Dave Ramsey Sued for $150 Million over promotion of Timeshare Exit Scam

posted that same thing earlier, but in an existing thread discussing the entire story!

Dave Ramsey is not just a celebrity endorser, he is a supposed expert and many people followed his advice to do business with a scammer exit company. If he is smart, and he claims to be, he will settle this case quickly.

I wouldn't expect that to happen, he probably has a lot of legal "outs" in situations like this. He is really just advertising a service. I do have a lot of problems how radio personalities and podcasters promote certain services. They always talk about how they use such service or product, which is pretty much impossible given all the things they hawk.

I just remember the clip of Ramsey on John Oliver's "take on timeshare" routine. He was just plain nasty and a braggert.

I was disappointed to see that TBN added his show to the lineup of shows. TBN allowed TET to advertise on their channel for a short time. I think it's disgusting to put a bad company like TET on a network to entice old people like me to pay a company like theirs.

You could very well be correct. However, being an arm chair lawyer with no legal training, I believe that Ramsey was acting as an expert endorser in sending his followers to the Timeshare Exit Team. I found this at the FTC website.

“(b) Although the expert may, in endorsing a product, take into account factors not within his or her expertise (e.g., matters of taste or price), the endorsement must be supported by an actual exercise of that expertise in evaluating product features or characteristics with respect to which he or she is expert and which are relevant to an ordinary consumer’s use of or experience with the product and are available to the ordinary consumer. This evaluation must have included an examination or testing of the product at least as extensive as someone with the same degree of expertise would normally need to conduct in order to support the conclusions presented in the endorsement.

Dave Ramsey himself said that he performed no due diligence on the Timeshare Exit Team and that may come back to haunt him.

yep, numerous instances where he makes claims to personally trust and or vetted this company...vs just reading an endorsement on air.

These timeshare exit companies are big time scammers. I know on the NC Outer Banks that they would tell people that summer weeks had no value and change them thousands to dump them, then turn around and sell them for thousands. They also charged people to take lesser value weeks where the HOAs would accept voluntary deedbacks, which they knew because they had done it before. The more that these con men can be put out of business, the better.

Shutting down the arrangement of legitimate "fronts" feeding unwary consumers into con shops and scammers will go a long way to put them out of business.

Making them pay will discourage these arrangements in the future.

I am willing to bet $20 that TugBrian has been approached to participate in these types of operations on a regular basis.

I am willing to bet far more that TugBrian has all ways and very clearly said NO. It is important to be able to trust the ethics of the people you associate with.

Any summer week on NC Outer Banks is liked finding gold. IMHO

Here is a legal viewpoint of the lawsuit:

I hope "Welsey Financial Group" goes bust, their ads always show up on my feeds...

It seems that this story has caused a spike in Google searches for "what happened to timeshare exit team". I noticed a big spike in views from a related video on my YouTube channel that I published over a year ago.

What state or federal agencies regulate timeshare exit companies?

I have yet to actually find a copy of the lawsuit nor do any of the articles even mention who the plaintiffs are or which law firm is representing them. All of the articles on the many different web and new sites all reference back to the original article by Religion News which doesn't even indicate that it has reached out to any involved parties for comment. It all seems kind of strange.

Does anyone have access to the PACER system linked in the Yahoo Finance article?

Yeah, I signed up for an account but it requires verification via USPS Mail to verify your account for search privileges (7-10 days). Still seems odd that no one actually posted a direct link to the lawsuit that they downloaded or viewed to write the article.

I watch EV battery news. The number of articles thar are rehashes of an original story is incredible. It seems to be the state of the internet and news at this point. Just rehash slightly and repost. No new information is ever provided.
Seems to be exactly the situation with the Dave Ramsey story.

How does an otherwise successful businessman pay TET $41,000 to get out of a Diamond Resorts contract! I wonder how deep he was into DR to think $41,000 would have been worth it.
