The United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel at land and ferry border crossings until Sept. 21.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says in a tweet the measures are being kept in effect to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including the Delta variant.

Oh, Canadians are so dangerous. Why does DHS not close the southern border?

Right wing media is scaring us again. Did that caravan finally arrive and America has been destroyed?

I seem to remember someone trying to do just that.

If you go by the left wing media there is absolutely nothing to see.

So the American way of life has been destroyed? You do realize that this trend of more crossings was well under way during the last administration and is always correlated with the economy. Seems we have done pretty well with our cheap food and landscaping. I thought this was about the Northern border. You do realize there are canadians illegally in this country too. Wonder why they are not perceived as dangerous and germ ridden.

Too many SILOS
- so when silos prevents effective management of an Issue - kick it out another month.
- because other people's families don't matter.

Monthly extensions - April 2020 - Sept 2021 / and counting.

As an immigrant (legal one BTW) to the United States, I am all for immigration and I resent anyone who crosses the border illegally or remains in the United States illegally. What percentage do you think Canadians make up of the overall illegal population in the United States? Less than 2% of the foreign born population of the US is Canadian.

Active cases as per https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#main_table
USA : ~7M or ~22k/1M
Mexico: ~420k or ~3k/1M
Canada: ~22k or ~600/1M

Even if all sick people of Canada cross the land border to USA, it will not make a big difference for USA.
So, saying they keep the land border close to minimize the spread of covid-19 in USA is very funny when there is way less cases in Canada, Canadian are more vaccinated and USA accept Canadian travelling to USA by air.

Why single out the southern border?

When it comes to people in the country without proper documentation, the majority of them didn't cross the Mexican border at all. Most of them came to the United States legally — but then don't leave.

I like the idea of open borders, open trade and open immigration. It would be an economic surge in countries like the USA and would uplift the economies of third world nations willing to abide in the open deal.

As far as it goes with the Northern Border being closed to protect the USA and Canada, it sounds right to me. I just don't get the logic of leaving the Southern Border open where most of the citizens are not vaccinated but I will gladly take trips to the Southern areas over the Northern areas in the winter. Canada is just too cold most of the year, imo.

And now from the network news that have 4x the viewership of fox. This seems to be important for some reason.

It is not migratory patterns that explain the recent outbreaks of Covid-19, but the low vaccination rates in certain states, Arthur Caplan, director of the division of medical ethics at New York University School of Medicine, told Noticias Telemundo.

"In some states, it isn't clear that there is very much migration right now at all, although there are big outbreaks," Caplan said. "As far as I know, the migration patterns in the past month are more north than south. That does not correlate at all."

The 10 states with the highest rates of Covid-19 infections in the past seven days are located in the South, including in Florida and Texas, where DeSantis and Abbott are preventing schools from mandating masks amid rising Covid-19 cases among children — though some schools and districts are defying the governors and requiring masks.

So tell me, should we play dueling websites or perhaps, let the masses decide what to believe? I assure you I can match you site for site, for as long as is desired.

Too many SILOS - IMO when your bureaucratic incompetance prevents you from managing an Issue- kick it out another month.

USA Northern Land border closed to non essential travel April 2020 - Sept 2021 / and counting.

How about remembering the folks who have family members on the other side
and would like to drive across the border to visit them.

Or perhaps we could provide balanced articles that realize you cannot pull out one factor, no matter what it is, and say that is the problem. Subtlety seems to be lost here. But then agenda's would have to be ignored and we would have to stop hijacking every thread with them. BTW my agenda is to get people vaxxed and use proven mitigation to save lives....even if they are not my own.

Well, seems I could sling that nonsense around and throw it right back but, I'll save that. So, gather your minions and announce you're saving the planet. I'll wait patiently while you do. I understand your "agenda". You do understand that this "agenda" of yours includes thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the southern boarder, day in and day out, with any number bringing more Covid into the country? Of course you do.

Hey - @WVBaker ,@bluehende

This thread is about legal residents or citizens of Canada NOT being able to legally enter the USA at a land border for non essential travel.

For the purposes of this specific post - I will only mention visiting family .

I am a duel citizen - born in Queens NY . My wife is a Canadian citizen. My 91 year old father lives in New York State.
Under the current USA border rules we cannot drive together across the border to go see him.

WHY ?

WHY ?
If you were living in USA and you visited your wife's family in Canada with your wife, what would happen to your wife when you would return home in USA ?
Would your wife be allowed to return home in USA via land border or going home is considered non essential travel and she would need to return home by air only ?

We did live in St Louis MO after getting married from 1978 - 1990. She had a green card during that period and so had legal residence.

So if we were to reestablish residence in the USA. she would again apply for a green card./ and in the current border closure rules could enter the USA by land.

Cost of health insurance would be a complicating budget factor in USA residence for both of us.

I've googled and no meaningful answers. What is SILOS?

The southern border with Mexico IS CLOSED for non essential travel by DHS and it was just extended to Sept 21 just like the northern border with Canada.
<people entering under refugee status is a different category >

Let's use El Paso TX/ Juarez MX and Niagara Falls- Buffalo NY/ Niagara Falls St Catherines ON

Both have a significant population that has family on the other side of the river .
One specific reason that added to cross border families is the cross border drinking age variations.

People crossed the border to go a bar / meet someone and get married. They will inevitably have grandparents , parents , cousins etc on the other side of the river.
Under the current USA border rules it is very likely that family visits have been impacted.
********
FYI - in the Greater Niagara Area - the "best bars" / which country location for 18 year olds has changed twice . At one time New York State was 18 and Ontario was 21. Then Ontario lowered it and NYS raised it*. Drinking age in Mexicois 18 - Drinking age in all US states is 21.

*[this was all long before online dating apps.]

thanks for asking

In a non farming -business bureaucracy sense - it means that you have knowledgeable people who only view a big picture from the narrow view of their own expertise.

An example is the health experts who implemented school shutdowns due to their expertise on the viral spread of Covid / while having no understanding or interest in the mental health issues that would result. < so the result is more school age suicide deaths than Covid deaths in that cohort of the population> (ie) SILO thinking.

A business example would be a company that is introducing a new product to their existing customer base - with a goal of a 15 % revenue growth.
1 )Marketing is promoting the product.
2 ) Sales is actively presenting the product and writing orders
3) Credit is not adjusting any customers terms or credit limits.
4) Logistics has not yet expanded warehouse capacity due to their budget

Each group has expertise - but is only operating within their own SILO and this is compromising the big picture of 15 % revenue growth
