and after coming from a 20 year old bed that was the firmest offered 20 years ago, but a let less firm now, the new mattress was too firm. I flipped the cassette around and this adjustment in firmness was much better.

I believe at least some of my aches and pains were mattress related and the difference between sleeping and not is at times not mattress related but life related. Up until my post on this subject, I never heard of Charles Rogers. I would like to thank everyone for their input.
