Heard so much about these burgers..When are they coming to east coast? Gettin hungry....

Five Guys has several PA locations--isn't there one near you?

Way better than In-N-Out Burger, in my opinion.

Five Guys any day

I would take a burger and frys from Five Guys over In and Out any day but I guess it is because I'm from Northern California where our tastes must be better then Southern California.

Nothing against In-N-Out, but since they aren't here and Five Guys is, it's a no brainer. Actually, if I never had another 'fast food' burger, even if it's fresh ground with fresh cut spuds yada, yada, yada, I've had my share. Since Five Guys came to town I ate there once just to see what the hype was about. No hurry to go back.

I've had both and IMHO overall their comparable. Which a person prefers is a matter of personal choice.

I think that In-N-Out does a better job on the burger itself, and I also give them an edge on the fries, though that is closer. Where they differ is with the add-ons and the ability to customize the burger. If I want just a straight burger and fries, In-N-Out is my choice. If I want to load up the burger, then Five Guys gets the nod.

Both In-N-Out and Five Guys lag pretty far behind The Counter, though. Especially when it comes to customizing.

Five Guys Is America's Favorite Burger, Says Recent Market Force Survey

"Yet another survey has declared Five Guys America's favorite burger joint, beating out In-N-Out, Fuddruckers, A&W and Smashburger, in that order. McDonald's and Burger King appeared even lower on the list. The survey, from Market Force Information, questioned 7,600 consumers and first simply calculated the number of votes for each chain. Then, Market Force factored in the number of locations. The results were also examined geographically."

It's almost blasphemy to say it (as a Southern Californian) but I prefer Five Guys over In-N-Out!!!!:eek::eek:

According to the article posted in post #4, In-N-Out doesn't plan to expand quickly. All locations are company owned (not franchises). They also don't build new locations more than a days drive from their distribution centers. So expecting expansion on the east coast is a pipe dream IMO.

You are a blasphemer!

There is a similar joint right near Fenway Park that my son and I found called Tasty Burger and it was awesome. As good as any of these famous chains.

I love burgers, but not 5 Guys. To me, they are a fast food burger at a sit down restaurant price. I'd much rather spend the same amount of money on a higher quality burger.

I've only been to In-n-Out once, in Phoenix, and liked it. My daughter, 9 at the time, asked dubiously, "I don't think a place called In-n-Out Burger sounds very appetizing. Do you really think we should stop here?" I think I laughed for 15 minutes straight! :hysterical:

I've heard people rave about Five Guys for years but I'd never been to one. Then one opened in my little town, only a couple of miles away. I thought the burger was okay but not great, and not worth what they charge for it.

People were also raving about the fries, but the only exceptional thing I found about them was the quantity -- two orders was far too much for two people; ONE order was probably too much for two people. The fries down the street at the el cheapo Rally's/Checkers are much better, imho.

I don't expect I'll be back any time soon.

I've lived my whole life east of the Mississippi, so I don't know about In-And-Out.

Nothing wrong with Five Guys, but nothing special. We could walk to the one near us if the weather was nice but we hardly ever go there. Much prefer Red Robin (although much higher prices)

We love In-and-Out. Much better burger and I prefer the fries. My wife prefers the burgers at Five Guys, but likes both. My daughter is 100% In-and-Out. Wish they did have I&O here in the east. Closest they get is Texas.

We have 2 In and Outs by our house. We like their burgers the best of the fast food burgers. I think their frys are like cardboard by DH and DS like them.

DH and I just went to Phoenix and they had a 5 Guys. We heard so much about them and so we thought we would try them while we were there. We were completely underwhelmed. The burger was too mushy for me and I prefer the buns and In and Out. We would never go back to 5 Guys.

But then, to start a war, we don't like Bubbas on Kauai either.

I like In-and-Out and Five Guys, but I'm just as pleased with Wendy's.

There are many, many individual burger shops and very small chains that run circles around any large chain. If a person lives in a city of any reasonable size and doesn't know of one, that person hasn't been looking. When you're dealing at that level it's a lot easier to consistently source higher quality ingredients and control the overall operation.

Have you tried the crispy fries at In-N-Out? It's an off menu item - you have to ask for them. Same price.

I mentioned The Counter upthread. Han anyone else here tried them? When they had a shop in Seattle they used to offer bison burgers. Very tasty. Also much more lean, so not as messy.

Not a pipe dream, but probably some years away until they develop more distribution centers.

Also influenced by corporate finance limitations resulting from being privately held and not franchising. Since they don't franchise, much greater working capital is required for expansion. And since they are privately held they aren't generating capital from stock sales.

What that means in practice is that probably will not build another distribution center until their existing distribution centers are maxed out and it doesn't make economic sense to to enlarge or expand existing distribution centers (either because they have reached a point where additional expansions to existing centers require significant capital or the market served by the distribution center is saturated).

That is the point at which they would consider adding another distribution center.

So they will continue to expand in areas surrounding their existing distribution centers before they build another one. Makes sense. The amount of capital that they would need for expansion is huge. So I think it is still a pipe dream to expect them on the east coast, even within the current decade or half century. How far have they gotten in their 65 years? Five states none farther east than Texas. McDonald's is only a few years older and look at their reach. In-N-Out is yet to get to the Mississippi.

In n Out from the secret custom menu, mustard fried MFR.

and a shout out for number 3 Fuddruckers if you want to try exotic burgers like ostrich and wild boar...

I miss In N Out! They were my favorite "cheat" burger when I lived in So Cal. Here in FL we have 5 Guys but...eh...not as good.

These pictures are an extreme, but man they made my mouth water!!!!

The pace of expansion, though gradual, has accelerated in the last 10 years. Couple that with an heiress who will have full ownership in five years (if she does not mysteriously die), and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Also, if the chain so chooses, their is debt financing available to fund expansion.

We fell in love with In and Out when we were out west. I went to Five Guys one time, had left over fries, took them home in paper bag and declared that I would not eat another fast food fry. Just thinking about that greasy bag makes me ill. If we need food on the road, we normally get a Subway sandwich with lots of veggies.
