For example, at sea level, the dewpoint for air at 100 °F and 10% relative humidity is 33 °F. And if the system is not condensing water, then the efficiency of the unit will be greater.

Yep. DW is now here full time. I will be splitting my time between WA (sharing an apartment with my son) and CA. We went to see the Big Boy Steam Engine in Roseville Ca ( near Sacramento) yesterday. We got up early and drove to get there at the 9am opening, it was about 110 when we left before noon. Not much shade in a railyard...

We had the carpets cleaned in January one year. You know when it’s a bitter cold 60 degrees in Southern California. Carpet cleaner wanted us to crank the A/C because carpet would dry faster. Cliff told me that was wrong, but I bundled up anyway and crawled in bed for the afternoon with the electric blanket because I figured the guy should know his business. Eventually we turned the heat on instead.

There are two things to consider. One is relative humidity, the familiar % that is reported. That a key driving force for evaporation. Because hot air can hold much more moisture than cold air, simply heating the air results in faster drying. At a typical 50% relative humidity for January in Los Angeles, at 60 °F that air would have 0.0055 lb water/lb of dry air. At saturation (100% humidity, where no further evaporation could occur), the air would hold

If we take that same air and simply heat it to 90 °F, the relative humidity drops to 18%. That increases the driving factor for evaporation. It also means that as air evaporates from the carpet, the humidity will stay lower, thus sustaining the driving force for evaporation.

The second factor to consider is the heat of vaporization required for water to change from liquid to gas. Warmer air contains more heat, which enables more water to evaporate. In other words, even if cool air and warm air have the same relative humidity (and thus the same driving force for evaporation), water will evaporate faster in the warm air than in the cool air.

Two weeks ago we were in Iceland freezing missing the warm. Now it’s been 115 every day for two weeks .

I remember the only time we were invited to visit my in laws after they moved to sun city arizona
it was118, and it was miserable.
we had cans of coke in the car and they exploded.
the in-laws refused to use the ac, and used a swamp cooler. She kept the house at 88 degrees
my kids were 7 and11 and only allowed to use the pools between 11 and one. I learned that you have to wear shoes to the edge of the pool or you will burn your feet.
My kids were both in the highest level of swim classes at the Y, but got whistled out of the pool constantly.
my mother in laws idea of a good time was to drive around and look at houses. we never found any activities to do.
we stayed four days and decided to move on, after we had packed up, the man next door came over and said the kids could use the pool.
we drove to Tucson to visit my aunt after four days. She worked, but had all kinds of activities lined up for us to do. And she turned the ac on.

We had cans of soda left in my car explode at Smugglers Notch when the temperature fell well below freezing. We had stalactites of frozen beverage hanging from the interior roof! What did the aftermath of your exploding cans look like?

We found pop cans with bulging tops in the back of the car in Phoenix after spending a couple hours at the Heard museum. Picked one up, luckily having stepped away from the open trunk, and it blew its top showering my arm with very warm diet Cherry Pepsi. We cranked the A/C and took the remaining cans inside to the timeshare kitchen having learned our lesson about carbonated beverages and hot cars. I believe I recall that we trashed the bulging cans and kept those that still looked normal.

That is why in Canada we call it pop. That's what the cans do when you leave them out in the cold!
Many years ago in the middle of winter a coworker stopped and bought two 12 packs of Coke on the way to work (we worked 2-10pm) while it was on sale. While outside for a break around 8pm another coworker said they heard a weird noise coming from Dave's car. At the end of the shift Dave opened his car to a almost totally brown interior with Coke all over the seats, windows and the roof liner. About 15 of the 24 cans had exploded all over the inside of the car! He had to take the car to a detailing place to get the frozen Coke thawed then cleaned up.

I snowmobiled every winter for about 35 years. It was fairly common to have frozen beers with bulging cans. They turn into Coors slushies, lol.

And just had really bad storm system go over with the worst parts miss us, but powers out again. When it finally calmed down enough to be safe to go outside I was able to cut over to the generator. Probably 6 or more hours till NYSEG fixes our power out here.
