School closings

So who is going to take care of all these kids? Who is going to provide free Breakfasts and Lunches for the kids that qualify? Who is going to pay the parents that have to stay home?

All schools in Virginia will be closed from K to 12 starting Monday for two (2) weeks.; By Executive Order by the Governor of Virginia.

Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church schools are closed through April 13. I just ordered a bunch of school supplies to keep the kids busy for a month at home!

So who is going to take care of all these kids? Who is going to provide free Breakfasts and Lunches for the kids that qualify? Who is going to pay the parents that have to stay home?
Good point. This can create havoc for parents. What about making up time lost? :ponder:

While not meaning to suggest these questions are unimportant, all of them are less important than the health and safety of these kids.
When official after official trumpets the idea of social distancing but then refuses to close schools, their message is a conflicting one.
Many businesses are actively allowing those who can to work from home, but we all know that is a small percentage of our workforce. I agree this is not an easy situation to navigate but health and safety concerns are the most important.

Actually all the statistics are demonstrating that the kids are the least affected.

Or, are kids among the least tested group?

Maybe, but they are carriers. A kid was infected from NBA player autographed something. Gonna send kid to see grandpa this weekend? I don't think so.

If a parent needs to work and a grandparent can watch kids, you can't have those kids be carriers or they are a risk to grandparents.

I've listened to a few governors and mayors as to how they are deciding things, and I leave it to them to determine best for their residents. Cuomo has a lot of moving parts there and his concern was keeping healthcare workers with kids working, so not all schools there are closed. He can't shut down mass transit or nobody can work. So working parents with kids were a high priority for him, right after medical services and personnel.

I am not sure we can safely say kids won't be gravely affected. There is too much we don't know, this is all going very fast, it's not going to be perfect.

least likely to have been at a business conference or travel internationally, maybe they just aren't catching it but catching regular flu.

this is being addressed. check with your local authorities.

The school district I worked for was holding out as long as possible because of concerns of feeding the students, and parents who need child care. They finally announced we will be closed next week because of a case in the surrounding community.
They have made provisions to provide breakfasts and lunches to those who need it.

My fear is that people who do not get paid for taking time off (part time workers, service industry, etc) will go to work sick and infect. And fears of that will drive people away from restaurants, fast food places, mom-and-pop shops, etc.

In Arkansas (outside of the 4 county area that was closed) that was and continues to be the rationale for NOT closing the schools. It is a solvable problem - but not an easy one I admit. Still, in order to achieve social distancing, this has to include school closings.

I was talking to a Sam's employee earlier today and she noted she hoped schools would NOT close because a bunch of kids would end up in Sam's for a variety of reasons (boredom, lack of other care options, etc) that would not be conducive to helping achieve social distancing. She noted that when schools have closed before for sickness related reasons, the number of kids in Sam's that day is sure to rise sharply. I understand her point and wish all parents could stay home with their kids during times like these.

Still, achieving a goal of keeping more kids away from others makes sense but it won't be perfectly executed.

Not sure which mayor, but said he was keeping schools open because there would definitely be unsupervised children and he did not want to risk that.

I feel the above mayor maybe have some major concerns because what are these unsupervised teenagers/students coming to do for two weeks; without any organize recreation programs provide by the state or city.

yep, he smelled trouble.

Governor of NC just closed all Public School Systems for 2 weeks.

Well, we just got notice that we will be closed all next week.
We had a mild winter so we will use our unused snow days.

FL public schools closed for two weeks. Are schools in your area / state closed?
They are keeping nyc schools open. I just don’t know anymore. I understand they are keeping them open for kids to eat but what do they do when it’s summer break? I just don’t get it

The governor of Ohio just said it is not likely that schools in his state will open again this year.

Kids need school to eat?

Yes, many poor kids get their best, most healthy meals at school through breakfast and lunch programs. Things in many cases have changed for the better. Our country realized these kids existed and we, collectively, took responsibility to do what we can to help them and their parents.

This YEAR. I am trying to wrap my head around that. wow...

If you have more details, please post. States are handling things in different ways.

I thought students were going to school to be taught & learn math, engish , science and history. Things really have change in the last sixty (60) years.
Yes, a significant number of factors has changed in 60 years. Stay at home mom is a fixture of history, can't float a family on one wage. Single parent households and deadbeat dads weren't prevalent 60 years ago. Not sure there were "food deserts" back then, but there are now.

Food should not be assumed to be a given in each household, nor should it be assumed that every kid has an actual household. There are a lot more working poor than there used to be, most big cities do have a big population of hungry kids, and homeless. Locally, our pantries and shelters issue pleas for help in the worst of times, while "plant a row for the hungry" has been in place for a long time. I take my excess produce in to help others.

I assume he meant this school year and not calendar year.
